GO LIVE! and Stellar Events proudly confirmed the award winning post-punk revival band from Scotland, Franz Ferdinand, whose Indonesia Tour 2018 will take place in Jakarta on Friday November 30th, 2018 at Tennis Outdoor, GBK Senayan and in Bali on Sunday December 2nd, 2018 at Potato Head Beach Club following their latest album world tour that has been starting in the beginning of the year.

This sensational multi-million selling rock band with spikes and jump-around adrenaline always succeed to make the crowd full of energy and feel fantastic. After their first concert on November 14th, 2009 concert in Jakarta, the band comes back to Indonesia to promote their 2018 album, Always Ascending.

Franz Ferdinand has chosen to rock in the two biggest cities to celebrate their music artistry with the utmost indie-rock fans in Indonesia. Franz Ferdinand live in Jakarta will also enlivened by Jakarta-based bands Fourtwnty, Elephant Kind and BaraSuara. while Sunset People Project (Ridwan G, Shawn & Heru), Felix Dickinson, Sunmantra and Seabass also will feature in their concert in Bali.

The Best British Group proclaimed by Brit Awards, also went on to earn Grammy nominations for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Best Alternative Album & Best Rock Performance and won many awards from many countries, has been garnering multiple UK top-10 hits. The band that first formed in 2002, has been released 5 studio albums and 1 collaborative album with American Rock Band, Sparks.

“It has been a fair few years since most indie-rock punters have eagerly anticipated the new Franz Ferdinand album. They’ve always been an impressive live band, deliver a massive memorable wowing from crowd, and they plan to have a vigorous showcase of their 2018 album in front of their adoring faithful”, said Reza Prawiro as The Director of Stellar events.

More on the opening performers lineup in Jakarta which are Elephant Kind, Fourtwnty and BaraSuara, these artists will definitely bring more color to the Franz Ferdinand’s concert in Jakarta. Jakarta Beat named Elephant Kind as the Best New Artist of 2015 after the release of their second EP Promenades: A Short Film by Elephant Kind in 2015. The two-time AMI nominee was also nominated as best new artist by Indonesia’s.

The recent most talk-about indie band - Fourtwnty - that has already making music together since 2010 and the band became more famous for their music being included as one of the Filosofi Kopi’s movie soundtracks in 2017 with a song called Zona Nyaman. Just try listening to ‘Fana Merah Jambu’, ‘Puisi Alam’, ‘Diskusi Senja’, you will be brought into the imaginative dimension and leave the tiredness for a moment, on their following show in Jakarta on Nov 30th they have promised, will have different concepts show.

Lastly, the opening performer of Franz Ferdinand’s concert in Jakarta is BaraSuara which really doesn’t need introduction anymore. The band first gained prominence in 2015 with its single ‘Bahas Bahasa’ and later on they released the album Taifun before embarking on a successful tour in six cities across Java. The band swiftly rose to become one of the brightest newcomers in the country’s music scene, they will launch a new music video on their official website www.barasuara.com, their new studio album will be released in February 2019!

Franz Ferdinand’s concert in Bali will also be livelier because the opening group who will perform is also no less famous and have many loyal fans, they are known as Sunset People Project – electronic music group of DJs (Ridwan G, Shawn & Heru) – that was formed in 2015. They consistently run monthly event and has made ‘Sunday Party’ as a new trend among Jakarta party-goers. They recently won an award as ‘Serial Event of The Year 2017′ by Paranoia Awards, they stay true to their vision of creating a platform of expression for new DJs or producers, and not to forget Bali show has more guests to spend your great weekend with, and they are Felix Dickinson, Sunmantra (live) and Seabass.

Since 2011, the event has been held at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade, which is a great, spacious venue that is easily accessible by public transportation and oversees the world-famous Hong Kong skyline at the main Harbourflap stage. Hence, Clockenflap’s atmosphere is one that is both amazing and memorable. I, myself, have been attending Clockenflap for the past 3 years. Although every year has been amazing, 2013 had a brilliant line-up, making it an experience that I can honestly cherish for the rest of my life.

Founded in 2008 by Jay Forster, Mike Hill and Justin Sweeeting, Clockenflap Multimedia Arts & Music Festival has played a crucial role in developing Hong Kong as a cultural hub for art, film and most of all, music. With a carefully crafted mixture of both international acts (Bombay Bicycle Club, Santigold, Primal Scream Azealia Banks) and local artists (DP, Sun Eskimos, The Yours, Uptown Rockers, Chochukmo), the festival has established itself to become one of Hong Kong’s coolest annual events.

