Thursday, November 8th 2018, will always be known as the day Guns N’ Roses reunite Axl Rose and Slash and brought the biggest rock concert Gelora Bung Karno Stadium and Jakarta have ever seen with their “Not in this Lifetime” tour. Being the first stop of their Asia tour and with approximately 40 tons of equipment, we were promised a magnificent show and they truly delivered!

It was a gloomy Thursday night when we made our way to GBK only to find it was filled with black t-shirt, red headband wearing crowds, but that meant we were at the right place. The atmosphere of GBK totally changed 180 degrees since the last time we saw it. From being filled with sport enthusiast for Asian Games to being the Mecca of all Guns N’ Roses fans from all over the country. The red and white seats of the stadium and the grass was covered by a mass of Guns N’ Roses fans.

When the clock stroke 8, the light dimmed and a tank filled with wild zombies suddenly appeared, motioning that the show was about to start. We thought the zombies filled tank was just a quick intro, but it turned out to be a 20ish minute repetitive and animated opening act. But eventually the zombies got blown up and the real treat started!

Axl Rose, Slash and the rest of Guns N’ Roses took the stage and start the show with “It’s so Easy” out of their “Appetite for Destruction” record. The thundering opening number reward them with an equally monstrous cheers. GNR continued the show with some of their hits such as “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Rocket Queen” before taking their spin of Wing’s hit “Live and Let Die”. In fact, that was not the only cover they brought. They also took their spin on Misfit’s “Attitude”, Pink Floyd’s “Wish You were Here” and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun”.

The 3 hour show didn’t lack of energy from the beginning to end! Between Axl Rose high pitched voice and energetic stage performa, to Slash’s killing guitar solo and quite persona, the show was entertaining back to back. What’s even more entertaining was Axl Rose’s many outfit changes. Everytime he gave the stage to Slash for a smashing guitar solo, he always came back with a different shirt and hat. He even took out his iconic plaid shirt for a spin.

By 11 o’clock everyone was well invested in to the show. But when Slash hit the first note to the ICONIC “Sweet Child O’ Mine” riff, everyone officially lost it. It was such a classic song, beloved by everyone, hard fans or not. The show went on with another classic, “November Rain”. Such an appropriate song to be played on a rainy November in Jakarta. This song magically scare away the dark cloud that have been hanging out for far too long above the stadium.

The legendary band from the USA closed their first set with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and “Nightrain”. They came back for their final four songs including The Who’s “The Seeker” and close the whole show with “Paradise City”. People cheered and confetti exploded as we bid adieu to our hero.

Guns N’ Roses’ comeback was more that we expected. They put up a thundering and earth-shattering show for everyone who’s been longing for an Axl Rose and Slash reunion. Seeing all of Guns N’ Roses fans coming in from all over the country to this one stadium and just sing their hearts out, was heart warming and seeing how Guns N’ Roses’ songs still live on until now is such an experience on its own.

It was a rather gloomy Wednesday night when we made our way to Empirica, afraid we might get caught in a drizzle on our online ojek. We made it dry and a little wind burned, but we were stocked to finally arrived for our second Noisewhore show and to finally see Unknown Mortal Orchestra.  

The night started late, we got in to the brochure covered hallway way after 7 and the opening act, which we were equally excited for, Heal, played sometimes after 8. But it gave us an excuse to get our Jameson and ginger ale to get us ready for what’s to come. And we’re glad we prepared ourselves because Heals was a force to be reckoned with! The five piece band delivered an incredible performance! The energy they projected on to the crowds never dimmed for even a second, from the first strum of guitar to the last thank youse and goodbyes. Heals used their time slot wisely in packing as much of their songs in it while leave some room to improvise those many guitar solos. Songs like Monolove, Void, Wave, and  False Alarm, are some of the number they played. Save to say, we were all impressed and we have a feeling that we’re going to see a lot of them in future festivals in and out of the country.  

When the clock struck sometimes around 9:30, when everyone finally made their way to the very front of the stage, when everyone was flushed and warmed up while still recovering from Heals, the light started to dim once again. This time, the star of the night, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, took the front and center stage. The New Zealand band opened the show with “From the Sun”. It took no time at all for frontman and guitarist, Ruban Nielson, to get off the stage with his guitar and roam the floor. The crowds welcomed him with open arms and embraced him as if they were old friends on a long overdue reunion.

