Let’s count how many great rock duo from the states, the White Stripes and the Black Keys. Hmm, if both of them are mixed into another form of duo there will be Deap Vally. Deap Vally is an all-girl rock duo consist of Lindsey Troy (guitar & vocals) and Julie Edwards (drums) from the States that will highlight the list of rock guitar’s fans. By blasting sounds like the White Stripes (we heard you also said the Black Keys) and being raw on blues, Deap Vally surely have stolen the attention.

The history of how they were formed is not a usual things for how rock duos or bands were formed. They met over a crochet class. This is the time that you won’t say “Classic”. Julie was a teacher for this class and Lindsey was (definitely) the student. The pair then started sharing about their love in blues music and felt like having some mutual that should be channeled in music. They have been together for a year and a half. In July 2012, Deap Vally released their debut single, “Gonna Make My Own Money”, and their track “End Of The World” debuted on Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record In the World on BBC Radio 1. They recorded their debut album in Los Angeles with the producer Lars Stalfors (The Mars Volta) and the duo will release their debut LP,”Sistrionic”, on June 24th 2013. Deap Vally have shared a stage with common names like Thurston Moore, the Vaccines, Muse, and Iggy Pop.

Their bluesy rock n roll is influenced by Jack White, which also makes the girls want to work with him, however the girls assumed that he won’t like the way of how they dress. Speaking of sense of fashion, Deap Vally confirm that they are too empowered as women, when some people look at them, they immediately feel hostility and some are inspired by their looks. There was once an interesting moment that happened to them while performing at San Frasisco’s oldest bar and they were bullied by the crowd (who are mostly sixties) along their performance. One man even came to them and said “I got a piece of advice for you. Get a bass player” and then Lindsey gracefully replied “I got a piece of advice for you. Get a vagina”, Snap!. Deap Vally are not a typical of how girls in a rock music would act, like crashing things or cussing or smashing stuffs, they are not angry-pissed off women, but they are spirited. The girls said to metro.co.uk on their perspective of their identity “What we mean is that the feminism of the 1990s – the riot grrl movement – wasn’t real feminine or very fun,’ she says. ‘We want to have fun with it and play with our femininity and our sexuality while holding our own as great musicians. Our audiences are rock’n’roll audiences and they just wanna have a good time and get raucous. And that’s pretty universal.”

They are totally a duo that will pump every live concerts and huge music festivals, their music is flawless and rare. If you are a fan of the Black Keys, Led Zeppelin, Jack White, and the White Stripes, Deap Vally are the ones to watch.

It seems like forming a band with family has become a common thing. The Corrs, Kings Of Leon, Haim, and many more. The Bath based rock trio have included to the list. The Walter brothers, William, Timothy, and Ollie Walter came to a decision to form a band together after working in a band with different people. Their story is close to how Haim were formed(our The Next Big Thing’s last week), they found out that it’s easier to have some debate or thought-provoking session in producing music with their sibblings.

The brothers have been making music for about 8 years until 2011, then they started forming the Family Rain and collecting materials. The Family Rain’s idea is to mix up all of their influences like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and AC/DC. As a trio, they actually sound pretty heavy and rich, by bringing classic rock blues and a slice of hip/hop ,the Family Rain spark out their talent as one of the bands which will buzz 2013. Their track “Trust Me, I’m A Genius” is a show off of why they come with what people have labelled them, “It’s great to be considered as a buzz band this year and we’re looking forward to getting out there and showing people why we have that label …. There seems to be a lot of bands with a bigger hype around them than us, so we’re not feeling the pressure too much, as least not as much as others might be…” said William to musicradar.com. The latest single from the band titled “Carnival” will burst your feet to dancing to its fuzzy guitars, the song is pretty refreshing and raw yet modern with a texture of classic rock (and again a slice of hip/hop).

The Family Rain are currently working on their debut album (with a help from Jim Abiss) at Hansa Studio (it’s the same place where U2 produced the major part of their “Achtung Baby“), Berlin. Well, we are so looking forward to see how this year will shape the band into! And if you are a fan of Jack White , the White Stripes, or the Black Keys, the Family Rain should be on your pick for new artist to watch!
