The Sky Cleared Up for Warpaint

On a rare rainless Friday night , February 17th 2017, the parking lot of Senayan was filled with excited Warpaint fans as the all girl band from LA took their stop in Jakarta. It was the band’s first time in Indonesia and the band’s only South East Asia stop for their ‘Heads Up’ tour. For years and years have been begging promoters to get Theresa Wayman, Emily Kokal, Jenny Lee Lindberg and Stella Mozgawa to the country, and that night, the people got what they wanted. Warpaint’s groovy and eclectic presents kept the crowds moving all night.

Troü, Diocreatua, and Kimokal acted as opening acts and opened the night. Although three opening acts sounded a bit too much for a headline gig, it worked out really well. We saw it as going to small music festival before the weekend. In the early afternoon, before the Friday night traffic occured, people had been arriving to the venue to check out the opening acts. Troü and Dio Creatura did a great job warming the crowds up with their pop rock vibe and Kimokal did the job of getting the crowds’ energy riled up just enough that they still want more. By the time Kimokal finished their set, the place was bustling with energy.

As the night progressed, and the sun had set completely, the venue was fully filled. It was clear that everyone had the same thing in mind, Warpaint. When the clock stroke 9, the crowds started to roar with excitement upon seeing the band took the stage. The set was kicked off in a mellow mood with ’Intro’ and ‘Keep It Healthy’ from their self titled album ‘Warpaint’.

They kept the ambience fairly relaxed and calm with songs like ‘Heads Up’, ‘Stall’, ‘Undertow’, and ‘No Way Out’. But Stella’s attractive drumming and Jenny’s intricate bass lines create a sound that is unmistakably Warpaint. Things got interesting when “Beetles” was on. The unpredictable tempo changes, Emily’s riff and Theresa’s voice were executed perfectly up on stage.

The energy started to rise up as they played some of their more upbeat numbers. ‘Whiteout’ from their recently released album ‘Headsup’ was a hit. Jenny’s baseline yet again played a big role in making this song a definite Warpaint song. Theresa’s guitar riff, Emily’s perfectly tuned voice falls perfectly into place. Emily’s groovy dance move particularly in that number needs to be recognize, they’re fantastic.

The night continued with some favorites from both their new album and previous ones. ‘Elephant’ and ‘Love Is to Die’ are some of the crowds favorite that night. But their new song, aptly called ‘New Songs’ got the biggest sing a long of the night. But the real winner that night was what come afterwards, ’Disco//Very’. This is the song where everyone in the band play an important role. We can’t help but to harmonize the words “I need to take a break!” together with the girls.

After they played ‘So Good’ and ‘Bees’ as their encore songs, the band bid us adieu.

We really enjoyed their set and although they didn’t squeeze in ‘Billie Holiday’ on their set, it was still a great set. Warpaint really knows how to mix up their set list and keeping people on their feet. Even without a backdrop, Warpaint managed to make it clear that it was in fact a Warpaint show.

Do You Make The Cut to be Warpaint’s Warrior?

You guys probably heard the news by now that Warpaint is finally coming to Jakarta on 17th of February 2017. We got IWireUpID to thank for bringing them in for their “Heads Up” world tour. The all-girl quartet released their forth album on September last year and have been busy promoting the album across the states and Canada. This year they are continuing their tour across Asia, Australia, and back to the USA. Gladly for us, Jakarta will be their first stop this year and we can rest assure that a lot of people is looking forward to it.

Other than being an all-girl band, Emily, Theresa, Jenny, and Stella have developed a certain attitude and persona that made a lot of their fans want to be in the band. But are you cut out to be the fifth member of Warpaint, not that they’re searching for it. If you have most of these criteria, then you are probably cut out to be in the band, or at least hang out with the band.

Adventurous

Two of the earliest member of Warpaint Theresa and Emily met when they were 11. Together they went on moving to New York together when they were 18, also travelled to south-east Asia, Europe and drove cross-country to live in Los Angeles and eventually forming Warpaint. Are you adventurous enough to take those journey with them?

