Australian Indie-rock band, The Jungle Giants surged the stage of The Bee @ Publika on their first visit to Malaysia last Thursday (23rd April). Being a prominent name in the Australian indie scene, it was not far before long that The Jungle Giants got their fame widened to music lovers here. Being the second pitstop of their ‘Every Kind of Way ‘ Australasian tour, The Jungle Giants rocked the stages of Jakarta before heading down here for their long-awaited show. “Come and Be Alone With Me” and “Domesticated Man” were amongst the tracks from the band’s first full-length album ‘Learn to Exist’ that got the crowd pumped up before introducing the four band members.

Band mascot ,Cesira Aitken, swooned the hearts of the crowd with her prowess on the guitars (and charm) as lead-vocalist/guitarist Sam Hales introduced several songs that were unheard before that the band have been currently writing. The positive response to these irresistibly feet-tapping songs shows that the upcoming album is going to be a promising one.

Although the set lasted only a mere hour, it was definitely a fun experience without a moment’s rest. They certainly kept the momentum at a high with upbeat songs like “Anywhere Else” and “Skin To Bone”. The setlist also included noteworthy songs from their EP ‘She’s A Riot’ such as “Don’t Know What To Do” and hit single “She’s A Riot” that we all know and love. The Jungle Giants ended their set while maintaining the energy with their single “I Am What You Want Me To Be” which led the crowd to a wild, raving response.
Known for his pastel Norwegian self, Erland Øye has made his mark on several notorious bands in the Indie Folk genre, most notably Kings Of Convenience and also The Whitest Boys Alive. After a long hiatus since his first oh-so-adventurous solo album, Unrest, he brings to the table his second full feature album, Legao.

Øye’s music is always apparent in his Indie pop style with his other bands bringing a breezy melancholic brightness; since Legao is recorded with Icelandic reggae band Hjálmar, expect the same vibe during the show with essences from Raggae and Electro to casino sway along to.

While a mere backstory to Øye does him little to no justice, get ready to witness another aspect of this brilliant Norwegian musician as he performs solo live at The Bee, Publika on Monday, 23rd of March along with his backing band The Rainbows!

Tickets are RM98 (pre-sale) and RM128 (at the door).

Recovering from rainfall from past months, there couldn’t be more of a beautiful day to alert that amazing gig was happening that night (14/01) at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (KLPAC). Surrounding the venue you could feel the suns warmth, hear ripples form by the lake and just simply enjoy the peacefulness of it all, away from the city hustle and bustle.

As the sun came down, one by one the parking spacesfilled up with people. Social pools grouped inside with beers at hand, also those who’re outdoors with cigarettes in their fingers. They were all eager to drown themselves with music from musician cum graphic designer – Tycho.

After an amusing opening by local talent Darren Ashley, anxious faces all round await Scott Hensen to take the stage, along with his newly added band-mates: Zac Brown and Rory O’connor. Dawning their set with the first track to their latest album, Awake, it instantaneously captures your ears. Heightened by the dynamic acoustics in the hall highlighting every instrument with utmost clarity. Accompanied by stunning visuals from projectors matching the mood of every song, losing yourself to the intricacy of it all was all that could be done. Even so, at this point of time it was apparent that something was off; everyone is seated conservatively in numbered seats, tapping their feet and nodding seated and in place. Even Scott notes the oddity, mentioning that it’s his first time performing for a seated audience.

There was still something unworldly though, despite the crowd arrangements. air in the room just felt somewhat lighter with more room to Colorado defensive driving Institute has driving lessons and classes available in Longmont, Louisville/Lafayette, Broomfield and Boulder. move. Being carried away by Tycho’s melancholic yet uplifting music coupled by visuals from mountains and sunsets to climbing ice glaciers and striding across the desert. Tilting head back, there was just no way but to get carried away from the first note of each track. Not forgetting Zac’s insane gunning on the casino online drums along with Scott’s gesticulations as the bass line gets more complex.

