The night of celebration has finally over, LaLaLa Festival 2019 has come to an end. The festival met several obstacles throughout, but still made happen only by tremendous supports from everyone. LaLaLa Festival are very sorry to every little inconveniences during the event that happened due to unforeseen circumstances. If anything, it was their sole intention to make the best of natural forest beauty a festive ground suitable for everyone.

The event, held on 23 February 2019 in Orchid Forest, Lembang was indeed showcasing a beautiful forest in one magical night with nature, music, and mood assembly. With so many things to see there were, including beautiful installation of lights of tunnel, garden of light, and also camping ground during the night of wonder, crowd were indeed aesthetically pleased.
Exhibiting three stages, each meticulously filled with dynamic performances from both international and national line-ups, visitors were spread throughout LaLaLa Stage, Navajo Stage, and Ombre Stage. Honne, The Internet, and Crush were a few to catch the most attention in The LaLaLa Stage. Honne’s performance is exhilarating like always, full of spirit, and with so many crowd there were, they managed to make the best sing along ever with almost 15,000 people. Syd from The Internet was also having tremendous fun with the best crowd, and she did not forget to mention her love for Indonesian Traditional Herbal Medicine onstage, much for everyone’s cheers. In addition, Korean

superstar Crush brought a special performance by inviting the band Wanderlust on stage to captivate fans with a solid and charming appearance through his song such as “Beautiful Day”.
On the other side, Jeremy Passion was one of the highlight from Navajo Stage, especially once he’s performing his hit song Lemonade. As the night get late, Diskoria created their own massive crowd because they were just that great! The last but not least, one of the new talents, the Club Dangdut Racun was able to captivate the audience from Ombre Stage who performed Indonesian dangdut songs in modern tuch which was able to make the whole audience dance along to the music. Other performers were also very satisfying for visitors under orchid tree forests such as Joe Hertz, Astronomy, Pomo, Sheila On 7, Project Pop, Fourtwnty, Ardhito Pramono, and many more at LaLaLa Festival 2019.

The announcement of LaLaLa Festival 2019 has been the talk in town recently since its surprise announcement in the early October. The biggest international forest music festival of Indonesia is set to be held on 23 February 2019 in Orchid Forest Cikole, Lembang. The much-anticipated event is broadcasted to be even bigger and better this time.

LaLaLa Festival has always had its own charming way with music enthusiasts all over the country. This year, with star-studded list of performers that is confirmed in the phase one announcement: Years and Years, Crush, Joe Hertz, Jeremy Passion, and Astronomyy, the excitement is just so real. As if it’s not enough, we are made in awe with its second lineup announcement that bring world class performers, both Honne and The Internet home.

Honne, an electronic music duo formed in 2014 in Bow, London has always been fans’ favorite, with melodic yet lyrical hits such as Day One and Warm on a Cold Night. Meanwhile on the more psych leaning sound, The Internet, which was formed earlier back in 2011, has crowned themself as established Grammy nominated performers following 2015 record Ego Death.

The event will also bring us performances from Pomo (Canada), Alex TBH (Malaysia), and Gentle Bones (Singapore), all set to be there next February to celebrate the night altogether with endless list of national performers, such as Sheila On 7, Fourtwnty, Ardhito Pramono and many more to be added.

As some of the performers are going to perform for the first time in Southeast Asia and Indonesia, devoted fans from all over the countries have secured their tickets first thing first. The diverse layers of performers is set to blur lines between musical genres with feel good electronic groove, R&B and hip-hop Korean superstar, and ambience fillers all in one discovery night of wonder and culture.

The emotion is still so fresh and raw on our mind, but we are all set again to the newest adventure brought altogether next year by The Group at LaLaLa Festival 2019. Set to be held on 23 February 2019, the annual international forest music festival drops the real bomb with its first lineup announcement, that includes London’s Years & Years and South Korean soulful R&B singer, Crush .

The Group, as one of the most well known, strong music promoter that started their journey in Bandung has grown so much during the course of year. With upscale experiences of bringing power house international names such as Oh Wonder and Kodaline, The Group has aggressively secured those that been on the wish list on repeats. As if we can only expect even more excitement in the future.

