The band’s name was inspired from the famous neurologist Sigmund Freud. The band that consist of Haikal Azizi (vocal/guitar), Nurachman Andhika (guitar), Mirfak Prabowo (bass) and Pratama Kusuma Putra (drums) was actually have been making music since 2008. Even though they haven’t released an album but earlier this year they have released an EP called ‘Cerebro’. The EP includes of four songs, Cerebro, The Long Haul, Ring of Saturn, and Atom Heart Father. I can easily feel what kind of ambiance that they want to show us. As for me it is a psychedelic rock. The band who just got back from they micro tour to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are currently giving you a free download on their website. Or if you prefer the old school style you can get their 12” vinyl.

The band’s musical architect, aesthetic director, and also producer, Rostam Batmanglij said on his twitter page that “It is a good time to tell you I think it’s our best record“. With help from Ariel Rechtshaid as co-producer, Batmanglij and Rechtshaid successfully built the ‘dark’ character on this album and made it to be their best record. If you listen the song ‘Hudson‘ and look at the album’s cover, it’s an art photograph taken by Neal Boenzi for The New York Times on November 24th 1966, you can easily feel the ambiance of the tunes.

Batmanglij and Koenig started writing materials for their third album right after they finished ‘Contra‘ tour in 2010. The band’s drummer, Chris Tomson helped them writing ‘Hannah Hunt‘, a song about Koenig’s classmates in college. After all the material wrapped up the band who just performed on Saturday Night Live last Saturday (11/6) began to record the album at L.A.’s Vox Studio.

Speaking of the whole album we can assume that it is different than the two previous albums. You can see the preppy Ivy Leagues grads have become more mature in every songs both for musics and lyrics. But you still can feel their unique characteristic. Like in ‘Diane Young‘ or ‘Dyin’ Young‘, ‘Unbelievers‘, ‘Finger Back‘ and ‘Worship You‘ you can still jumping around and dance your ass off (just like what you do when you listen to the songs on their previous albums). In the last track ‘Young Lion‘ you can hear Batmanglij’s tender voice because this song is written and sung by him.

The actor and director Steve Buscemi, who directed Vampire Weekend American Express Music Unstaged at Roseland Ballroom, said, “What I love about them is that you can either just get off on the musicality of it or go deeper.” and we couldn’t agree more with him.

The first stage we saw after gate check-in is Demajors Stage where Speakeasy, Adam Says, Tristan, Adrian Adioetomo, Kunokini, and Matajiwa had their gigs. Inside the building was the Jansport Stage where The Experience Brothers, Payung Teduh, The Adams, Rumah Sakit, and Efek Rumah Kaca lined-up. Around 6 pm the crowd was still easy, probably due to the heavy rain. We could enjoy the performance while sitting around the room, or go back to Demajors Stage to get some food or warm breeze, for food and smoke were not allowed in Jansport Stage.

By the time The Experience Brothers walked on stage, the crowd’s getting intense it was not enough to just sit around. Everyone’s starting to move forward for Heart Painted Black. Then we heard the girls were screaming as they saw Iga Massardi on stage. The crowd got bigger, She’s Allright chanted louder. As if it’s not enough, they explosively played a medley Black Sabbath’s Iron Man – Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit – The White Stripes’ Seven Nations Army.

To soothe down the burning sensation from The Experience Brothers performance, up next was Payung Teduh. Sungguh berbicara denganmu tentang segalanya yang bukan tentang kita, selalu bisa membuat semua lebih bersahaja.. Is (vocal) invited Icha, their feature for the new song, Mari Bercerita. Lovely song, adorable duet. Then came the intro of Berdua Saja and the whole room sang along, even without Is. Another surprise was the appearance of Ade Paloh SORE who joined in the song Menuju Senja.

Eventhough The Adams hasn’t produce new album since 2006 , their live performance is still as lively as ever. Selamat Pagi Juwita, Halo Beni, Waiting, Hanya Kau, and Berwisata have triggered everyone’s nostalgic side. Just like the previous band with their featuring partner, The Adams invited Cholil ERK in Konservatif. It’s also their first time playing other than acoustic version of Glorious Time, which was pretty good!