After an exciting opening and impromptu meet and greet, the band went on playing a cleverly mixed of their four albums. Their newest two records, tho, were celebrated the most. Four song from their fourth and latest album was played that night, including “Ministry of Alienation”, “American Guilt” and “Not in Love We’re Just High”.

As the night progressed, the atmosphere in the middle of the crowd changes progressed with it. It started chaotic and in such high energy, until “Necessary Evil” started to play. By then the situation started to calmed down as everyone was recovering from the unbelievably energetic opening numbers. But the situation only lasted until the few last songs. The energy upped as they played  “Not in Love We’re Just High” and it escalated as UMO closed their first set with “Multi-Love”.

After the usual cheered from the crowd, begging them to come back on to the stage. The guys of UMO granted the crowd’s wishes and stepped back to the stage playing the last three songs of the night. “Hunnybee” and “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone” were the sweet ending to this bitter sweet one hour show.

1. Having mother nature on our side.

The biggest flaw with LaLaLa Fest 2016 was apparently the longing rain, which was way out of crew’s hands. This year we have been blessed with good weather from the start. Arriving around 3 o’clock in the afternoon, we were greeted by a breath of fresh air, a shy ray of sunshine and the perfect rush of misty wind. Even though we had some worry that the rain will eventually come soon, it was a pretty dry and beautiful day. Well, we did have a good hour of rain, but not big and long enough to stop us from having a great time!

2. Orchid Forest at Cikole was transformed in to a forest out of a fairy tale.

The first time we arrived at the beautiful Orchid Forest in Cikole we were stunned by how pretty and magical the places was transformed. Tree houses, flickering yellow lights, neon sticks coming out of the ground, and not to mention the fog! Orchid Forest has truly transformed in to a magical forest we only see in fairy tales.

3. Finding place for dance and rave music in the middle of a forest festival.

At first we were skeptical whether dance, r&b, rave music will be appropriate for a music festival in the middle of a forest. But we were proven wrong! Acts like Dipha Barus, Blackbear, and Blonde felt right at home during their performances. It was definitely appropriate and people can actually party in the middle of a forest. Brava LaLaLa Fest for thinking outside the norms!

4. Tom Odell redefining the meaning of piano in a live performance.

We have been a fan of Tom Odell’s since the beginning, even just by listening to his records. We appreciate the fact that he put piano as the main focus and not to only play ballad songs. With that being said, his live performance was far from mellow! Backed up by his band mates, Toby on drum and Max on bass, they delivered a surprisingly hard core performance! Drum solo, chair throwing, and barricade climbing are just some things we wouldn’t expect from a Tom Odell gig, but glad we got anyway. Truly a class act!

5. Oh Wonder + LaLaLa Fest crowds = A Match Made in Heaven

We can’t tell stories about our LaLaLa Fest 2018 experience without talking about the headline, Oh Wonder. This duo from London town apparently already got a huge fanbase here in Indonesia. From the chit chats throughout the festival, there were a lot of people travel to Lembang just to see them. Well, it was definitely apparent!

As we were getting closer to Oh Wonder’s performance, the excitement was palpable, you could almost taste it. Starting the set with their exploding number, Livewire, Oh Wonder managed to get the crowds in to frenzy. And don’t get us started with what came after that! After Livewir, the duo played one of our favorite song, the calming Without You. Ah, that was such a bliss moment. Every songs catered with such perfection, combined with the unbelievable energy coming from the crowd just made everything even more special. Oh Wonder was destined to headline LaLaLa Fest.

Bandung is yet again getting the international recognition it deserves with LaLaLa Festival, the first ever International Forest Festival in Indonesia. Not only because its unique concept and location, being in the middle of Cikole Orchid Forest in Lembang, but also by bringing Oh Wonder and Tom Odell to Indonesia for the very first time this Saturday, 9 March 2018. We can already feel that LaLaLa Festival 2018 will earn you the bragging rights you wished for.