Going forward to a bigger scale of festivity, LaLaLa Festival 2019 offers one stop celebration of music with more experiences and even bigger performers. Staying true to their calling, LaLaLa Festival 2019 will be held once again in Orchird Forest, Bandung, famed for its striking woodland and beautiful gazes.

Eka Pramudita, Project Manager of LaLaLa Festival 2019 shares some of the beans with much excitement. “There is something special about music and nature that keep us, that fuse within the self deep, craving for some more. An enchantment, our muse of sorts to. LaLaLa Festival and the nature calling is one conjunction that can’t stand by its own.”

To the statement, he further added, “We are staying and changing at the same time. It became bigger than what we thought it’d be. 2018 was massive; we knew it was not yet perfect, but we got to meet so many people along the way that shared the same spirit, and that’s just awesome. The event is always about fusing inward to discover outward, to explore music as it is, and we always love it that way. Yet, this year it’s gonna be bigger. I can’t tell you further without spilling too much about all the grand surprises we have, but I promise it’s worth the wait.”

With Years and Years and Crush  on board, we can only expect even more surprises to be later added on. This will mark the first time in Indonesia for both the famous British synth-pop band and Korean R&B star. While Years & Years have already hit the top of Billboard’s album chart with their biggest hit single “King”, Crush  has his own English album soon to be released after swiping up Korea & Asia.

Their performances, altogether with stars such as Jeremy Passion, Astronomyy, and Joe Hertz are definitely something to look forward to. Not to mention, Sheila On 7, Fourtwnty, and Ardhito Pramono will also be joining the stage as our most favorite local acts. The name Tulus has been quite a buzz this year. Starting with hit single “Sewindu” (Eight Years), the soul singer has just released his second album which also marked his steadier steps in the industry. We got a chance to have a short chitchat with him about bits and pieces of the album, “Gajah”.

Hi, Tulus! Your second album is finally out, how was that for you?
Hello! The process of making the album was not that long; it’s actually been done since last year. However, I had to postpone the launching due to concert and tour schedule. So it’s really been a great relieve it’s finally out. This second album is more personal for me, because here I share stories about my childhood, my family. I also try to explore more diverse topic such as holidays and spirit of creativity, whereas in the first album was almost solely about love. “Sepatu” (Shoes) was the first song that we worked on in “Gajah” (Elephant). As soon as it’s done, we published it digitally via iTunes and aired it on the radio. Because the span between first and second album was quite long, I would like to present “Sepatu” as a teaser for the second album. A hook to keep the enthusiasm. This second album also sounds more cheerful, maybe because that’s how I was feeling throughout that one year back.

What is Gajah, anyway?
The name Gajah has a very personal meaning to me. So here I would like to express my gratitude for all the appreciation and support I have received by letting them know who I am, who I was.

That’s a nice gesture. Afterall, you can only love better when you know better, am I right? Now about love, where do you mostly get your inspiration for your love songs? Is there any best timing to write?
Well, inspiration is always something that is hard to explain. It could came out of thin air. There is no exact best timing to write a song, but it’s usually way easier when I’m savoring the highs and lows of my emotion. The fastest song I created was “Tuan Nona Kesepian” (Lonely Mr. and Ms.), it only took 15 minutes! That was the kind of emotional moment I meant before.

About the song “Jangan Cintai Aku Apa Adanya” ( Don’t Love Me The Way I Am), could it also mean universally, like from fans to their favorite artist?
Well, it’s really up to the listener on how to interpretate the relationship, but I personally wrote it based on my own story. I was in a relationship where I was loved for whatever I do, without critics nor demand. At first it was nice and smooth but as we went on, I felt like we’re going nowhere. We didn’t make each other better. So I want to tell you all that: don’t just love someone the way he/she is. Critic and demand which intended for improvement are essential, so that we could move forward and be better.

How do you compose the music for the lyrics you’ve wrote, can you play any musical instruments?
Not really, the tunes in my head are more like mere intuition and I get help from my friends. I collaborated with most of the musicians from my first album in the music arrangement.

