This all-girl band has been featured on many kind of list that tends to words “best new band”, The South-London girls prove it all. Savages, they totally have ripped your ear drums by the first time you listen to their music. Their post-punk tunes will bring you back to the genuine 1979 when everyone hailed it. Savages consist of Jehnny Beth (vocals), Gemma Thompson (guitar), Ayse Hassan (bass), and Fay Milton (drums). Being the all-girl band was actually not the first idea of the girls when they were about to form it. Jehnny was a former member of lo-fi rock duo, John et Jehn. Later, Gemma (happened to collaborate with Jehnny for their previous project) and Ayse were like a close friend to Jehnny decided to form a band, and Fay came up as the wrap-up. Savages’ momentum was when they were hand picked by Scott Wilkinson to be the opening act of British Sea Power. It started when Scott contacted the band and asked them out whether they wanted to fill the slot for British Sea Power’s gig in Brighton. By that time, the band were such in a flash organizing. Became the supporting act for BSP was actually their first ever gig as Savages, and it rocketed their name.

When Jehnny was asked on her position as a front woman, it’s actually something that she was shy to admit. “I was too shy to begin with, I didn’t want people seeing me sing the words ‘hit me’ – but I’d always dreamed about it. My musical education was listening to Iggy Pop, Bowie, Lou Reed. I remember at some point simply knowing that I wanted to front it. I was reading lots of poetry when I wrote our lyrics – lots of English shorts about the French Resistance and war; something fragile and precious being assaulted by an evil force” said Jehnny to Wonderland Magazine. The band are hoping that their music is reflecting the pure ideas of what the lyrics speak to. It’s pretty much that Black Sabbath (which is what the band been listening to) made them want to create something vigorous and striking.

Without a doubt that people have fallen in love in Savages’ music. They have been likened as the female version of Joy Division and also Siouxsie and The Banshees. Their song “Husbands” has built the stronger sight to people in seeing the band. Guardian wrote “Husbands, the B-side of the first single by Savages, makes us dream of what it must have been like to have been around to hear, in real time, the debut releases by Public Image Ltd, Magazine, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Joy Division, to feel, as those incredible records hit the shops, that unearthly power and sense of a transmission from a satellite reality.“. And if you listen to their “Flying To Berlin” you can feel a huge switchback to Joy Division’s bassline in “Colony”.

On Savages as the all-girl band, they actually feel this is such an interesting feature. The band were actually certain that press will be addressing them a “You are a girl band….” questions, but thankfully it has never been such a big deal. Savages want to show their personality, their music, and it doesnt matter with the kind of music that they are expressing in a fact that they are girls.

Eventhough they are being praised a lot lately and got nominated for BBC Sound Of 2013, the band still think they have a ton of things to prove. Savages bring back middle-aged music fan to their youthfull years, drag the nostalgic sound to the 2000s era, and they are totally breaking the stigma of the all-girl band.