Clockenflap 2013’s three-day festival was held between 29th November and 1st December. The many great local and international acts this year included indie heartthrobs The 1975 and new wave band Metric. Alternative rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, one of the headliners, played a head-bang worthy show, which was rather surprising with lead singer Robert’s mellow aura.

The Strypes was also extremely notable and surprising. They were put in to replace Two Door Cinema’s Club’s cancellation due to lead singer Alex contracting severe laryngitis. Despite being a last minute addition and extremely young, their mature musical expression and soulful talent made up for it. In fact, I have never in my life seen or heard a rock band able to incorporate a harmonica so passionately in a live set. All in all, their set was a fresh, entertaining experience.

Other great aspects of Clockenflap this year was included great quality and selection of food, popular international acts and relatively short waiting lines (for food, coupons and getting within the festival), which was a definite improvement from previous years.

The highlight of my festival was Franz Ferdinand, hands down.”Not only did they play a dance-worthy set, Alex Kapranos engaged the crowd with numerous chants of “we’re gonna burn this city!” from their track ‘This Fire’. Lively hipsters mosh pitted at the front of the stage while the band played a wonderful mixture of songs from all four albums.

But the most mind-blowing part was the encore, which included an energetic “Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action” and drum outro, where all four band members of Franz Ferdinand played a single drum set to close off their show and end the night. One of my more personal favorite moments was when my friend carried me on his shoulders (as I am rather short), and then Franz Ferdinand started playing “Jacqueline”, which also happens to be my name!

However, this year local acts were not as plentiful. I was slightly saddened to see that several of my favorite local indie bands were not playing this year unlike previous two years. Also, the time slots were only posted within festival ground. This was a bit troubling those planning to only see particular acts and not spend the entire day at the festival. Notes for the organizer, maybe to add more of local bands next time and an online time table would be extremely helpful, especially for the festival-goers only going for certain acts.

A note for those planning to go next year, although expected for a festival, merchandise and food are rather expensive, so bring enough money for coupon purchases. Those who prefer not to be in mosh-pits should stay closer to the back to refrain from getting squished, and if kids are brought for the arts and crafts and children’s stalls, families might want to leave near the late afternoon because that’s when the masses of people start pouring in for headliners.

In short, this year’s Clockenflap Multimedia Arts & Music Festival is definitely an event that people in Hong Kong and Asia should visit to celebrate different forms of art and culture.. [Text: Jacqueline Wong/Photos:Kitmin Lee]

After our ‘indie’ weekend early this month in Singapore for Camp Symmetry, we headed to the neighbor Malaysia with even bigger festival which combined art and music in MAEPS with big line ups such as Tegan & Sara, Franz Ferdinand, Efterklang, Sore, Obedient Wives Club, and much more.. too bad due to Alex Trimble’s of Two Door Cinema Club all their show in Asia had to be canceled. But anyway we met lots of friendly people and cool art stuff around, and for you who didn’t get the chance to get there, here’s our review of the fest so maybe you want to plan ahead for the next year!

How we get there? We went there by bus from Singapore, yes you read it right, 5 hours bus to Perhentian Serdang and a cab to the festival. Rain and sun can’t stop us from seeing what’s Urbanscapes all about. The venue itself was gigantic, maybe since it was actually Malaysian agricultural place, and the crowd was about the same as Singaporean festival goers or even more vary, since it was music and art festival. Many food stalls (so you won’t get hungry), exciting artwork and fancy pop up market.

How’s the first day? We were prepared with raincoats, boots and stuff, but the only thing we used that day was sunblock. Even though it was raining pretty heavy in Singapore, it was sunny like hell in Serdang. We arrived when Sore was playing at the Urbanscape stage, performing their hits as smoothly as usual. After that we scrolled the venue and couldn’t be more proud to see our bands performs and some friend’s art works exhibited there. Back to the main stage we saw Oh Chentaku perform, which was great indeed. Band that famous with their ‘Sing It Rock and Roll’ song, succeed brought the crowds to paid attention till their very last song.

We also went to the Next Stage where we witness some of the most random performance mixed by rapper and local ghost after. Its a bit surreal and funny at the same time. We dont have much time as we are heading to see another Indonesian act at Upfront stage, which is one of the line ups we didn’t expected to be amazed by. The Experience Brother, Daud and Ibrahim, proved once again that rock and roll are still alive. With songs taken from their Eye Contact album, the band succeed mixing Zeppelin’s rock and roll style with the spontaneous quirky only Indonesian can do it well, not to mention when they performed ‘She’s Alright’ which made the crowd couldn’t help but to sing a long.