Music enthusiast

Are you a music fan? Like, all kind of music? You need to have a broad knowledge of music of any kind if you wanna get with the band. After all they described their music as ghettotech, psychedelic, melodramatic, popular song. They find inspiration from different type of music. Their new song, aptly named, “New Song” was inspired by Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”, they’re a big fan of Rihanna, and “Dre” out of their new album had a trappy, hip-hop beats, sparse like A$AP Rocky.

Funny & silly

These gals have been together for over 10 years that they have developed inside jokes that we may not get but definitely evidence that they are funny. Exhibit A: how they described their music ghettotech, psychedelic, melodramatic, popular song? “Always a question mark at the end” said Emily once in an interview. Why the question mark? We never know.

Strong Personal Style

Other than having a strong sense of sound the ladies of Warpaint also got their own unique personal style. They all have quite the fashion sense. Wearing sometime punk-ish, hillbilly, bohemian, or even very girly outfit, they look cool anyway tbh. Also, out of the question, Emily and Jenny clearly not afraid of giving their hair some personality that match their own. Have you found your own version of pink hair?

Creative and spontaneous

Like any other artist creativity seemed to come naturally, but spontaneity is not everyone’s cup of tea. Well, the gals of Warpaint are definitely creative and spontaneous. Just look at how they created “New Song”. It was a challenge from their manager to create a song inspired by a new pop song, they picked Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and created a song on the spot. Wonder what kind of things they are spontaneous about.

You are busy, and that’s pretty much the reason you miss all of the updates about the albums which are released in 2014. In the past eleven months, we have been sitting in our HQ to listen and curate some of our favorite albums this year, each of us picked our best ones to give you some of SVANAPaper’s best picks in 2014. These albums should be in your i-Tunes player.

1. Chromeo – White Women

After more than 10 years in the business, this Canadian boogie-duo is still at it, with more grooves that will awaken your inner dancing queen and force you out on the dance floor featuring collaborations with Toro Y Moi, Solange Knowles and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig. The Toro Y Moi collaboration on”Come Alive”transporting them back to their electrofunk roots;the rippling guitar lines and pluckybass linesgiving way to a slick, multi-layered chorus.

2.FKA Twigs – LP1

Brit musician TahliahBernett hit it on the nail with her first full-length album, LP1. Being a shortlister for the Mercury Album Of The Year Award, FKA Twigs bring something fresh to her twist of Hip-Hop. The album highlights her growth that has been tended to since her first EP with “Water Me” and now is blossoming to something we’re all eager to listen to.

3.Interpol – El Pintor

After the disappointing release of their self-titled album in 2010, Interpol has showed us that they still have some capabilities under their belt with “El Pintor”, 39 minutes album which loaded with the songs that resembles the tracks from “Turn on The Bright Lights”, the album that leaped them into the big league. However, this album is still leaving the famous question, “Will Interpol ever topped Turn On The Bright Lights?”,hanging, Even though this album is not the legitimate answer, it is not a cheap take on that attempt but a nearly-there.

Recommended Track : Anywhere

4. Kasabian – 48:13

Kasabian are surely taking their latest album to the next level. With changing their musicality from the previous ones to have more electronic tunes. Eventhough 48:13 receives mixed reviews and debates regarding the changes of their style, we still praise Tom Cs’ effort to bring something new to the table. This may not their best work, but the album evolves their signature riffs to catchy synthesizers, and everything flows really well. All we can say is 48:13 adjusts with how modern a rock band can be, as we all know Kasabian have always been big with their status, and this predominantly electronic style, they might be starting for something bigger in the upcoming years.

5.Lana Del Rey – Ultraviolence

A whole package musicality is in here. Pretty persistence lyrics, hot and cold tension ambience of music. Not to exaggerate everything, but ‘Ultraviolence’ should be considered as today’s masterpiece of music albums. With Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys produced it, the songs are composed with a beautiful dark tunes and combined with a sad and seductive of Del Rey’s voice. ‘Ultraviolence’ definitely reflects a maturity version of Lana Del Rey and the album is strongly giving an elevated soul of romanticism.