This is very cliche, but how do you define your music? Is there any particular idols you look up to?
I would call my music ecletic, because in the album you can find jazz, soul, rnb, pop, anything! Haha. It doesn’t really matter, though. I listen to a wide range of music, from Amy Winehouse to Mark Ronson. No particular idols, cause it’s too hard to decide!

Do you plan to have another solo concert like the one you had in Bandung last year?
Yes, I do have that plan. The most exciting part about solo concert is the energy I received. In a big concert with several line-ups, the attention was of course divided and unfocused. While in a solo concert, all the efforts and excitement of people who want to see me perform –like how you queue for tickets and come all the way to the venue, I can feel it. I’m feeling your affection, and it becomes my fuel to always give my best.

You really value your listener.
Indeed. I have this fanbase named TemanTulus which has just had their second anniversary, congratulations! I hope they will always have the energy to support me, because it means a lot. It really does. I can only give my best to show them how grateful I am. To put into an analogy, it’s like I am the CD and they are the CD player; I can’t play without them.

How are you going to spend the year 2014?
I am planning to make a music video, do concert tour throughout Indonesia, join music festival, and there are also plans about going across country to introduce my music. Maybe that’s that, not too much so I would still have the time to play! Haha.

Saturday, Feb 22 marked the newborn festival in Bandung presented by Fakultas Ekonomi dan Bisnis Universitas Padjajaran. Abbreviated from the title Padjajaran Music, Festival, and Culture, PASIFIC aimed to combine music festival and cultural awareness. The biggest temptation from this event came from the line-ups which consisted of several Indonesian most prominent artists. Up first was HiVi! While the weather might not be all sunshine when it started, HiVi! performance had successfully warmed up the drizzled afternoon. Dea and Ilham, the vocal duo, always eagerly inviting the crowd to sing along, such a signature gesture from HiVi! Of course it’s hard to refuse their catchy songs like Curi-Curi, Orang Ketiga, or Mata ke Hati. The quartet’s rendition of The Groove’s Khayalan was also a good throw for people who had just seen them for the first time.

Raindrops were still falling when Tulus stepped on stage. The pop jazz soloist who had just recently released his second album, “Gajah”, greeted the audience with his trademark greeting, “Halo, perkenalkan nama saya Tulus…” With some brief story-telling about each songs he’s about to perform, Tulus delivered Kisah Sebentar, Diorama, Sewindu, Teman Hidup, Jatuh Cinta, and few numbers from “Gajah” album: Sepatu and Bumerang. His baritone crooning never failed to melt ones heart. We just can tell, for most of the audience were girls looking smitten, singing along wholeheartedly.

After the first two performances, we were given down time to enjoy surroundings: trying out Bandung’s culinary from the food tenants, meeting friends, or lining-up for a toilet break. The venue was getting even more crowded by the evening as the rain finally had stopped. Filling your tummy may not be a problem; the food tenants varied from the good ol’ nasi goreng to the hipster-ish all kinds of tea. But in such a cold and damp weather, toilet is a necessity, which was kind of insufficient in number it might burst your bladder.

Around 4 pm we shifted to the main stage where Project Pop scheduled to perform. Dressed in red and white attire, the six of them energetically entertained the audience with their comedic bits. Sundanese jokes are well received; an advantage as a Bandung based group in their own hometown. Other than songs like Pacarku Superstar, Gara-Gara Kahitna, and Metal vs Dugem, they parodied a currently popular dangdut song, Kereta Malam. After all the fun, Ingatlah Hari Ini made a memorable closing.

Tulus and HiVi! had been a feast for the girls, now it’s time for the boys and their awaited garage-rock band lead by Rekti, The SIGIT! Too bad there was some technical problems with Rekti’s microphone for several songs including No Hook and Clove Dopper, quite a bummer. For the next performance, the crowd automatically switched; front rows were filled with girls who then went screaming for Afgan’s name. It goes wilder when Afgan finally showed up, being all charming when greeting the audience. Even if you don’t really listen to his songs, you might found yourselves mouthing the words as Afgan sings, because it’s just impossible not to recognize his hit singles like Sadis, Bawalah Cintaku, Jodoh Pasti Bertemu, and Bukan Cinta Biasa. Whenever he bow down closer to the audience, high pitch screams will fill the air. He is indeed a real charmer.

