After successfully held the first edition of Japanese Whisper in September 2011, Common People Yogyakarta did the same thing to their second edition of Japanese Whisper last Saturday (23/03) at Langgeng Art Foundation, an art gallery located in Jl. Suryodiningratan. There were three bands lined up as performers that night: Dojihatori (Yogyakarta), The Aftermiles (Jakarta), and Mitsume (Japan).

On 7.45 pm, Dojihatori began to warm up the stage. It’s been almost 5 years since the britpop band had their last gig, and we are curious to see their comeback. Lazy Bike, This Soul, Brainwashed, In The Stars, and some other songs were there to fulfil our longingness. Dojihatori ended their perfomance with Hero for Myself.

After Dojihatori then followed by The Aftermiles who was not in a full team position. Due to the absences of Ringgo Agus as their new vocalist, The Aftermiles ran their show with Eddie (guitarist) who put up for the vocal part. In a setlist of four songs, they got the crowd singing along to their latest single, What You Say You Want.

Mitsume was the most awaited headliner for Japanese Whisper #2. Coming all the way from The Land of The Rising Sun, this indiepop band was really excited to perform outside Japan. They even manage to amuse the audience as they have learned some Indonesian phrases such as “Kami suka mie goreng” and “Kami masih jomblo”. After the intro of Cider Cider, they went on with six other songs including Disco, Entotsu, and one untitled new song. The crowd chanted for encore, so Sankaku and Kurage served as the climax of the show. (Ray Wardhana)

We are so thrilled to know that Yogyakarta’s fellas have returned with their biennial event, Japanese Whispers #2! The second installment of Japanese Whispers will be bringing more fun and more acts in a wider range to Yogyakarta.

Japanese Whispers #2 is organized by Yogyakarta collective Common People, is held on 23 March 2013 at Langgeng Art Foundation, Yogyakarta, featuring The Aftermiles (Jakarta), Dojihatori (Yogyakarta) and Mitsume (Tokyo) on the lineup.

For those of you who get the question mark popped in your mind about this event, we will tell how it went. The event originated from an episode on Japanese shoegaze (“J-Shoegaze”) in Outerbeat, a weekly radio show run by Common People, back in 2010. Among the listeners were members of J-shoegaze band Texas Pandaa, who then expressed interest in coming to Indonesia. In September 2011, they eventually played two shows in Bandung and Yogyakarta. The latter, named after The Cure’s 1983 single, saw them sharing the bill with local dream-poppers Paraparanoid and Jakarta shoegazers Mellon Yellow.
The following year, Texas Pandaa helped Yogyakarta twee pop outfit Brilliant at Breakfast organize their Tokyo mini-tour in October 2012. One of the bands they shared stage with was Mitsume, a group of youths who play sophisticated indie pop with influence ranging from jangly to electronica. The band, who have released three albums, said during an aftershow chat that they, too, found the Indonesian music scenes interesting and would be thrilled to play here – which is finally realized this year. And for the local acts, The Aftermiles and Dojihatori will be summing up the phrase “the more the merrier” for Japanaese Whispers #2.
Ps: Limited pre-sale tickets are available through Swaragama FM Yogyakarta from 11 to 18 March 2013. Send an email to commonpeopleyk@gmail.com to book from outside Yogyakarta.

Dojihatori is an Indonesian indie britpop band from Yogyakarta. After won the LA Light indie festival and released two albums, Dojihatori seems to set a great start, and should be heading toward their next successful album. But after two years, there’s no news on their upcoming new album. Why is that?I myself managed to interview Dojihatori’s guitarist and frontman, Windho. So let’s hear about the band’s hiatus and their plan to release a new album soon.Tell us about Dojihatori’s hiatus? And when you guys are planning to make a comeback?
Well Dojihatori is indeed on a break, we’re relaxing to be exact. It’s different back then when was in college, we used to be a “hard-working” band. It’s a different era, so we’re kind of have different goals. We used to make new materials and keep practicing, and we often perform on stage, even though there were just one or two people that come to our show. As a new band, we want to achieve many things at that time, wrote songs, played it on stage, released an album, and performed at any events and shows. We’ve been through that phase since 2000, and many things have changed since then. Our band members are now busy with work. And of course the distance, we don’t stay at the same city like we used to. So this is what we called “relaxing”, even though we still try to be productive. Several person of our band member is now married and has a family, so we must settle a priority and, in this matter, Dojihatori has to step down.

Do you guys have any plan to release a new album?
We planned to release a new album sometime in last year, but we have to pending the production process because of the marriage of our vocalist, so it’s kind of affecting the recording process. So our new plan is to finish the recording this year and release the new album next year.

Is there any difference between the new upcoming album and the last two albums?
On our previous albums, most of the songs were written by me and Rinto (our bassist), and Rinto took a bigger role on dealing with our song lyrics. But, on our new album, Yuma (our vocalist) and Feri (our drummer) are keen to put some of their ideas to the songs, so it will be different in term of the album’s taste and sound of the songs. On our previous albums, we put lots of distortion to the sound of our guitar. But on our new album, we try to sound more “vintage”. We try to explore different path but we still want to keep our “old” taste from the previous albums.

In your opinion, what’s the best album of 2011 so far?
I’m afraid we have to pass this question, we’re still busy listening to The Beatles, hahaha.

Is there any peculiar band that you guys wanna share a stage with?
The Who, The Jam, Stone Roses, The Kooks, we think they’re talented.

(Natalia)