6. Mac DeMarco – Salad Days

It’s hard to tell if Mac DeMarco is a merry prankster or a tortured soul, but either way, that ambivalence is one of DeMarco’s defining traits. Salad Days, his second full-length release, sees a richer and more assured refinement, as DeMarco becomes continues to grow in his slacker-rock ways. The laid-back melodies of his guitar creating a warm, watery groove that just begs for you to jump into. Layered with his quietly eloquent lyrics, Salad Days is as welcoming as a backyard hammock swaying in the wind.You’re unlikely to hear any other album this year with so many mentions of people’s mothers, but no one nails it like Mac does.

7. Mø – No Mythologies To Follow

Karen Marie Ørsted adheres perfectly to the ever growingscene of electro-pop songstresses Copenhagen is producing. Being an album dedicated to the perplexities of young adulthood, you can expect this long awaited album to be carefree and full of life – just like the eccentric musician herself.

Recommended track: Pilgrim

8.Royal Blood – Royal Blood

It was hard to believe that this band is only consists of two persons when we hear their single, “Little Monster”, on our HQ. Royal Blood has delivered something that we haven’t heard in ages. Rhythmic sounds composed beautifully with a melodic riff that came from a tweaked bass. Nobody would have thought of that at the first place. We could easily spot another monstrous and festival-approved riffs on “Come on Over”, “Careless”, and “Out of the Black”. We won’t be too surprised if they emerge as a festival headliner in the future.

9. SBTRKT – Wonder Where We Land

The second studio album from SBTRKT gives the same cool mood like what they give us in ‘SBTRKT’. ‘Wonder Where We Land’ highlights our favorites of SBTRKT’s music bass and R&B’s mixture of deep house. The album sounds very neat, moody yet very solid with help from quality vocals of Ezra Koenig, Raury, and Sampha. The core of ‘Wonder Where We Land’ gives a vision of chill ambience which once you dip your ears to the album, it swallows you to the deepest nuance of each well-structured tracks. Quoting from Paste Magazine, “This is an album about vision, movement and manifestation. It’s about removing oneself from the familiar to tap into the brain’s ability to create unprecedented and inspiring art. Success”.

10. Warpaint – Warpaint

Forget the Haim sisters or Lauren Mayberry from CHVRCHES. The girls from Warpaint were known as the most adorable girls of indie scene (take a look at Swim Deep’s references of Jenny Lee Lindberg on their hit single, “King City” for example). After setting off with their first album, “The Fool” in 2010, the girls from Los Angeles, California are back with their second self-titled album. This album has all the formula that catapulted them into the atmosphere. Layered guitar followed by Cocteau twins-esque vocals is a thing that we could still barely hear on this second album. However, they’re more daring to experiment on this second album. Even though there are several new and hip all-girl bands who are riding the stream, Warpaint will always remain as a titular queens of the 00s indie rock.

The Eccentric Howls of Warpaint

Having matured from their 2010 album ‘The Fools’, Warpaint is not to be associated with the typical “all-girl band” stereotype. They bring to the floor melancholic vibes infused with a drug-like haze, enticing the crowd with their dynamic sound. To add, the siren-like voices of lead Emily Kokal (Lead Vocalist) and Theresa Wayman (Back-up/Vocals) howls over the venue walls, well complimented by the bassline of Jenny Lee Lindberg (Bass) and Stella Mozgawa’s (Drums) beats. The rapport of the four is undeniably what makes their latest self-titled album something worth listening to.

They open their set with ‘Keep It Healthy’,a great start to build an essence of misty haze throughout the venue, transporting attendees to a mystical place. From silhouettes of Mozgawa and Lindberg flickering on the walls to bright flashing lights, the setting was perfect to fit what Warpaint had to offer. Taking a breather, Lindberg (evidently a fan favorite) introduces the next song “Hi”, highlighting her sternum-crushing bass line. It was a marvel at how tight they have their set together, switching from keyboards to synths, drums to drum pads and keeping their grip together with near to zero noticeable fumbles. Their mastery towards their music is something highly notable. ‘love Is to Die’ came up next, roaring life on stage with epileptic lights, the live version was simply beyond compare.

