We have featured some of the latest punk acts for our weekly ‘The Next Big Thing’, but this one has been our most favourite by far. Give it up for, California X. Well, you might think ‘California’ is not a really rock-esque name for a rock band, but just like everyone says “don’t judge the book by its cover”. California X are four-piece of American dudes who have been emerging all of the gigs in Massachusetts, and now? They had put their feet to perform at Reading&Leeds Festival. The band who are formed in 2012 consist of Lemmy Gurtowsky, Dan Jones, Cole Lanier, and Zacky Brower. The formation of the band was firstly pioneered by Lemmy and Dan, their idea was to start a fun sludgy rock band, and then when Dan moved to Boston he met Cole, long story short, Zack completed the band as their second guitarist.

In 2012, the band launched their first EP, ‘Sucker/Mummy’. A year later, the band produced their self-titled debut album via Don Giovanni Records. Just a moment after they released their debut, they start gaining recognition by music magazines like NME Magazine or SPIN. SPIN Magazine lauded one of their songs, ‘Pond Rot’, as a beautiful sludge and said that the band are carving an impressive profile. Their latest song, ‘Spider X’, will constantly head your band from the very first time the riffs hit your ears. We also hail Zack cs for the very rich sound of grungy guitars which make their sound more radical.

Since the band are coming from the same field as Dinasour Jr. , the band have been compared with them, “ We’re all aware of it, but so are a lot of other bands around here. Lately, it seems like bands from Western Mass are being compared to Dinosaur Jr just because we live here. We all like that band but I don’t think it’s an influence for us. We don’t really have guitar solos. Time will tell. Time Marches On. Time tells all.” Said Dan to performancereviewed.com regarding the comparison between them and Dinasour Jr.

As one of the hottest newcomers, California X have grabbed our ears for garage punk music and definitely for a guitar music fan, maybe they sound far from perfection, but who knows they will knock your socks as their about to be louder than the loudest!