The 3rd Music Gallery also presented the resuming journey of Rumah Sakit. The band which was founded in 1994 has recently had their comeback. Playing eight songs from Datang until Hilang, Rumah Sakit has given one of their best show to their loyal listener.

Last to perform was Efek Rumah Kaca and their alter-ego, Pandai Besi. If you haven’t know who Pandai Besi is, they are basically ERK personnels with additional players in bass, guitar, piano, trumpet, and backing vocals who recreating ERK’s songs by inducing new arrangement. Kau dan Aku Menuju Ruang Hampa, Menjadi Indonesia, Jangan Bakar Buku, Balerina, and Di Udara were played by ERK and Pandai Besi back-to-back. The 3rd Music Gallery was wrapped to the end by ERK’s famous Desember, and  the clock showed 00.30am.

 Overall, The 3rd Music Gallery has noticeable improvements than their predecessors. The show, the crowd, the system, the vibes: it’s all been great. MCs of Jansport Stage were highly entertaining it made a fun additional show to the event. So when some believe that third time is the charm, to you we’d say, agree to that! (Tiara Ayuwardani)

Kuala Lumpur had not put much sounds like Singapore or Jakarta does, but thankfully, this capital city of Malaysia starts growing on its indie live music scene! Urbanscapes is one of the best proofs. Urbanscapes is an annual event only all-day creative arts festival that combines communities and participants from the fields of music, arts, fashion, visual design and much more. The festival started small in 2002 but then became larger as the time goes. Its last edition in 2012, brought the Icelandic band, Sigur Ros.

In the early of 2013, The Bee ( it’s a restaurant placed in downtown of Kuala Lumpur which is also a space for local arts and community to converger their passion) starts doing a project called “Upfront” which is a live music experience where the fans will be having an up-close and intimate experience with their favourite bands. Thay have invited Grimes, How To Dress Well and The Vaccines.

Have you heard about Ra Ra Riot latest album, Beta Love? Well if you haven’t, you really have to check it out as they share it from their channel only for this week.

Who are they? Are you sure, you named yourself music enthustiastic but haven’t heard about Ra Ra Riot before? This is the sample of what New York has turns an indie band into too-much-productive-and-having-a-good-time band.  RRR was fromed in early 2006, and as a young musicians they gained lots of good feedback from their performances in such early age (ok I probably shouldn’t talk as if I was an lame old jerk writer), but anyway, after the ups and downs they released their EP on the following year through Rebel Group label, and signed with major label V2 Records and released A/B single on 7″ vinyl record “Dying is Fine” and “Each is Fine”, and later on 2008 they released their debut LP and their debut album “The Rhumb Line” through Barsud Records, which their music video “Can You Tel” won best music video in 2009 Finger Lakes Film Festival. In 2010, as they were based on the best indie bands could ever be, they collaborate with other Indie musicians such as Chris Walla (DCFC) and Rostam Batmaglij (Vampire Weekend) for their second album “The Orchard”. Their loveable pop rock music then became more famous as the songs were featured on many comercial and tv shows.

So how’s this latest album goes? The band’s third studio album “Beta Love” is set to be released on January 22, 2013, but it will aslo be the band’s first studio album since the departure of cellist Alexandra Lawn. Basically this album was so much fun, you want to use it in your summer party album. Even tough it was pretty much a new set of music style than their previous baroque pop sound, but it still have the magic to make you move. Their first song “Dance With Me” is so much fun you just want to repeat it over and over, the next song “Binary Mind” is the perfect song you want to use to forget your ex and just be happy for your life right now. Maybe “Beta Love” will be their single , and it does deserve to be a single, as it was the perfect combination of a urban city theme soundtrack but less hyper fun. Slower tunes can be found on “Is It Too Much”, ”When I Dream” and “For Once” which I can imagine it will be use when the band have to take a rest from their attractive act during their live performance, it’s a nice songs though. I also like “Angel Please” which it reminds me a little of Passion Pit but less high pitched vocal. “Wilderness” is a bit like Hurts kinda theme songs but less sad. “What Do I Do” and “I Shut Off” are another songs you can basically use for any situation. You know, listening to this album just reminds me of either it’s gonna be bad or good feedback they will receive next Tuesday, this album will remains as the perfect soundtrack for everyone who wants a happier day.