Sitting down was more than prodigious mid-set – gallant efforts from fans to get up and move prior to this remained ignored but not without prevail. Soon after it was like a domino effect. Once one started to get up and progress from the layman two-step, the rest began to join the bandwagon and before you could tell, there was already a makeshift dance floor in front of Tycho filled to the brim. Officials were flustered; all that pent up energy radiating from the crowd just couldn’t be contained.

When the band remerged for their encore, beats from the band were lifted to an insatiable degree. This highlights Tycho’s progression: how adding two likeminded band mates could heighten their sound tremendously, evolving from the “I made this in my garage” songs to masterpieces that spoke to many even without a single lyric. There was just absolutely no way that anyone in that venue could sit down for it. Complaints or not, It just felt right and in the end, it finally felt like the gig it was meant to be.
It sure isn’t easy being a touring musician. What more with a band like Mogwai, who have to lug around no less than 6 amps all across the globe. Die-hard fans leaped over the moon when it was announced that Mogwai would be returning to KL after almost 5 years since they last set our ears ablaze with their signature wall of sound. The venue was packed with eager post-rock fan boys that look like they were in a local 4-piece post-rock band of their own — no doubt many of whom were inspired by Mogwai’s shoegazey sounds that have paved the way for the Malaysian post-rock scene.

Mogwai’s return to the Malaysian stagefront was greeted with thunderous cheers and applause from fans who patiently waited through the soundchecks that seemed to have lasted for an eternity. The Scottish boys kicked things off with “Heard About You Last Night” from their latest release, Rave Tapes which was graced the title of number 1 best selling vinyl LP in the UK.

Even watching the band switch around their instruments amongst themselves was like watching a graceful dance, with the multi-talented boys never missing a beat when transitioning from one song to the other.

Playing with the soft-loud dynamics at ear-shattering volumes that would make Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine proud, the euphoric sensation started kicking in where feedback and noise began to morph into sweet music. Many of the audience members seen closing their eyes and letting their body sway to the rhythm as they plunged 30 feet deep into their inner realms, surrounded by the atmospheric feels of Mogwai’s music — while instrument fanboys could be seen salivating over bassist Dominic Aitchison’s Travis Bean bass guitar and guitarist John Cummings’ ultra rare Fender Electric XII 12-string guitar.

With Malaysia being the last stop for this leg of their tour, guitarist Stuart Braithwaite wasn’t stingy at all with his gratitude as he kept thanking the responsive crowd at the end of each song. The band saved the best for last with clear fan favorites “Hunted By A Freak” and “Mogwai Fear Satan.” It was uncertain if the audiences left with the same hearing abilities they had at the start of the night, but with a performance like that, it is certain that no fan was left unsatisfied.

Soundscape Records is thrilled to present San Francisco based electronic/ambient act TYCHO, live in Kuala Lumpur on 14 January 2015 at Pentas 1, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC).

For nearly a decade, TYCHO has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a four-piece band. Reaching an entire new realm of sonic possibilities this time out, Awake is situated in the present, reaching Hansen’s vision of TYCHO like never before. “This is, in many ways, the first true TYCHO record.”

TYCHO is influenced by and has been compared to artists such as DJ Shadow, Ulrich Schnauss, and the Scottish electronic music duo, Boards of Canada. His music captures
the sound of 1970s analog media while remaining both progressive and futuristic. Themes of nostalgia, longing, childhood and the natural world are interspersed throughout TYCHO’s work. Brief interludes or vignettes also feature in TYCHO’s earlier work. In Past Is Prologue, excerpts from broadcasts accompanied by atmospherics were selected and included by Hansen to capture a specific moment or mood. Overall, the mixture of electronic synths, live instrumentation, and old school sound clips creates a very relatable, organic sound. Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career.

“This is the first time in my life I’ve dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous TYCHO releases came to fruition from Hansen’s delicate solo approach to constructing a song, tweaking each peak and valley, but ‘Awake’ is three like-minded people coming together where music becomes the sole purpose and true expression becomes the result.

