Saturday night is best spent with good music, to that we agree. Jakarta Biennale 2013..

Saturday night is best spent with good music, to that we agree. Jakarta Biennale 2013 offered Jakartans an option called “Hiburan Malam Minggu #2”: a night of music performances, art-craft bazaar, and gallery of art exhibition. By the time we came the event barely started so we wandered around checking out the artworks and souvenirs at the bazaar.

We hurried our way upstairs as we heard melodious brass instruments playing: Sentimental Moods was up. The rooftop was already filled with attendees, most have taken sitting down position. Too bad since the venue had been perfect for a dance floor and the music was so catchy. This Jakarta-based ska band pulled an all-out, lively performance to get us dancing. Everybody should have taken off their shoes and danced along, but it was a rather laid-back crowd. Still, Sentimental Moods has set the night to a good start. Up next was Racun Kota, and the tune changed drastically 180°. A techno guy with Macbook controlling the beat, a casual looking guy doing rap, and a shirtless guy with a bottle of Anggur Merah dominating the microphone with raging vocal, made some digital-absurd-noise-hardcore concept of music. The stage was set as provoking riot of which the audience seemed too startled to respond. Hightime Rebellion ended the rooftop session with their mixture of danceable pop-funk.

Downstairs in front of Salihara Theater, lines of people were already formed, waiting to get in. Most of today’s attendees were presumably WSATCC’s devotee. “No need to line-up now, if you already have the ticket you will get a seat,” said one of the organizer to the eager crowd, yet they were unmoved. Once everyone’s comfortable in their seats, the lamps dimmed and spotlights on. WSATCC warmed the stage with three songs back-to-back before greeting the audiences. What interesting was the interactive stage designs where lamps and properties were played to enhance the ambiance of the show. The glamorous disco ball lighting up the room somehow made it feel like the 80’s school dances, and if it were not a full seat theater maybe we could all finally move our feet and dance like Sari did.

Everything was great until “Lembe-Lembe” was pronounced as the last song on setlist, then the room went lightless. Almost too dark for a show, not even spotlights to the band. We thought it was another stage setup as we saw all the little bulbs behind them were taken away, but that was it until the end of the song. It felt like you were in a restaurant, still eating but the waiter had already cleaning up the table. Kind of a bummer.

After WSATCC, the white backdrop was pulled away, revealing a mystical set for Kelelawar Malam. As a horror-punk band, Kelelawar Malam has known for the theatrical-horror stage act; sometimes they even came with people dressing as Indonesia ghosts. Sadly we had to miss the last show of this “Hiburan Malam Minggu” event. This whole night was supposed to be a dance party with all this dance-able beat but perhaps it’s just not our thing here? If you like the beat you should dance to it, alright! Nevertheless, it has been an enjoyable night and we do hope there will be more of this in the upcoming year.

Street art has been taking a part as one of the urban arts in human’s culture.

To close a week of Indonesian street art showcase (1/12), the festival topped the event by putting some community’s bazaar and a grafitti workshop by CK Graffiti Forum. As the icing, edgy performers like Indobeatbox, Yacko, Jhonsound & Night Club, DJ Gantung, and Delay Tribe hopped in the cab to make the closing night into a merrier euphoria.

Street art is one of the art activities that took place in public spaces. Street art can present as ‘town’s artistic decoration’, but on the other hand can also be present as an alternative media to vocalize the aspirations of social, political and cultural.

In Indonesia, the movement of street art getting more significant and sporadic in the last decade, not only in the big cities, but also in small towns. Yet, this development does not accompanied by documentation and archiving activities of street art in various media, such as images, videos, audios, and any other adequate written records.

Based on the fact, Indonesian Street Art Database ( ISAD ) that have been mapped and identified street art artists in Indonesia, especially Java, both individual and community, took the initiative to organize ISAD Festival. This festival will exhibit the journey and development of street art in Indonesia through the documentations and archives that had been managed by ISAD networks in 12 cities in Indonesia.

Indonesian Street Art Database Festival 2013 will exhibit a variety of archival photographs, posters, clippings, videos and texts on the development of street art in some cities such as Aceh, Jakarta, Kendal, Kudus, Kuningan, Magelang, Medan, Pekalongan, Semarang, Solo, Tangerang and Wonosobo.

In addition to this series of archive exhibitions, ISAD Festival will also be accompanied with some fringe events; screening of Hiphopindo.net, video screening and discussion with INA Walls, Indonesian Street Art Awards, a special presentation from Tembok Bomber, bazaars by art communities, Graffiti workshops by CK Graffiti Forum, and also music performances by Yacko, Indobeatbox, Jhonsound & Night Club, Kojek, Racun Kota, Dangerdope, and much more.

If you are a fan of Rock / Punk / whatever rock bands like..

If you are a fan of Rock / Punk / whatever rock bands like The Who or Stooges are, you definitely need to check this Sydney’s very own Dead Farmers. Influenced by Comets On Fire, Lightning Bolt and The Minuteman, they quickly sold out their debut single ‘Violence’ and now touring around Asia promoting their music. So when we saw them playing here in Singapore, before heading to Jakarta, we knew they will gain much rock enthusiastic later on.