So, what are you waiting for? Stream “Beta Love” NOW  before you have to pay for it :p (but if you love it, make sure you buy it!)

White Shoes and The Couples Company, a pop indie band from Jakarta is on their way to get International attention, fortunately after performed in Clockenfest, Hongkong by the end of 2011, now they have been chosen to perform in Midem Festival Cannes, France together with another Indonesian indie band The Young Liars. And to last monday (23/1) more than 150 people gather at Cikini, Jakarta to see the band perform for “Senin Sore di Tjikini”, music and auction event to raise fund for the band’s trip to Cannes organised by Majalah Cobra.

The event itself started at 05.30PM and opened by We Love A.B.C, a three member band consist of Ricky (WSATCC bassist) and his two kids, Sisi (8) and Saci (5). We Love A.B.C succeed entertained the audience by performing a descent music. After played 4 songs, which one of them is the popular The Smiths’ song, Please Let Me Get What I Want, WSATCC come and doing acoustic performance which taken from both of their albums. The event then continued with the auction of the band’s memorable photos. From 10 photos and 1 Print making, they had sold 5 photos with price up to five millions rupiah.

After the auction, WSATCC back to the stage by doing full band performance. They played more less eight songs, started with their song Good Ol Days and ended with song Matahari. It was a wonderful
intimate evening with White Shoes and The Couples Company, and we wish them a huge success out there on their future ahead. [dian]

If we can quote from George Gerswhin that ”True music must repeat the thought and inspirations of the people and the time..” ,  probably that prove whats happening right now in our local music scene. Time changes and we can get influences and ideas from so many places, some are just making it worst but some making the best of us out. Here are some of our local bands that we sees potentially giving their best out for this year.

STARS & RABBITS ( YK ) are an Indonesian folk music duo, formed in early 2011 in Yogyakarta. The group consisted of singer-songwriter Elda Suryani (born May 29, 1983) and musician Adi Widodo (born July 31, 1983). Their single ‘Worth It’ drew them attention from a small variety of communities in Indonesia and the United Kingdom, as part of the indie pop/folk scene. Stars and Rabbit engages a do-it-yourself approach to writing and recording. Their music is a melding of pop and folk influences with raw simplicity of composition, arrangement, and performance.

Why? In this folk era which is getting bigger specially in Indonesia, this Jogja’s duo may have more attention because of the vocalist, Elda which previously was with supergroup EVO, have more soft and comfortable sound in this band.

HIGHTIME REBELLION ( JKT ) A breath of fresh air with a unique breed between Brit pop, funk, folk, the psychedelic beat and baseline of House music, perfected with the sultry voice of its female vocalist, Indonesian indie band Hightime Rebellion, shapes a music genre of its own. Their upcoming album, which includes singles ‘Crest of Mind’, ‘Waking Hour’, ‘Writer in the Window’ and the notable ‘All Things Borrowed’, sounds like a Beatles-esque cover of Blondie songs with an atmosphere reminiscent of the Mamas and the Papas.

Hightime Rebellion gained early popularity and cult following through the club music scene such as Indo Dance Music Festival and Revive, transgressing to indie gigs namely JKT: Superbad!, RRREC Music Festival, Time Out on the Up BDG: Minimaliste, Interlude. They finally drew public attention through large events, such as Nylon Music Festival 2011, Trax FM Terusik Traxkustik 2011 and Java Rockin’land 2011.

Why? Maybe this is one of the bands that we heard mostly in every gigs in 2011. After releasing 3 of their singles last year, they promised to make their full studio album this year, as one of Jakarta’s band who got signed under FFWD Records their debut album will be one of the most anticipated this year by indie music listener.

POLKA WARS ( JKT ) is an alternative band which formed in early 2010. At first, this Jakarta-based band consists of 4 young men : Karaeng Raja Adjie, Billy Aulia Saleh, Giovanni rahmadeva & Xandega Tahajuansya. Polka wars will also be assisted by a variety of reliable producers with a variety of different backgrounds from Indonesia. The first is Uga Swastadi, who’s continuing his musical studies in US at the moment, to the various experimental / noise / hip hop musicians such as Rizky Auliya (Sawi Lieu, Sangsaka Worship) and Wing Narada Putra (Maverick ), with hope that they’ll got a wide range of song characteristics on their next release.