Right after them, it was the Aussie’s very own next big thing, Last Dinosaurs. We’ve seen them several times already just in a year and yet they are still fun to watch. And apparently, they have huge fans here in Malaysia! Lots of teens, boys and girls, local and regional flew to Malaysia just to see this band. Performed the same set list as in Jakarta and Singapore, the band still being asked to do encore. Well, we hope that will encourage and inspire them to make more music for the next album.

And the headline of the night was Tegan & Sara. Even though we’ve seen them in Jakarta before, duo that known first time as ultimate commercial songs (well, I knew them from an advertisement) still had the thing to ‘heart-rob’ the crowds. Playing their hits such as ‘Alligator’ ,‘Back in Your Head’, ‘I Was A Fool’ to ‘Closer’ the crowd couldn’t be any happier than sing a long for more than an hour.

How’s the second day? On the second day we’re mostly chilling with our friends and people we met at the festival, talk with the artists around and enjoying ourselves by the cool vintage lo-fi performance by Obedient Wives Club. Group that has been recognize not as the female muslim group, but a group that consist of Singapore very own Keith Tan, YinQi, Sulaiman Supian, Lennat Mak and Cherie Ko, played songs from their EP ‘Murder Kill Baby’ and captured the crowds of lo-fi spectorgaze fans.

Beside OWC, we also ran to another stage where -another 4AD acts, Efterklang, performs. After our interview with Casper, we couldn’t be more surprised when Mads used ‘Angklung’ we gave for the intro of Hollow Mountain, followed by Casper and Rasmus on stage and that’s when all the magic of sounds happens! I mean really, they literarily used everything, from normal instruments, to ipad apps, to stage’s pillar like those Berlin Blue Man Group with less disco vibe. Despite of the heat outside combine with people inside the tent, this Danish band amazed the crowd with their electronic wave sounds. My worried about either the crowd were already melt by the heat or were there because of the music has been answered, when they forced to ‘pause’ their performance due to afternoon break, the crowd still remind the same. Ended by their hits Modern Drift, this band is definitely one of the band you must listen to if you are fans of Sin Fang, múm, and other Scandinavian experimental electronic music.

Right after Efterklang, we went to the highlight (or mine) of the festival seeing Franz Ferdinand! Even though I wasn’t a big fan, I couldn’t help but to sing a long and dance to their song. They performance were just addictive and let’s face it, no one could possibly stand still watching their energetic act. These Scottish ‘uncle’ brought all their hits to the table from Bullet, The Dark Of The Matinée, No You Girls, Tell Her Tonight, Evil Eye, Do You Want To, Walk Away, Horizon, CSF, Fallen, Jacqueline, Michael, Take Me Out, Love Illumination, This Fire, to Ulysses and not to mention their encore with Right Action, to Outsider. I think it has been a long time since I sang very loud and dance very passionately in a show.

As the technician packing the instruments, crowds went home, so it’s time for us to get back to reality. We took the last bus to the city center and grab the first bus to catch our flight home. Lets hope to see some more exciting line ups with less animal cause itchiness next year, and don’t forget to catch Urbanscapes’s final Satellite show featuring Canadian indie-rock giants Metric this December 3rd 2013.

More photos from the show here

For our fellow readers in Malaysia, the hypest two-dayer festival, Urbanscapes in Malaysia is back!!! With Franz Ferdinand, Two Door Cinema Club, Tegan and Sara, Efterklang as their headliners, Urbanscape will kick your ass. This festival will be held at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) on 23-24 November 2013.

In addition, Urbanscapes provides a wide range of the non-music acts and creative activities including conceptual contemporary art installations created by invited regional and international artists, urban standup comedy shows by the Comedy Club KL, improvisation theatresports by Actorlympics and perfumery workshop by Experience Market.

Beside of three big headliners, the festival will give you top notch international and local names, fashion retailers, art installation pieces and comedian shows. This annual festival will feature three indonesian bands, they are L’Alphalpha, The Experience Brother, Sore plus Oh Chentaku, Kyoto Protocol, Obedient Wives Club and They Will Kill Us All for the regional performers.

The other good things about this year’s Urbanscapes is it’s not about the big weekend but they’re also adding two satellite shows. The first one is before the big weekend (on 31 oct) featuring Explosions in The Sky and Mew and the second show after the big weekend (on 2 dec) featuring Metric. Urbanscape founder and organiser Adrian Yap explains that the reason they made satellite shows is because they don’t want to lose out on acts who aren’t able to make it for the weekend festival. So for you cool Malaysians, are you sure you want to miss such a great festival experience like this one? Go grab your Urbanscapes tickets!!