After taking a break in 2017, LaLaLa Fest is back for the second time this year. The biggest bragging right coming out of this festival. 1. Invest on an awesome raincoats!

We can’t deny the fact that mother nature can sometimes be unpredictable. There might not be a lot of rain for the last couple of weeks, but what if something upset the big mama and for reason it’s raining on the day? To get ready with nature’s mood swing, go buy yourself a great looking raincoats or ponchos to rock under the rain. Be it a yellow IT style coat or clear American Psycho vibe raincoats, just make sure you got them ready!

2. Ditch your expensive sneakers and grab an adorable pair of wellie boots

Like going to any other festivals, you might want to wear your finest, crispiest, dopest kicks, but you might forget that LaLaLa Fest is not like any other festivals. It’s the kind of festival where you can get closer to all earth’s five elements. The combination of those five elements might not be the best idea for your kicks. So, instead of having to clean and resurrect your favorite sneakers, settle for an adorable and comfortable pair of wellie boots. They’re stylish and comfortable and easy to clean and you can pretend like you’re at Glastonbury. Win, win, win.

3. Grab your coziest sweater for a night in the forest

LaLaLa Fest in a one full day music festival. That means, you’ll be at the Orchard Forest from day to late at night. Lembang is not known for its warm weather, it could get breezy at night and for people traveling from Jakarta, it might be too cold for us. Pack your coziest, quirkiest sweater and get cozy together with your mates or SO at night while cuddling during Oh Wonder’s set.

4. Leave your car and hop on the LaLaLa Fest shuttle bus!

Driving to and from festivals is one the major hustle that can’t be avoided. And don’t get us started with finding parking! It is almost impossible to go to a festival at later without getting stuck in a headache inducing traffic and having to wait for a long long time for a parking! Luckily for us, the team of LaLaLa Fest have it all figured out. The festival is providing shuttle bus service from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia to the venue for only 35k. So, park your car elsewhere and head to the festival worry-less.
Prepare your tummy for an array of good food

One of the best thing and our personal favorite thing about festivals other than the music, is undoubtedly the array of food. Last year, LaLaLa Fest has an amazing collection of food vendors that catered to all different taste. You got Indonesian food, American comfort food, Mexican food, Korean, Japanese, you name it, they had it! We expect nothing less from this year’s LaLaLa Fest and we’re pretty sure they won’t let us down. So prepare your tummy to endure on some amazing food. Don’t let them go to waste!

Create a kick-ass playlist!

A great playlist can take you far in order to get you warmed up for a festival. If you’re taking a road trip to Lembang with your mates from out of town then you definitely need a kick ass playlist for the road. Why not kill two birds with one stone? You can do a road trip and warm up at the same time. We suggest adding different musicians to the mix to keep things interesting. Adding Ben Howard, Sufjan Stevens, George Maple, Ta-Ku, and Paolo Nutini will  spice the playlist up but still sticking to the theme. 3. Out of the rain season *fingers crossed*
The last LaLaLa Fest was held in November just right in the middle of the rain season, that might be the reason why mother nature was not in the mood in giving us the sun. Well, lesson learned! The team decided to move the festival to March, a sunnier month. Fingers crossed tho, we hope mother nature will be all cried out by then.

4. Embracing music festival outside The Big Durian once more
What we really love about LaLaLa Fest is that they pick the unusual places like the Pine Forest and the Orchard Forst in Cikole, Lembang, Bandung. Although many will be traveling from the Big Durian, but it’s a refreshing thing to attend a festival outside Jakarta, not a lot of festival do that, especially big International festivals like LaLaLa Fest. So, kudos to the whole team for thinking outside the box, or should we say outside the spiky durian shells.

We’ve come to the main reason on why we absolutely can’t wait for this year’s Laneway Festival Singapore: the music! I mean, have you guys check out the line up?! They got the soulful Amy Shark, the heart-melting Father John Misty, the peachy Wolf Alice, rocking The War On Drugs and they even bring back the quirky Mac Demarco to the stage. Everything you want, Laneway Festival Singapore granted and take it a thousand times better!