Why? The rising of folk era will be more competitive because of quite many old bands coming back this year or some of them maybe changing their genre to folk. So this band with some Mumford & Sons kinda style, can be another alternative band we should anticipated as the next big thing.

Roman Foot Soldiers ( JKT ) Like their hometown Jakarta, Roman Foot Soldiers is a blend of many eccentric musical characters. Such contrasts however didn’t produce a clash of creativity, but it did inspire the group to pursue a sound unique enough to satisfy all band members’ appetite.

As for the name of the band, it represents both their fascination for epic war films and solidarity. Six distinct pieces brought together by a common cause: a passion for music.

Why? The band was made in Vancouver, Canada and actually already released their EP titled Kitsilano with 2 singles and a video clip titled ‘You Make Me Feel Like Summer’, and in late 2011 they also released their new video clip titled ‘Waterfront’. We put them on our list is because beside of their good looking appearances and also their songs remind us of a France band, Phoenix

The Triangle ( BDG ) With sounds of indie rock mixed with acoustic guitar, The Triangle apparently got much influences from many alternative music from Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkin, The National till Snow Patrol. With music that more using dark theme, Riko which we may know from Mocca band, making this band more authentically as dark yet melodically sounded, or as they say their music are “Masculine, sophisticated, grande, technical, and melodious”

This band itself is on the process of making new album, and they said they’re inspired by isolation theme, which we can hear from their first single “How Could You”.

Why? Riko which more recognise from the swing indie pop band Mocca, already make moves and get more attention from his twitter and social network strategy and got positive respond from his fans, so this year they are going to release their second single. Lets see if Riko and his band can erase the image of his pervious swing style band.

Deugalih & Folks After spending years setting his “solo career” into first gear—-post-Schizophones—-in 2010, Deugalih officially created another talented ensemble to accommodate his peaking interest in folk music.

On August 17th, 2011, their single album debut, Earth, has been released by Wastedrockers. The single “Earth” was actually an old song by Deugalih, written in 1998. The song then received a full make-over and rearrangement which later was rerecorded as their single debut. Earth begins the Deugalih & Folks’ journey to their debut LP next year. Chairlift, Something 

Its been a while since we listen to their Bruises hits song, but wait no more cause this New York Band will released their 2nd album this january 23(UK) and 24(US) by Columbia/Young Turks. The track also includes Sidewalk Safari, Met Before, Guilty as Charge, Cool as Fire and many cool tunes that we also cant hardly wait.

Of Montreal, Paralytic Stalks 

Maybe beside their Cirque du Soleil, what’s best Canada can offer is this rock band Of Montreal. Still with their psychedelic marauders theme and numerous amount of members, Paralytic Stalks will be released on Feb 7th. Recorded at Kevin Barnes’s home studio and collaborating with woodwind/brass player Zac Cowell.

The album will includes a seven minute orchestral pop epic song “Wintered Debts” which you can see below, “Gelid Ascent,” “Spiteful Intervention,” “Dour Percentages,” “We Will Commit Wolf Murder,” “Malefic Dowery,” “Ye, Renew the Plaintiff,” “Exorcismic Breeding Knife,” and “Authentic Pyrrhic Remission.”

Heartless Bastards, Arrow

This will be the band’s first album to be released under their new Brooklyn ‘indie’ label, Partisan Records on Valentine’s day. The band will be appear at SXSW to support their new album.

School Of Seven Bells, Ghoststory

The amped-up vibe of Ghoststory, due February 28th, is partly due to when it was recorded — between gigs on the band’s tour with Interpol earlier this year. “We brought the energy from our shows straight back home,” says Curtis, who sketched out tunes in the Brooklyn apartment he shares with singer Alejandra Deheza. “The idea was to write really quickly and not second guess anything.” -spin

The Magnetic Fields, Love at the Bottom of the Sea

Santigold, Master of My Make Believe

Santi White aka Santigold aka Santogold had released her first debut album three years ago and collaborate with many musician since such as Kanye West, Christina Aguilera, M.I.A, Lykke Li, Beastie Boys till Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. With her performance at Clockenflap which we had review on our tweets was a big hell a show, we definitely can expect something big for her second album on this Spring.

