Deftones’ Jumpy Trip With The Engine No.9 In Bandung

Several days ago, Deftones posted a picture of a mural. Not just an ordinary mural, it’s a special one, which was made as a tribute to late Deftones’s bassist, Chi Cheng. Guess where the location of the mural is? Yes, it is in Bandung, Indonesia. For the record, the distance between Deftones’s home soil, the United States of America, and Indonesia is about 9000 miles. So that’s the reason why Deftones’ name was super-famous in Indonesia and they have influenced some of Indonesia’s most notable bands like Burgerkill. By the time when Nada Promotama announced that Deftones would visit Indonesia (this time, it’d be in Bandung) for the second time, the responses from their fans were jubilant.

Chino Moreno, Abe Cunningham, Stephen Carpenter, Sergio Vega and Frank Delgado went on stage at 7.45 PM with ‘Diamond Eyes’ and ‘Rocket Skates’, both of them are a single from their 2010 album, Diamond Eyes. Followed by a track from their classic, Around The Fur, ‘Be Quiet and Drive’. Chino Moreno wore a Joy Division t-shirt and pumped the crowd with his moves and high notes. ‘My Own Summer (Shove It)’, ‘Lhabia’, and ‘Knife Prty’ followed afterwards. Right in the middle of the set, Stephen’s guitar faced some technical difficulties, and then Chino started to rap along during the set. After some difficulties, they finally made it. They played ‘Digital Bath’ and ‘Elite’ before playing ‘Change’ as a tribute to the late Chi Cheng. They played ‘Bloody Cape’ before the encore break. Right after the encore call, they performed ‘Bored’. Followed by ‘Root’ and a special version mash-up of ‘Engine No. 9’ with Kris Kross’ ‘Jump’. They played 7 Swords as their last song.

Despite some of the technical difficulties, the smile on Chino Moreno’s price was priceless when he saw some tribute from the crowd to Deftones’ late bassist, Chi Cheng. And yes, he mentioned the mural that he saw a day before the gig.

1.Even though this was Deftones’s second gig in Indonesia, this gig was special because this one wil be held after the passing of their Iconic Bassist, Chi Cheng. Chi Cheng was an iconic person who inspired most of the people in the rock scene. Even some of Bandung’s street artist has created a mural with Chi Cheng’s face on it. Deftones and Chino Moreno is an iconic band who inspired a lot of people around the world. You’ll be gutted if you miss them.

2.Their brand new album, “Koi No Yokan” has received mixed reviews around the world. With a majority of good props from major rock media, such as Revolver Magazine who gave this album an award for album of the year. “Koi No Yokan”’s single, “Swerve City” topped some of the rock around the world.

3.Chino Moreno said that after Chi’s death, he had an intention to release their unfinished album with Chi, “Eros”. So they could play some materials from their unfinished album live! Who knows about that? Chino is an unpredictable guy and he loves to bring much surprise to his fan. Such as covering The Smiths and Duran Duran, who plays a pretty different music compared to Deftones.

4.Bandung is known for their underground movement. Watching an iconic band with fellow gig-goer is a blissful joy. Singing to Minerva with a fellow gig-goer must be a joyful experience.

5.The ticket price is cheap! For comparison, the ticket price for Deftones’s previous gig in Indonesia was around IDR 450-550k. And now it’s only 350k. It’s pretty cheap, right?

6.The late Deftones’ bassist, Chi Cheng, has a song with his own name. That is ‘Chi’ from KoRN.

7.Did you know that ‘Around the Fur’ video has never been released until today? Yes, the video which was directed by Stef Carpenter back in 1998, contained nudity and drug scenes.

8.Still from ‘Around the Fur’. Its album cover features a woman whom people thought she was a Celeste, Chino’s wife. But, it’s wrong. The truth is the girl who featured on the cover is Lisa, a freelance model.

9.Before Chi Cheng jumped the band as the bass player, there was another man who filled the slot. The first bass player was Dominic Garcia (Dom). Dom was a friend of Abe.

10.This is Deftones. The band who created some of major hits such as Engine No. 9, Minerva, Be Quiet and Drive, Rocket Skates and many more. Skipping their gig would be a major disappointment for you. So what are you waiting for, secure your ticket now!

Deftones’ gig in Jakarta, 2 years ago was a memorable night for those who grew up in late 90s/early 00s. But for those who’ve missed the gig, there’s no need to regret because a second chance is coming at you. Thanks to Nada Promotama, Deftones is scheduled to play Bandung, Indonesia on May 30th, 2013. Even though Deftones is still mourning a tragic loss of their iconic bassist, Chi Cheng, 2 weeks ago, the promoter has confirmed that their show is still going as scheduled. Deftones’ current line-up consists of Chino Moreno, Sergio Vega, Stephen Carpenter, Frank Delgado, and Abe Cunningham and they have just released their brand new album, “Koi No Yokan” in late 2012. Be sure to catch them on May 30th, 2013 at The Venue Concert Hall, Eldorado Bandung.