After a year of hiatus, one of UK’s biggest band, Alt-J, came back with their third album, Relaxer. The trio has been on a world tour since the album dropped and it’s about time they made their way back to the South East Asia and for the first time to the city of Bangkok. Medium Rare Live managed to get the band to Bangkok on November the 27th 2017.  
Under the scorching heat of Bangkok’s sun, crowds have gathered round at the parking lot as early as 4 pm too eager to witness Alt-J’s Bangkok debut. The crowds and their chatters filled in the room as soon as they open the door just minutes after 8. The show had no opening act to warm up the crowds. But based on our experience, an Alt-J show needs no warming up. Although, it would be nice to check out some of Thailand’s local talents.

When the clock struck 9, the lads took their place on their first ever Bangkok show. An eruption of cheers immediately replace the chatters and all of the sudden it’s every man for himself. The show started slow with a perfectly executed “3WW” off their newest record, Relaxer. As people sang back the words “ I just want to love you in my own language”, we realize that Joe Newman has perfected the art of writing a modern love song. Another example of Alt-J’s perfection in creating a love song is “Every Other Freckle” which was brought to live perfectly at their Bangkok show. Joe had succeed in curating a highly sexual lyric with, weirdly, a touch of sweetness to it. Lyrics like “I’m gonna bed into you like a cat prance into a beanbag” combined with Thom’s attractive beats and Gus’ complimenting deep backing vocals really make that song whole.
Another crowd’s favorite, and also our’s, was “Deadcrush”. The fifth song on their fourth album has been fans’ favorite since the music video dropped. Everytime the chorus came in, everyone can’t help but sway their hips from left to right mimicking the subjects of the video. Clearly, the video made a big impact on how people consume this song. Other than playing some new stuff from their new record, they also played some Alt-J classics such as, “Something Good”, “Taro”, “Matilda”, “Left Hand Free”, and “Tessellate”. Another song they tried to bring back to life from the second record, which was “Hunger of the Pine”, which unfortunately didn’t quite made it till the end. Having missed some notes in the beginning, singer Joe tried to keep up with the beat but alas, in the ed he ended it with a laugh just as they were getting to the last half of the first verse. Maybe we’ll get lucky next time!  
Alt-J’s first every Bangkok show was a roller coaster ride. They created the best set list. Taking us on a ride only Alt-J can provide. They may not be the most energetic looking band out there compared to their peers, they don’t even move that much on stage. But despite all that, only Alt-J could give us a pretty content and calm performance, but still left everyone completely drained, both physically and emotionally.

When Bestival Bali was just announced some months ago we were ecstatic. Not just because an international festival in such caliber is finally coming to Indonesia, but also because of the line up, the concept and best of all, the location. At the majestic Garuda Wisnu Kencana, Bestival Bestival Bali made its debut with a bang. We came in not knowing what to expect, we came out thinking that Bestival Bali is exactly what we’ve been waiting for. Here are some of our favorite part of the festival. 1. Alt-J

It’s been a long time coming for this three piece band from the UK to make their Indonesia debut. Lucky for us it was Bestival Bali was their first stop. Alt-J’s unique sound that tick off basically every style of music makes them universally loved by everyone. The atmosphere in the crowd was through the star filled sky of Bali from start to finish. The band played some of their older pieces like Matilda, Fitzpleasure and the bagging Breezeblock, but we have to say their songs from their new record stole the show. Numbers like 3WW, In Clood Blood and especially Deadcrush really translated well in to their live set. Although they only performed for merely an hour, people were still having a good time.

2. A magical venue

Being in Bali, the land of Gods, we can’t think of a better venue that Bestival could choose  than Garuda Wisnu Kencana. Located far away from the busy Kuta, GWK was the perfect venue for this intimate festival. Imagine being surrounded by tall cliffs and glimmering lights. It does make you feel small, but in a good way. 3. An intimate festival

Festivals are known to be this huge thing that makes it harder for people to taking every thing in. Bestival Bali was a big festival that somehow felt intimate enough for everyone to get lost and absorbed everything there was to take. In every corner we could see people just becoming one with the festival. From sunset watching from the cliff, drinking a pint on the lawn, and dancing their night away in front of the stage, we could just tell that they all have the same reason. That was a very intimate night.