Tickets are priced at RM118 (Category1), RM98 (Category2) and RM88 (Category 3) and will go on sale on 3 December.
Tickets are available online via Ticketpro and walk-in purchase at KLPAC & Penangpac box office, Rock Corner outlets, The Guitar Store outlets.

Six years and counting, Wild Beasts have paved a smooth path in the indie rock charts and with “Present Tense” really hit the nail. With the hints of pop, unearthed lyrics and a whole lot of synths we were excited to hear what they had to offer in their first time down to The Bee, Publika.

You could hear the maturity growth in their music through the albums leading up to their latest “Present Tense”, and we got the opportunity to have a sit down with Chris Talbot and Tom Fleming to hear more about how they’ve grown since their early years.

With the new addition of synths and hints of pop – what prompted the change from the album ‘Smother’ to ‘Present Tense’?

Tom: I guess it’s simply curiosity, natural curiosity. We listen to other people make more sounds and think, we want to do that. We didn’t necessarily know how to do them at that point of time, so what you hear on the record is essentially learning how to use them. It’s by no means an expert record, but just exploring new sounds and methods of composing. I guess it was what we felt like we wanted to do.

Chris: Time as well. Because we realised it’s about time to do things. I wouldn’t say that it’s a monotonous cycle to release, tour, record. But we were in that doldrum. So we wanted a little break from that touring lifestyle. It was the first time we had money in the bank to sit down for a year and go on and do our own creative thing.

Tom: I mean, playing shows are wonderful but ultimately what lasts are the things you make.

When you guys started off you had a rough concept of what you guys wanted Wild Beasts to

Tom: I would say what we want to be has changed, we’ve learnt more and things have changed.

Chris: You don’t want to second-guess yourself, having a grand plan and then stick to it. That won’t be terribly exciting. It’s going down the path of the unknown.

Wanderlust is a lyrically strong song in the album, seemingly dissing those who sell out. Would you guys say its better to stay true rather than to “sell out”?

Tom: Maybe not right now but at the time, it was a bit more aggression that was deliberate, to be a bit more swaggerey. We’ve been away for a little while and online casino we wanted to make something to announce that we were back. But I think it still feels current and what we’re doing now, but we’re starting to grow a bit more distance in those songs and thinking maybe we can do something else now.

Wanderlust itself connotes a longing for travel. After having successful tours around Europe and America, now even in Asia do you still long to be back in Kendall writing music? How does the inspiration differ?

Tom: I like travelling and I’ve learnt a lot about the world by travelling places but it also makes you think of your home in a different way, it’s like when you’re young your home is the world. But now i realize what a small little island Britain is and what a small town. There’s a small island culture, you see yourself refracted through other people’s eyes but it teaches you stuff.

Chris: I have friends back home who never leave the town, and they would get to go on holiday once in awhile. But they won’t get to go to exciting new places like KL. This is not really a holiday destination people will come to around the drop of the hat. To travel around Europe is like how you would travel around Asia, but crossing those boundaries is very different and it makes you think about home a little bit more but it’s a privilege to do it because we know not everyone can do it.

Having a broad variation in music, organizing material for a show could be a headache and you guys have performed in numerous festivals be it big or small. How would it differ, preparing for these two contrasts of shows?

Tom: Our albums and the things we write about are quite varied so there’s something to bring people on a route through. You have to be aware when you play in a big show it’s a different. It has to keep people’s attention. Whereas in a room like this, you’ve already got it. You bring people on a bit more of a different ride. You make sort of tiny sounds and people hear it.

What would self mean to you?

Tom: It’s a mistake to think of yourself as an island, you need to think of yourself. Picture this: there’s this line leading you from the first amphibian that crawled up the land, the first fish that crawled out of sea. There’s a link, from you, to that. So to think about self as a one being is ridiculous. It’ll be missing the big picture, missing the woods for the trees.