Dipping ourself in one of Other Sound’s cool gig, we were trying to figure out if the ‘Sing’ can roll not only in hipster-indie-music-scene but also some psychedelic garage music as well. And, based on the crowd that appeared at BluJaz, apparently they do! Although we came a bit late, the bar which located in one of the trendy bar in Arab Streets has already packed with Lovejets and Stellarium very own fans. And with cool rock and roll and blues pop-ish tunes, Lovejets succeed made the crowd tangled on the dance floor by their songs and fun interactions. And who knew that the band used to be an opener for Indonesian band Naif back home!

Another local act that played after was Stellarium, with their shoegaze music and experiences playing (even organizing shoegaze events) in Indonesian scene, this band has no doubt was one of the most wanted to see by the noise punk listeners that night.

So, that’s pretty much a cool way to spend your $15 at friday afternoon in Singapore. If you want to know other cool way to spend your evening in Singapore, how about checking another cool gig from Other Sounds, as the quirky Canadian multi-instrumentalist Mac DeMarco heading to Singapore before Malaysia and Australia early next month at Home Club – Singapore.

Raffles Institute of Higher Education (RIHE) Jakarta is the first campus that started to give color to Indonesia with Success by Design to its students. RIHE is committed to provide a qualified education through its network of institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. Now as it is nearly time for their Fashion Design students to accomplish Advanced Diploma, RIHE Jakarta provides a platform for their students to exhibit what they have learnt during their studies.

The atmosphere of KOI Restaurant and Gallery 3rd level was warm and intimate, like a private standing party where everyone knows everyone. Around 7 pm, the hosts stepped on the stage and began the event.

It takes two to tango, so is fashion sense and business sense. Both needs to be intertwined beautifully to dance among the industry. So while the Fashion Design students crafted their collection, the event was entirely organized by six students from Fashion Marketing and Management courses. They are Alexandra Roselyn, Kristel Halim, Michelle Othman, Stephanie Sekar, Indah Nugrahanny and Meitia Rizky.

After the opening band by Sounday and make-up tutorial by Clinique, the fashion show started. Inspired by the style multiplicity of Oxford Circus, the twelve Fashion Design students presented their ready-to-wear couture collection. There were various interpretation of the busy intersection of Oxford street and Regent Street in the West End of London; like Emily with her elegantly sexy collection from recycled denim, Lydia’s collection in a mixture of Majapahit Kingdom and China, or Jennifer Jean and her projection of a forest beautiful mess.

To create fashion collection and to held the show, we’d say that the tango was performed nicely.

As it is nearly time for Fashion Design students to accomplish their Advanced Diploma, it is an honor for Raffles Institute of Higher Education (RIHE) Jakarta to provide a platform where they can showcase their creations and reveal what they have learnt during their studies. Through an individual mini collection, this event also aims to show a preview of their whole collection.

Therefore, Fashion Marketing and Management students as the representative of RIHE Jakarta are in charge of introducing their creations to public, by holding this press event. Our mission is to give a chance for Fashion Design students to showcase their creations and Fashion Marketing and Management students to show their ability in holding a fashion event.

The theme of the fashion show is inspired by the style multiplicity of Oxford Circus, a busy intersection of Oxford Street and Regent Street in the West End of London. The RIHE Jakarta Press Event Pre-Graduation Fashion Show 2013 will showcase twelve Fashion Design students’
creations; exhibiting their ready-to-wear to couture collection. The Fashion Design students are from the class of 2013, as well as Fashion Marketing and Management students who are holding the event.

You might have been a fan of an art of painting. But how about 3D..

You might have been a fan of an art of painting. But how about 3D painting? For some people, or maybe you don’t feel familiar with it.
3D Painting or known as a trick art, it’s called trick art because this kind of painting can manipulate your visual. Trick art is using three elements in creating the illusions. Geometric Illusion is on the structure concept, physiological illusion is a process of a brain and eyes, and the least, psychologycal illusion tend in feelings and reason.

Trick art is actually not a very new thing, it was created in Japan in 1980. Later, a man from Yamagata, named Kenzu Kazumume started giving a fame of trick art internationally. By founding S.D Corporation in 1987, he wanted to re-ignite the era of Renaissance Italia’s studio to the more modern public. And now, because of his effort, all of the creation of trick art can be enjoyed in many museums in Japan.

With the aim to introduce trick art in Indonesia, PT. Trimitra Sukses Mandiri held a Trick Art Exhibition titled Trick Art Japan Exhibition. This exhibition was held for two months, started from 2 December 2012 until 3 February 2013. By showing 50 3D Paintings (which are exclusively brought from Japan), in a corporate of S.D Corporation.

The paintings were hand made by the S.D Corp’s artists on a wood as its media, not on a wallpaper and not even got computerize edited. The artists even checked the venue to make sure that it’s adequate for the paintings. Because every single detail, such as lighting or placement could give a huge different view of the 3D effect.

The exhibition was held at Grand Indonesia, and more than 17000 visitors have experienced the trick art. As Kenzu ideals said, “creating art into something that is approachable with the daily activities, make it easier and give a new interpretation to the public…”, That makes trick art becomes an edutainment media. The event organizer also expects that this event can attract some big communities in Indonesia, such as photography, cosplay, students, and also a fan of trick art. Beside of those reasons, this exhibition hopes in giving a good endorsement for Indonesians in developing the art of Trick Art to be more known in Indonesia.

For this Trick Art exhibition, it will charge you for IDR 50.000 on weekdays and IDR 75.000 on weekends (Adults’ price). IDR 35.000 on weekdays and IDR 50.000 on weekends (for students)
So, what are you waiting for! Come and let’s have cool experience of enjoyinh Trick Art painting in your own way!