Weekend passes: RM187 (early bird); RM227 (presale); RM247
Satellite show: RM177 (per gig)
All-Access passes (festival plus satellite shows): RM397
Tickets are now on sale at www.ticketpro.com.my

Like numerous major international festivals such as Coachella (US), Glastonbury (UK) and Fuji Rock (Japan), Clockenflap has played a colossal role in showing off numerous groundbreaking artists of the 21st century.

Another concert another series of “Bet You Didn’t Know”! Since Bloc Party will have a show in Jakarta on March 20th 2013 (which is also the band’s first ever show in the city and let’s say ‘ Thank You‘ to Ismaya Live for bringing them), We have collected some facts that You might still think “is it a rumour?”, “I need to dig about its validity” or “I am a new fan of Bloc Party but please I need some facts that I have to know about them!”, well oh well, We will clear the rumour and pop the facts!

1.The band were formed in 1999 after Kele Okereke and Russel Lissack ran into each other at Reading Festival. But it was not their first meeting, because they have known each other since 1998.

2. If Bloc Party had a “historical places”. Franz Ferdinand’s concert must be one of it. Because in 2003, Kele gave a copy of debut single ‘She’s Hearing Voices‘ to British DJ Steve Lamacq. And he also handed it to Alex Kapranos. So that was pretty much how the band were discovered.

3. Eventhough all of the band’s member have so many disagreement and different taste in many way, but all of them are sure for one thing, They are a fan of the Broken Social Scene’s records.

4. There was a rumour about Bloc Party had a beef with Kaiser Chiefs. But it’s totally not true. In fact, Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs are a good friend! Apparently the press was the one who attempted to put some stuffs around.

5. Liam Gallagher has been known for his cold-handed work (We are talking about his work in Oasis. Not Beady Eye) once was asked about what he thinks of Bloc Party. And he said “They’re like a bunch of University Challenge students.”. And the band responded that his insult was a truly dissapointing. Well, what did you expect from The Gallaghers.

6. In Britain, Bloc Party’s first album “Silent Alarm” was released in Valentine’s Day. But in the US, it was released a month after.

7.It’s maybe the band’s first ever show in Jakarta. But the frontman, Kele Okereke , has done a show in Jakarta before. It was a DJ Set at Blow Fish in 2010.

8.There are so many stories about the lack of “K” in Bloc Party. But here’s the real one according to Gordon Moakes, “It sort of came from when I was a student and I was fascinated by political iconography; you know, like the idea of the Stars and Stripes and the Hammer and Sickle, and how East and West are kind of denoted by different kinds of things. So we liked the idea of the Bloc, the Eastern Bloc, and from that we got the idea of a Bloc Party, kind of like a Soviet image and a classic American image combined. So that’s kind of the true story”.

9. Kele Okereke is a fan of a fashion-themed Tv Show called “Project Runway”. And what is the Tv show that he dislikes the most? Jersey Shore. Well, every cool person doesn’t like seeing a full wax haired dude and Snookie.

10.Bloc Party’s debut album, Silent Alarm, was also shaped by Adele’s 21 producer. Paul Epworth.

Sony DADC building in London was destroyed during the riot in London, Monday August 8, 2011. The building which are the main warehouse of many UK Indie Labels distribution such as 4AD, Beggars, XL Recordings, Domino, Soul Jazz, Warp and Rough Trade had lost large amount of CD, Vinyls and LPs in fire. That including the physical release of Arctic Monkyes’ new single The Hellcat Spangled Shalala (which planned release on august 15th) will be delayed until further notice from the label and also Charlie Simpson’s debut solo album Young Pligrim which have been destroyed around 300.000 unites. The PIAS’s website itself has confirmed the incident from their website;

“There was a fire last night at the SonyDADC warehouse which services the physical distribution for [PIAS] in the UK and Ireland. [PIAS] is working closely with SonyDADC who are implementing their emergency plans. [PIAS]‘s UK offices in London and all other areas of our business are unaffected. More information will be communicated shortly to all our labels and partners.”

Many indie artists and other people in music business worried the most, especially retailer HMW where the shops affected on the first wave of the violence. They also mention it on their twitter, concerning the incident;

“Thoughts go out to all the labels who have lost their stock in PIAS fire.” -Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand)
“So looks like all our Sunday Best stock went up in flames last night in the PIAS blaze” -Rob da Bank (BBC DJ, Sunday Best Recordings)
“I’m going down to the riots to hand out tea and mars bars #london” -MIA (Singer)

Let’s hope this won’t last long, if the youth wants to tell something to the police or the government they should’ve discuss it in a proper way so it won’t cause much loss like this.
