Urbanscapes, Malaysia’s creative arts festival, will celebrate its twelfth year with month-long activities that include satellite shows, a host of parties and pocket events throughout the month of November, before culminating in full-fledged festival on Dec 6 at the Horse Ranch, Resorts World Genting in the highlands, just north of the capital city.

Often known for its off-beat festival sites, Urbanscapes is the first to introduce a highland festival experience to the burgeoning Malaysian festival circuit. On Dec 6, Urbanscapes invites festival-goers to traverse the tree-lined driveway which opens up to the idyllic, sun-lit plains of the Horse Ranch, Resorts World Genting, where the average temperature is a comfortable, crisp 22°C. A vast array of accommodation and transportation options will be available to choose from.

Adrian Yap, founder of the festival said: “The team here at Urbanscapes has always taken pride in selecting unique venues. We believe the venue — in addition to the arts, music and culture — is an experience itself. We’ve worked very hard with our venue partner in securing a very special site that has never been used before for any event, let alone a festival. It’s 40-minutes away, but 10°C cooler.”

Since its inception, Urbanscapes has supported Malaysian grassroots movements, fueled homegrown entrepreneurs; and provided a platform that has launched the careers of many artists and musicians. At the festival, guests will have the opportunity to explore the country’s creative arts, culinary and cultural offerings; and enjoy a thrilling line-up of local, regional and international bands.

Organisers are expected to announce the full-line up — including its headliners — at a later date. Yap says in the interest to satiate Urbanscapes’ growing audience’s tastes in music, this year’s full line-up will whet all appetites. “As of today, we’re offering just a sneak peak into the line-up. There is much more to come as this would be Urbanscapes’ most diverse line-up to date.”

As of this release, organisers have confirmed Scottish synthpop band Chvrches (“Recover,” “Lies”), whose track “The Mother We Share” was featured in the opening video for the 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland this year, for an exclusive Urbanscapes Satellite Show at 7 pm, Nov 19 at KL Live.

At the Horse Ranch, Resorts World Genting, festival-goers can look forward to soak in the anthemic sounds of the Los Angeles-based indie rock band Local Natives (“Gorilla Manor”, “Heavy Feet”) that Pitchfork described as a “sort of West Coast ‘Grizzly Bear’ [the band]”.
