Before Ema Watson tweeted about Electric Guest’s This Head I Hold, We have discovered about this Los Angeles based duo. Electric Guest consist of Asa Taccone (Vocals) and Matthew Compton (Drums), the band have filled slots in huge festivals like SXSW, Bonnaroo until the down under’s festival, Splendour In The Grass. To find out more about this happening duo, check out our interview with them, discussing about their music background to Asa’s dream to be a boxer.

You guys have a different music taste and music background. Asa grew up in listening to hip/hop and Matthew listened to indie rock. Does the different taste help you guys in creating music? Or it’s pretty much like one of the obstacles?

Matthew: I don’t think its an obstacle. Even though we grew up with different tastes we still agree on what works in music. I always love Asa’s idea cause they are sometimes different from what I would write.

Asa : It definitely helps I think. Matt is a beast of a musician but the best thing about him is that he isn’t a school musician and because he never went to school for it he doesn’t have boring preconceptions about what should or shouldn’t happen musically. No disrespect to schooled musicians-they’re a billion times better than I’ll ever be.

How was it working with Danger Mouse? Will you have him back for your next album (if you are planning to create one soon) ?

Matthew : I’d love to work with him again. I really enjoyed the procès and think Brian (Burton) is obscenely talented.

Asa : It was pretty amazing. He’s quite talented. And great looking. Smart too.

Once Electric Guest was told as mash-up version of Maroon 5 (which I found that it irritated Asa). Is it because of Maroon 5’s music that is not even close to what you guys are producing or it it JUST simply because of Maroon 5, or Adam Levine? Haha

Matthew : You mean that guy that judges people on that tv show with Christna Aguilera ? I’d rather we sound more like her.

Asa : Ha. Yeah, that is kind of obnoxious right? It’s just two totally different things. There’s almost no songs on our album about love or relationships or dancing. We just have different messages I guess.

And music reviewers predicted you guys will be the next big thing like Foster the People. What do you think about that?

Matthew : Notmuch….there’s too much hype with bands now. I’m excited that people are listening to our band but don’t look too depply into the hype. Just enjoy the muisc.

Asa : I don’t know. I try my hardest not to focus on whether it’s successful or not. Mostly because it stresses me out. I already have enough of a complex trying to live up to my father and brother’s careers

Where did you get an inspiration about “This Head I Hold”? That song was such a hit from Electric Guest! Any fear that people will only recognize you guys by that song only?

Asa : Yeah, it’s interesting having people mostly know us through one song. I think that’s just how it goes if you’r lucky enough to have a single that does alright. It’s weird though because we weren’t even going to include that song on the album. We thought it wasn’t representative of who we were for awhile but obviously I’m glad Dangermouse convinced us to leave it on.

What song from “Mondo” that you really like the most? And why?

Matthew Holes. Such a weird song.

Asa : I like “Awake” right now. I never listen to the album. In fact, I’ve never once listen to it from beginning to end. But because we’re going to do a video for it, I’ve been listening to it a bit more and enjoying it. It took about a week and a half to complete that song which is really really long. By the time we were finished with it I didn’t know if it was great or terrible. I like it because of the message and because it’s very colorful. A lot of oranges and yellows in that song.

What has been the most memorable or maybe interesting stuffs that happen to you when you are performing? Is it the one when you did Letterman?

Matthew : Maybe breaking my kick drum pedal on live national TV (david letterman). That was a nightmare that we seemed to cover up nicely.

Asa : Yeah, that was pretty crazy. I woke up with no voice and had to paid a private New York doctor like 600 dollars to get shots of steroids so my throat would relax and not swell. Then Matthew’s kick drum broke towards the end of the song.

Your album is pretty diverse. What’s actually the characteristic from Electric Guest that will make people “Oh! This must be them!” ? (beside the unique vocal of Asa)

Matthew :I think the choices that Asa makes with his drums and synth sounds. I think he has a unique talent of being very créative with his sonic choices.

ASA : I think the way that synthetic parts are mixed with real instrumentation might be a way to classify it. The drums ofter have a synthetic loop and then Matt plays over them which creates a unique sound.

Any new bands that you guys have been obsessing lately?

Matthew : not really, been too busy making music. I have been obsessing over Leonard Bernstein recently. I’m very much in love with the way he talked about music and would put so much émotion/thought into his conducting. Here’s an interview I’ve ben watching a lot.

Asa : Mac Demarco

If you guys were not doing music, what you guys pretty much would do for a living? Any dream that you would like to pursue?

Matthew : Not really, there’s so much that I’d like to do with music that I feel like I won’t have enough time for it all.

Asa : I would be a boxer.