Chris: I think it’s an age thing, if we look back before the release of our first record, when we were in our early 20’s we were probably really selfish. You only start to get a notion of other people, respecting them and what they should be. It only comes with the process of growing up.

Urbanscapes, Malaysia’s month-long creative arts festival, have added Kimbra and Jagwar Ma to the line-up for the festival’s finale on Dec 6 at the Horse Ranch, Resorts World Genting. In addition to a wide-range of visual and experiential art offering, Urbanscapes’ festival finale features a diverse music line-up that caters to all aural palates by moving beyond the indie music genre. Urbanscapes will kick-off its twelfth year with month-long activities that include satellite shows, a host of pop-up parties and pocket events throughout the month of November.

Grammy Award winner Kimbra (“Settle Down”, “Cameo Lover”), the New Zealand-born mononymous art-pop songwriter will make her way from Melbourne to Genting Horse Ranch for a performance that draws inspiration from a wide musical spectrum. Her latest album The Golden Echo is a vivid, vivacious, and ambitious arc of pop and funk that conveys an array of questions and insights. It’s at once a dancing record and thinking record, inspired by such diverse musical touchstones as Prince, ’70s R&B, ’90s pop (the first single is affectionately titled “90s Music”), and The Mars Volta, but heralding the full arrival of a distinctive artist. Kimbra became a global presence via her ear-turning role on Gotye’s international No. 1 hit “Somebody That I Used to Know,” which earned her and Gotye honors for “Record of the Year” and “Best Pop Duo/Group” at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

An army of music gatekeepers in the likes of NME and Pitchfork all believe the Sydney-based psychedelic/dance band Jagwar Ma (“The Throw”, “Uncertainty”) deserve acclaim — and there’s no questioning why. Known for their signature juxtaposition of voice and electronics, Jagwar Ma started as a musical project born out of studio jams and home recordings, radio frequency manipulation, TR808 patterns, MPCs loops, vintage amps and a treasured 7-inch collection. This serendipitous string of events and obsession have given the band a sound much like J-Dilla playing Primal Scream covering the Beatles.
Expect an electrifying set with soul this Urbanscapes.

Staying true to its brand as a full-spec creative arts festival, Urbanscapes will play host to a myriad of unconventional festival activities that invites guests to explore, experience the festival with all senses. Urbanscapes is turning that assumption that stables are just for horses. A wander through the festival grounds will take the crowd to ‘The Democratic People’s Republic of North Bangsar’, a mock parody country with a back story that is laugh-out-loud hilarious — and perhaps, plausible. Produced by Terry & The Cuz and Kuah Jenhan, North Bangsar offers an experience much like walking onto a film set. Festival goers get to meet its mayor — Jenhan — and explore the town, get a ‘prescription’ from a Chinese Medicine Hall and participate in the ‘local’ activity of choice — real serious bolster fight skirmishes.

Urbanscapes has always been a platform for emerging artists to showcase their talent. Organisers will invite muralists like Oak & Bindi, Ian Mutch, Jojo Yusof and TRUSK to showcase their work on upcycled canvases put together by Arthur Lamon.

The Generalists return with a collaboration befitting the landscape of Urbanscapes’ new-found home, this time with teepees to present their Market of Experiences. Walk through this market and expect to be surprised; uncap little stories that tumble out of a dispenser reminiscent of a typical Malaysian childhood. Let go anxieties by doing what our mothers told us not to — smash glassware just for fun. And if fate truly lies in the stars, ask a Singapore Poetry Slam Winner to improvise a tarot card-inspired poem.

Relive childhood play and help water move through the channels, and explore the sounds, shapes and power of water with The Biji-Biji Initiative’s interactive water tower. This tower will also light up in the night — turning it also into an art installation.