4. The Cuban Brother

The Cuban Brother, our new favorite brothers! Since Archie and Kengo came out with that festive floral suits, we knew we were in for a show, and we were right! A group of four grown up men rapping and break dancing all through their set with many crazy body con outfit changes was nothing like we’ve ever seen before. Their happy, radiant energy was contagious! Definitely a festival must have. 5. Crazy outfit parade

Festivals are the prefect place to put on something weird, wild and crazy. Clothes you don’t normally see in your daily life. But somehow people at Bestival Bali seemed to get the bar higher with their outfit. While at the beginning people seemed to be wearing their regular festival gear, as the sun goes down and the festival got crowder, things also took a turn for the best. People walked in wearing a full length sequin jumpsuit, an orange wig, crochet bikini top and a guy even stripped down his “day outfit” to don a speedo and shirt look.

6. A melting pot

Another advantages about Bestival in Bali is that this Land of God is a melting pot of travelers. People traveling in Bali from all around the world can be spotted at the festival. We have never been to a festival in the country where asking “Where were you traveling from?” to someone besides us was a necessary ice breaker. It truly felt like a proper international festival.

It’s true what they say, the world is a small place. Before Phoenix was even formed, Laurent Brancowitz, the guitarist, was in a band with future Daft Punk member, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. They were call Darlin’ based on the Beach Boys song. Funny story, a British magazine called Melody Maker labelled the band as a “daft punky trash”. Guess how Daft Punk got their name?

2. Charli XCX’s parents support

Just like most talented young artist, she started writing and producing her own music since she was 14. She started putting her own songs online before being approached by a music promoter that ran parties in East London and invited her to play at one of them. But being 16 and performing at an illegal warehouse in Hackney Wick got her parents worried. But instead of telling her to let it down, they instead went with her. Family support at its best!

3. The talented Lipa family

it seems that musical talent runs in the Lipa family. Before the British-Kosovar singer Dua Lipa started listening to singers like Nelly Furtado and Pink, she grew up listening to his father’s, Dukagjin Lipa, a Kosova Albanian rock singer.

Instead of being in an industry worshipping fame and glamour, the rapper known as Big Sean is a very spiritual person. He opened up about his meditation process before he records a song. He credits his mother for his interest in spiritual. His mother would give him books to read as a kid.

Education first was definitely the motto of Gerald Gillum, mostly known as G-Eazy. When the rapper toured with Drake during a break from his classes at Loyola University in New Orleans, he was forced to miss some dates to get back to a class. While granted permission by most of his teachers to go on tour, he sadly couldn’t got one from this particular teachers that’s going to fail him if miss another class. So instead of getting wild on the stage with Drake, he went silent in a room for a class.

We are coming to that time of the year again. By that we mean, it’s that time of the year for We The Fest! And this year WTF came back for not their usual 2 days but 3 days! If you’re like us, then you have been preparing for this day since the beginning of the year, because God forbids you’re going to miss this year WTF and break the tradition.

But really, you think you know how to survive #WTF2017? Or probably this is your first time for #WTF since you cried yourself out over not going the previous installments (especially when you saw those celebgram’s feed after last year wtf’s madness). Take a seat and notes, before storming on H&M and become crazy on your summer outfit plan, these are some declassified guidelines for you to survive on WTF.

1. Make sure you secure your 3 Day Pass!

You have to realize that We The Fest is one of the hottest festival in the country, and this year they’re going full force with a 3 day festival. A lot of people would want to go to all 3 days. So we recommend you getting the 3 Day Pass before you regret missing all the fun.

2. Get Pumped Up with Killer Playlist

Nothing prepare you for a festival than listening to a playlist to get you pumped up for WTF17! Head to Ismaya TV channel to check out their official We The Fest 2017 playlist. And what do you know, you might discover some new favorite music.

3. Set your own lineup beforehand

WTF is a big festival, meaning it’s going to have more than one stage distributed around JIExpo. Thing is about big festival, your favorite artists might not be performing on the same stage or, God forbid, performing at the same time on different stages. To get the most of the festival, make sure you check We The Fest and/or Ismaya Live social media for schedule updates. Create your own schedule of artists you want to see to make sure you don’t miss any of the fun.