The Shins, Port of Morrow

We love them since their first album in 2007 Wincing the Night, this American indie rock band will be release on James Mercer’s own label, Aural Apothecary on March 2012.

Andrew Bird, Break It Yourself

Since his last album Noble Beast in 2009, we haven’t heard something new from this Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist, lyricist and whistler, but on March 6 Bird will released his sixth studio album Break It Yourself. The album itself is produced by Bird and recorded in Western Illinois and will be released by Mom + Pop Music. Sigur Rós, TBA

This Icelandic post-rock band has been on hiatus since 2008, and replaced by news and songs from Jónsi Birgisson. But this year around spring, the group will be back with their new album. Lets hope their new album will sound as airy as we used to loving it.

The XX, TBA

With Mercury Prize for their first release, we surely does have high expectation of their second album. Even though they had confirmed to released it in 2012 but the date hasn’t been set out yet. but we believed you all have already listen to the demo right? what do you think about it?

Gaslight Anthem, TBA

The badass New Jersey punk rock poets are expected to come together once again to release their next album – their first after signing with their new label Mercury Records – around July of 2012. Earlier this year, Gaslight members Brian Fallon and Ian Perkins dropped Elsie, the debut album from side project, The Horrible Crowes.

Arcade Fire, TBA

2011 maybe the best year for this Montreal-based band who had won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year for The Suburbs. Their fourth album is expected to release sometime in 2012. The date is not yet set, but you will be the first to know from us once the news coming out.

Dirty Projectors, TBA

Another NY experimental band that has been quite taking our attention since their first album Orca in 2009. David Longstreth and the gang will release their 11th studio album around Spring. Lets hope the album will take our attention also this year.

Grizzly Bear, TBA

No release date has been announced for their next album, though the band stated on their Facebook page that “with all my heart and soul, I promise a new album in 2012! Unless something crazy happens. But let’s not get crazy, let’s just get creative!”.

They might be the most phenomenal indie rock band today. Their previous album Veckatimest, was too much to be appeared as the “Best of” lists for 2009 such as on Pitchfork, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, etc. So lets hope their new album will be as creative as we hope to.

Animal Collective, TBA

Baltimore may have their famous broadway dancing choir or something like that, but we may know the town from this experimental psychedelic band, which sadly now they based in New York City. With members from -i don’t have any words to describe an indie band that consist many indie bands-  Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and Geologist (Brian Weitz).

Portner, in an interview for Madison, revealed that they have just finished writing sessions and that they intend to start full recording sessions in January 2012 for the next album.

“We just finished another two weeks of writing sessions and put together five new songs..We’re really excited about this record … and it’s been really fun jamming with those guys again.”

Best Coast, TBA

This California garage rock / surf pop / lo-fi / indie rock band which consist of Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, will released their 2nd album sometime in summer 2012, with Jon Brion as the producer. They already announce that their first appearance will be for Big Day Out.

The Walkmen, TBA

2012 might be the year for this band to shine. After their Lisbon album on 2010, the new album will also mark the band’s 10-year anniversary, with lots of shows and a first-ever vinyl release of their 2002 debut album, Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone (1/10). Yes they are going to release not one but two full-length albums in late spring or summer 2012. Maybe because its already been a while since their Odd Blood, so they trying to make it up? jk. The band have revealed that they have more than 22 songs ready.

To SPIN, Singer Chris Keating says that “one [is] the real album with three-and-a-half to four minute pop songs, and another that’s more like a soundtrack and released on the internet.” The “real” album is purportedly made up of 3 and 4 minute pop songs. Of the sound of these songs Keating admits “if it sounds too much like something we’ve done in the past, we don’t do it.” So how does it sound, well see what you make of this; Keating says “It’s like an Aaliyah album if you played it backwards and slowed it down. Or David Bowie’s Lodger. Those two are major influences.”