As previously announced, on Dec 6, festival-goers can look forward to soak in the anthemic sounds of the Los Angeles-based indie rock band Local Natives (“Gorilla Manor”, “Heavy Feet”) that Pitchfork described as a “sort of West Coast ‘Grizzly Bear’ [the band]”. Playing alongside them will be the legendary American college rock outfit The Lemonheads (“It’s a Shame About Ray”) whose cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs Robinson” paved a way to a breakthrough in their salad days.

Scottish synthpop band Chvrches (“Recover”, “Lies”), will perform at 7 pm, Nov 19 at KL Live. The trio, whose track “The Mother We Share” was featured in the opening video for the 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland this year. American comedy rock duo Tenacious D (“Tribute”, “Wonderboy“), featuring actors/musicians Jack Black and Kyle Gass will play Urbanscapes’ third Satellite Show on Dec 1 at KL Live. The Scottish post-rock band Mogwai (“Take Me Somewhere Nice”) often championed by the late John Peel of BBC Radio will take their brand of shoegazing, instrumental metal renditions to Urbanscapes’ Satellite Show this year on 7 pm, 30 Nov, also at KL Live.

Also completing the festival line-up are local and regional acts such as:

OJ Law

Ali Aiman

Najwa

June Marieezy

Faiq and the Manja Mob

The Cotton Field Scarecrowes

Cashew Chemists

Paperplane Pursuit

Jumero

Dirgahayu

Highlighting a myriad of Malaysia’s homegrown entrepreneurs and artisans, expect offerings from:

Ash Be Nimble

Mosaic Bijoux

Power of Word

Psychedelic Store

Nyo

Hailing from a land of female electro-pop aficionados, Lydmor is the next rising act. After having her first album, “a pile of empty tapes” release in 2012 and another one in the works, we were privileged to see her live at The Bee, Publika on the 16th of October as the onset of her first Asian tour.

Lydmor (Real name Jennifer Rossander) kicked off her show with “Electric Mistress” – dauntlessly stepping up the electro-pop flow of the night. Initially the crowd was pretty mundane, having an invisible barrier between them and the songstress. Maybe it was the lack of anticipation from a fresh face in the scene but as soon as Jenny hit the stage, fiddled around with her laptop and sang the first note; raw emotion was simply oozing out through each song. It’s a light pleasure at how Jenny gives a brief description before most of her songs in the set – like a header of a story about to be told. From sad songs about “presents being returned” and “angry songs about angry people” its as though we were stepping into the phase of life when the song was written, and the beauty of it all is that she just adds her own musical chops while cohering them with electro dance tunes, accompanied by her serene vocals, it creates a cozy ambiance where she could connect and have a deeper musical experience together with the crowd.

The deep connection was more prominent halfway through Lydmor’s set as she chilled down and dedicated songs to her boyfriend, Andreas from Helmet Compass. Covering “Drugs in my pocket” as an acoustic piece. Singing from the heart isn’t an easy thing to do, but when achieved the lyrics go beyond their words, and having Andreas in the room with her made it all more prominent. Picking casino it back up later with “Lampost light”, no longer was the crowd shy as it began, the void between stage and audience was gapped and fancy footwork was seen around till the end of her set. It’s hard not to get captured by Jenny’s eccentric movements on stage as she performs – how she gracefully but yet awkwardly sways her way between synthesizers and keyboard, flailing her arms around synchronizing to the melody of the songs, and how she generally occupies what little of the stage there was.

Wrapping up the night with fan favorite “Youth”, Jenny bolts down from the stage striding across the floor singing parts of it on top of a table across the room, ending her set poles apart from how it began. Her traits as a musician is really what constitutes a great performer, making Lydmor an upcoming act not to be missed and with another album to be released, we’re truly excited to see how far she matures with her music.

Urbanscapes, Malaysia’s creative arts festival, announced that American comedy rock duo Tenacious D, featuring actors/musicians Jack Black and Kyle Gass, will play another Urbanscapes Satellite Show on Dec 1 at KL Live. Tenacious D’s show is an 18-and-over show.

