Our discovery of Sunless ’97 was started when we surf out about Patrick Wolf, then he recommended NME Magazine to listen to Sunless ’97. We know when it comes to Mr.Wolf’s cup of tea, the music won’t be the same, it’ll be out of the box and a bit eclectic. So we headed to find more about Sunless ’97 and boom, the flowery synth went into our ears smoothly.

Sunless ’97 are an electronic band from London consisting of Alice Davies, Matthew McGough, and Edward Leeson. You might feel familiar with one of these names, Edward was a lead singer of Larrikin Love, the London-based rock band. Sunless ’97 were formed in 2011, but long before the band were born, Alice and Matthew has been working together for some project. Alice was in charge for the visual’s aspect and Edward drove the music part, later on, through some mutual friends, they met Matthew. The name of Sunless ’97 was inspired by Chris Marker movie and ’97 meant as Heaven’s Gate, the religious cult that had a mass suicide in 1997.

The band launched their first EP, ‘Making Waves’, in 2011. The EP itself was produced with a helping hand of Kwes. Kwes is part of the growing scene of south London’s electronic music, such as the XX and Micachu. We love Kwes and his music. His approach to making music is very intuitive and inspiring . “I wouldnt say his end result sounds similar to our end result but we learnt a lot from him working on our first EP. And I guess we both make obscured pop songs.” said Alice on Kwes’ contribution. And in 2013, they released ‘Aurora I/Aurora II’.

If you’re into youthful music, or some people say it as a ‘how a hipster will listen’ person, Sunless ’97 would be a perfect choice. With an upbeat tempo and some electronic dip, Sunless ‘97’s music is pretty light to everyone’s ears. The achingly cool taste on their music just will suit you. No matter you’ll place their music at, Sunless ’97 will adjust.