The hysterical screaming did not stop there, for the next perfomance was the most awaited band from Yogyakarta, Sheila on 7. Existing since 1996, most of the audience grew up with their songs since the year of “Sheila on 7″ self-titled album. They seemed to understand our expectation, so the song lists mostly included singles from their early years such as Seberapa Pantas, Saat Aku Lanjut Usia, and Pria Kesepian. Duta never sang alone as the crowd known every words and all singing loud. The best part, of course, was Melompat Lebih Tinggi. This single from OST 30 Hari Mencari Cinta shook the venue as the audience literally jumping higher in accordance to the lyrics.

It might be exhausting after all the jumping and singing, but NAIF was definitely not to be missed. Continuing our nostalgia to the 90’s, NAIF started off with Mobil Balap, Televisi, and Posesif. Then, David the vocalist allowed the audience to request the next songs. The requests fulfilled were Air dan Api, Karena Kamu Cuma Satu, Benci Untuk Mencinta, and the one with the longest title, Dia Adalah Pusaka Sejuta Umat Manusia Yang Ada di Seluruh Dunia. Before the show ended, David took off his clothes and threw it off, triggering more scream from the girls. “Thank you!” David said as he’s leaving the stage, with last strum and stomp from Jarwo the guitarist, Emil the bassist, and Pepeng the drummer. As for the final performance, we could finally chill down a bit with songs from Glenn Fredly. The festival ended romantically with songs like You’re My Everything and Malaikat Juga Tahu.

PASIFIC has compiled a fully-satisfying set of artists with generous setlists as well. They are really what made the ticket price worth it. If only the concept of music, festival, and culture had been more elaborated and implemented, it would have the chance to distinct itself from other festivals alike. There are still several rooms of improvement that need to be taken care of before it’s able to make its way as a festival to be remembered. We believe it’ll only get better from here!

Happy birthday, Bandung. The place where leave is always on delay, the place where searching becomes an activity, the place where stopping by turns into staying in. It is one of the best moments in life to see something changing gradually. Whether it is good or bad. You will always learn something new.

Refreshment perpetually goes into our mind. It should come into our ears and eyes too. For our ears, this is a new reference: Tetangga Pak Gesang. Catchy name for our eyes, isn’t it? Arum Tresnaningtyas Dayuputri (vocal, ukulele), Ari Mendrofa (vocal, guitar), and Meicy Sitorus (vocal, glockenspiel) impress us with joy and cheerful rhyme and melody.

The name comes from the famous Gesang, well you surely know him. Composer of Bengawan Solo and also known as Indonesian keroncong maestro. One of the band’s members happened to live at the same neighborhood with him. So, they decided to use it for their music name.

They are one of agent of change and they are from Bandung. Let’s hope that music will always grow into a good aspect in our life from anywhere. Live long and prosper, Bandung!

Hello guys, straight to our first question. Where did the name Jirapah come from?

Ken (K) : Hello, hello hello (imitating a phone gesture), actually the name Jirapah came from our dearest friend who used to call me “Jirapah” because of my height. Well, me and Mar loves the idea of using the name, so, that’s where the name “Jirapah” came from. Pretty simple, isn’t it?

Yup, it was pretty simple. So could you tell us more about how you guys met?

K : Oh okay, so, I met Mar a long time ago, we used to date each other for a very long time during our days in New York, and uhm, I met Jan right during my first gig back in Indonesia. Jan was hitting on me (laughing) and we found out that we shared a lot of things in common, such as our love of Hardcore music, Classic hip-hop and Japanese Noise bands. I’ve met Yudhis during one of my gigs at Treehouse, Kemang. Jan and Yudhis are playing in a same band, Vague, and at that time, Jan asked Yudhis to catch my performance. And Nico, He used to work as a graphic designer at Whiteboard Journal, same place where I work. At first, he was a roadie, and then we asked him to play bass. We’ve been playing together since then.