4. Comfy First

While WTF is known to be the most fashionable festival in the country. Every year a lot of people came to the festival wearing well thought out outfit, and they just gets better every year. But the one important thing you have to remember is to wear something comfortable. There’s nothing wrong about getting creative about your outfit, but make sure they are comfortable. You’re going to be active, watching shows, and running around from one stage to the other stage, might as well be comfortable.

5. Get there early

We The Fest is that festival who has everything! Not just music, WTF has arts, games, food that will keep you well occupied and entertained. So before you devour the awesome line up, make sure you come in early to check out everything else. Plus, if you come early, you won’t miss any of the lineup.

6. Keep Hydrated and energized

WTF is an all day event, you’ll need all of your energy to get through the day. Don’t forget to keep your body hydrated and don’t forget to get yourself something to eat. Luckily for us We The Fest always has the best varieties of tenants selling delicious food. They got you cover!

7. Be In The Moment!

Hey man, imagine being at the festival singing your heart out to your favorite The Kooks tune, or boom clapping to Charli XCX, don’t let anything distract you from that moment. So forget about updating your social media for a while and just be in the moment.

At the 7th floor of Kuningan City, Music Gallery came back for the, well, 7th time. The annual music festival by FEB University of Indonesia has become a regular thing for most people. They are known for bringing top notch headliners and form a kick ass lineups. Well, this is year was no different. After their very successful 6th Music Gallery last year by inviting Last Dinosaurs to headline, this year they take it up a notch and got Honne to headline. The whole day was a bliss but we have 7 favorite Music Gallery moments:

Peonies cooking up something good

This Jakarta based band came on stage all wearing chef’s hats on their heads. It was appropriate and relevant since they were cooking up something special for the audience to munch on. For 30 minutes they succeed in getting people’s attention with their jangle-pop music and up beat songs.

Chill vibe

The vibe of the festival is the thing we love about Music Gallery every year. This is one the of chillest festival in town. Just hundreds of people gathered around in their own little bubble   at an indoor music festival high up on the 7th floor of a crowded mall on a weekend.

Polka Wars: Men in Black

The five piece band from Jakarta, all dressed in black played the Intimate stage at the parking lot turned in to a venue. Polka Wars have been on the rise since last year, it’s not a surprise that many people turned up to their set to chant “ Mokele-mbembe” together. Even though it got pretty hot in the parking lot, the band managed to fully commit and show the crowds how to have a good time.

Stunned by The Trees and the Wild 

The Tress and The Wild set was mystical and powerful to say the least. The very dark yet alluring setting was in sync with their folk, post rock music. Our favorite moment have to be their live version of “Empati Tamako”.  Charita Utami’s voice was stunning and the whole performance was unbelievably empowering.

Out of Body Performance by Stars and Rabbit

What can we say that haven’t been said before about this band? Stars and Rabbit live set was a whole other experience. It’s a “you have to be there to feel it” kind of situation. The energy Elda oozed was contagious. We could say that they are one of the highlight of the whole festival for us. A performance worth watching live.

Sweet Like Honne

The cherry to the delicious sundae that is the 7th Music Gallery, Honne. Never have we seen such enthusiastic crowds. Even far before the London duo took their place on the stage, the crowds have been chanting their name begging them to come up stage. When they did, they surprised themselves on how many people knew their songs. The surprised look James gave to their bassist says it all. Indeed the crowds sang back every words, “Warm on a Cold Night”, “Someone That Loves You”, “Treat You Right”, what have you, the crowds knew it all.

Crew Game on Point

Another thing we love about Music Gallery in general is the crew. If you’ve been to any of Music Gallery event then you’ll know what we’re talking about. They have the greatest crew in festivals. They handled everything very professional and fun at the same time. It’s evident when Honne was up and you can just see that every crew is a fan of Honne and that means that this festival is for them as much as it is for the crowds.

Music Gallery has once again proved their rights to be named as this country’s ‘biggest international indie music festival’. We look forward to the next Music Gallery!