Self-styled, and absolutely the ‘Greatest Band in History’, Tenacious D started playing together in Gass’s studio apt on Cochran Ave. in Los Angeles. No one could have ever dreamed of where their genius would take them, but take them it did.

The band had a variety series on HBO that aired in 1999. Their self-titled album was released in the fall of 2001 with Epic Records and was quickly certified at gold-selling status, and has since been certified platinum. The duo completed their first feature film together, “Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny” for New Line Cinema, which was released in November 2006. The album “Rize of the Fenix” followed in 2012.

In 2013, Black and Gass founded and hosted Festival Supreme, a music and comedy festival in Santa Monica, CA which featured the likes of Adam Sandler, The Mighty Boosh, Tim & Eric and many more of the greatest acts in musical comedy.

Organisers are expected to announce the full and final line-up — including its headliners — the week of 13 Oct. Do look out for more shows and pocket events throughout the month of November. For more information, check out urbanscapes.com.my.

It wasn’t long into Good Vibes Festival 2014 before the green patches of grass transformed into muddy marshes. Huddling into any stage or booth that had a roof on top of it, the venue was clear of people.

That wasn’t how it was at the beginning though. The festival had a promising start, with local highlighted talents like Narmi, Faiq& The Manja Mob, and Froya taking the stage. Unfortunately that joy was short lived when storm clouds hovered over Sepang Go-Kart Circuit and gave a solid downpour.

The rain dragged on for quite awhile, cancelling off some of the bands that were to perform. On top of that the main stages were out in the open air, along with the food stalls and other promotional booths. It was understandable that it would’ve been hazardous to keep the electrical equipment running in the rain. Some were ironically saying, “The organizers probably didn’t pay their bomoh enough” though evidently it wasn’t the organizers fault.

In hindsight of all the stages closing, those who gathered under the Heineken Star Club managed to make the best of the worst festival situations. It was an impressive two-tiered club style stage where most gathered under to stay sheltered. Kyoto Protocol closed their greaser style DJ set, followed by Indiego& Co cheering up the crowd by throwing over freebies and upbeat indie dance tunes. Needless to say, it wasn’t long before festivalgoers accepted their fate and embraced the rain, going acapella amidst the several power outages that happened throughout.

Fortunately enough, the heavy rain subsided to drizzles just in time for the first major international act, Banks, a nice kickoff after a string of cancellations that occurred. The mysterious yet graceful Jillian Banks gave an amazing live set, soothing everyone with her raspy soulful voice, banishing that melancholic feeling after the rain.

There was an hour wait prior to Empire Of The Sun’s appearance on stage. Setting up such a bombastic stage evidently wasn’t pleasant after a heavy downpour, but after hitting up the stage, we understood why. There were crazy stage theatrics, accompanied with futuristic humanoid bird things, lasers and psychedelic lighting. ‘Alive’ and ‘DNA’ really stood online casino out from the rest, being their first few commercial breakthrough hits, but true fans would appreciate old goodies like ‘Walking on a dream’ and ‘We are the people’. Nonetheless the crowd just kept going full on.

!!! (CHK CHKCHK) came up next, where lead singer Nic Offer got down and dirty along with the rest of the crowd during the set, with mud and all. Not long after, crowds gathered up for the best seats, awaiting Ellie Goulding’s set. Opening her set with ‘Figure 8’, everyone could see how far she has risen as an international pop star. Switching it up between old tracks and new, there wasn’t a shortage of energy that came out from her, particularly during a cover of ‘Tessellate’ by Alt-J. After professing that a special set was being played in Malaysia, her set went on an uproar from ‘Lights’ all the way to the last note of ‘Burn’.

Despite the unfortunate weather conditions, local act cancellations and minor technical glitches here and there during performances, Good Vibes festival 2014 ended up to be a real memorable experience, like Ellie Goulding mentioned during her set “I know it’s wet and stormy but I hope you bring good vibes”, Good Vibes definitely lived up to its good name.