For Ken, what is the difference between being in a one-man band and a full formation like this one?

K: Actually, I’ve never played as a one-man band. Well, maybe once or twice back in New York. But yeah you could call me a one-man band when it comes to recording. But back in my NY days, Mar and some of our colleagues used to help me play on stage. So yeah, I love playing with other people, especially my friends. I think I’d never hire someone to play with me (laughing).

What is the difference between New York’s scene and Jakarta’s? Is there anything that Jakarta’s scene doesn’t have? (Being compared to NY one)

Well, because of cultural differences, we can’t say that Jakarta’s scene is not as good as New York ones. Every scene has its own signature. But there are some pros in the New York scene such as massive amount of venues and good infrastructure. But it doesn’t mean our local scene doesn’t have an adequate number of venues. Well, we can take Keuken Bandung as an example. They have transformed an empty warehouse to become a good place to play. Well, that is why we think our local scene is not inferior to a scene in New York.

Well, could you tell us a bit about the story behind one of your song, Alexander?

Um, back in New York, there’s this French guy named Jacques who was a frequent customer at the place where Mariati used to work. He used to be a famous actor back in his homeland. But he decided to throw it all away and start a life in New York. Despite the fact that he’s not young anymore, he decided to start everything from scratch again.  Personally, I think his story is a one hell of a good story to tell. So that’s why I wrote “Alexander”.

Since you’re in Bandung, What is your favorite Bandung-based band?

Okay, this is my last question. Is there any plans to release a physical album/EPs somewhere in the future?

Yeah, we have planned to release a physical album since a long time ago. But, right now all of us are in the condition where our life outside music is much important than our band. But still, there are some plans to drop a physical release of our album. If we ought to make a full-length album, It has to be a well prepared one. I’d rather have an album with a good concept from start to finish instead of a compilation of our songs that we’ve created. But yeah, there is a plan to release a 7-inch vinyl with our friend from Orange Cliff Records. So, wait for it, we hope we could drop it as soon as possible.

Okay Jirapah, thank you for coming to Bandung. I hope that you guys are enjoying Keuken Bandung as much as I do.

Yeah, we hope that we don’t have to encounter a technical difficulty tonight and we could entertain our friends in Bandung. And, our pals, Bergaz is also DJ-ing tonight. I hope you could catch him later on.

The band’s name was inspired from the famous neurologist Sigmund Freud. The band that consist of Haikal Azizi (vocal/guitar), Nurachman Andhika (guitar), Mirfak Prabowo (bass) and Pratama Kusuma Putra (drums) was actually have been making music since 2008. Even though they haven’t released an album but earlier this year they have released an EP called ‘Cerebro’. The EP includes of four songs, Cerebro, The Long Haul, Ring of Saturn, and Atom Heart Father. I can easily feel what kind of ambiance that they want to show us. As for me it is a psychedelic rock. The band who just got back from they micro tour to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are currently giving you a free download on their website. Or if you prefer the old school style you can get their 12” vinyl.

 Chino Moreno, Abe Cunningham, Stephen Carpenter, Sergio Vega and Frank Delgado went on stage at 7.45 PM with ‘Diamond Eyes’ and ‘Rocket Skates’, both of them are a single from their 2010 album, Diamond Eyes. Followed by a track from their classic, Around The Fur, ‘Be Quiet and Drive’. Chino Moreno wore a Joy Division t-shirt and pumped the crowd with his moves and high notes. ‘My Own Summer (Shove It)’, ‘Lhabia’, and ‘Knife Prty’ followed afterwards. Right in the middle of the set, Stephen’s guitar faced some technical difficulties, and then Chino started to rap along during the set. After some difficulties, they finally made it. They played ‘Digital Bath’ and ‘Elite’ before playing ‘Change’ as a tribute to the late Chi Cheng. They played ‘Bloody Cape’ before the encore break. Despite some of the technical difficulties, the smile on Chino Moreno’s price was priceless when he saw some tribute from the crowd to Deftones’ late bassist, Chi Cheng. And yes, he mentioned the mural that he saw a day before the gig.