The level of intimacy from Warpaint isn’t something staged, it could only come from rigorous amounts of practice and training together, creating a special bond internally within the group. Also noting their natural quirkiness in between songs, it’s aweing at how they’re able to switch modes instantaneously to fit the ideal mood for a song. “Biggie” to “No Way Out” was an eye-closing, hip-swaying casino online experience, drowning the audience in their melodic yet haunting voices and “Billie Holiday” was a sit down romantic sing-along to the childlike and charming tune. A familiar tune followed after, something that wasn’t expected. A real professional rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ filled the room, accompanied by a sea of hums from any 90’s kid.A highlight hit from ‘The Fools’ came next,‘Drive’ and ‘Disco//Very’ naturally got the crowd to jump back on their feet dancing along to every beat.

Pulling out the oldest trick in the book, the girls announce that ‘Elephants’ would be their last song (though we all know that there WILL be an encore), “ending” their pre-encore set with a cliffhanger to come back on stage with a solo acoustic by Kokal singing ‘Baby’, a more feminine twist in contrast to their other tracks. Taking a minute to have a short conversation, the four-piece band seemed somewhat dazed. “Umm…so what do we do next?” said Mozgawa, providing a light chuckle. Closing the night with ‘Elephants’ was definitely the culmination of the night. This is where they let loose and huddle over the drums – jamming and doing what they do best as friends.

It was as though we managed to peer into Warpaints inner circle tonight. Feeling a sense of comfort as though they were practicing in a garage. It’s a rare sight to see a band so in tune with each other and that’s what made the show something memorable. (Photos : Faisal N)

Bet You Didn’t Know: Warpaint

Theresa Wayman, Emily Kokal, Jenny Lee Lindberg, and Stella Mozgawa are the members of an American Indie Rock outfit named Warpaint. Warpaint has just released their brand new self-titled album and now they’re going to rock Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, February 12th, 2014. Of course we’re at Svana Paper are going to provide you some mesmerizing facts that you may didn’t know yet about the band. Here are amusing facts about Warpaint:

1. The band has a special relationship with Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their vocalist, Emily Kokal used to date former Red Hot Chili Peppers’ guitarist, John Frusciante. Even John mixed Warpaint’s debut EP, “Exquisite Corpse” in 2008. RHCP’s current guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer used to fill drums for Warpaint.

2. Heath Ledger used to be a fan of this band back in their early days in Los Angeles.

3. Holywood actress, Shannyn Sossamon is an older sister of Jenny Lee Lindberg. She’s one of the founding member of Warpaint and used to fill drums during their early days.

4. Even though they were based in Los Angeles, their drummer, Stella Mozgawa is a native Australian.

5. Way before the appearance of cute indie pinups like Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHS and the Haim sisters, Jenny Lee Lindberg has been considered as the cutest indie pinup. Even Birmingham outfits, Swim Deep has cited her name on the lyrics of their hit, “King City”

6. Warpaint’s hit, “Billie Holiday” is an ode to late jazz singer, Billie Holiday and a hit from Mary Wells, “My Guy”.

7. Theresa Wayman is one of the cast from 2002 movie, The Rules of Attraction.

Warpaint are Ready to Strike Kuala Lumpur!

Soundscape Records is proud to present Los Angeles all-girl quartet, Warpaint, Live in Kuala Lumpur on 12th Feb at Bentley Music Auditorium.

Warpaint weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals and driving post punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy. Both live and on record, Warpaint sound like they’re channeling something truly otherworldly, and mystical.

The band recently announced the follow-up to their 2010 critically-acclaimed debut, The Fool. It’s self-titled, spans 12 tracks, is set to release on 20th January 2014 via Rough
Trade Records.

‘Warpaint’ was co-produced by Warpaint and Flood (PJ Harvey, Sigur Ros, New Order, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Foals), and mixed by Flood and Nigel Godrich

(Radiohead). The album was conceived after some writing and recording sessions that took place in The Joshua Tree late last year. Here the band was joined by visionary director Chris Cunningham who has partnered with them for many of the album visuals including the cover. He has spent the past two years filming and photographing the band as they made ‘Warpaint’.

The group will also contribute a cover of ‘The Chauffeur’ to a forthcoming Duran Duran tribute album released in aid of charity next year and will return to the region in February to promote the new record, starting at Laneway Festival in Australia, the four- piece will then perform in a few Asian cities, including Kuala Lumpur.

Warpaint is Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Theresa Wayman (vocals/guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums).
