It’s crystal clear that coming to Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) has been one of the..

It’s crystal clear that coming to Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) has been one of the barometers of how cool you are… well, that’s according to some group of people. However, that is quite true, because last year we did a small research on our team during #DWP14, 18 out of 20 people agree if you are coming to such festival like DWP would increase your coolness level just in one snap. BUT, we spotted some confused tweets or some insecurities from the #DWP’s first-timers! So, the first question that would pop in their mind is “How to act at my first #DWP?”. Anyways, some people might say “What the hell!? I don’t need guidelines. I just need to party!“, yet it’s crucial and quite useful to understand how you should behave at your first #DWP.

1. Know the world

For starter, there are two kinds of ravers, or people who go to rave. Ravers who enjoy the nightlife then pump up the whole night and ravers who wish to spend their time dancing and having fun. The point is, avoid the labelling of ravers.

2. Adopt P.L.U.R

P.L.U.R stands for Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. By understanding and adopting this way of thinking, you would gain some respect for the fellow ravers and it would help you to blend with the crowd easily. Remember, if you don’t adopt P.L.U.R, people most likely would just shut you down then you probably would spend the night being a boring raver.

3. Avoid the drug myth

Keep in mind that you want to have fun, not drugs. Dish out some stories that tell you the best way to enjoy the party is by having a handful of drugs. Don’t you want to brag some stories about how great the #DWP in the next morning on your social media? Then you need to stay away from it.

4. Comfortable is the best brand

Know what we witnessed from previous #DWPs? Yes, people who dressed up with killer stilletos. We have come to think that women nowadays are super strong that they could stand still with those hurtful shoes. We understand that you want to have longer legs or stilletos boost your confidence. So, our take is ; wear shorts, they would make your legs look longer (YAY!). The point of wearing clothes that you feel comfortable is you can dance freely!

5. Listen first before going

It’s always good to atleast know the line-ups’ songs, 1 or 2 songs is okay, well, practically the trick of knowing some songs so you can be like “OMG, This is my jam!” or “Play ‘Lean On’ please!!!“, you know what we mean Ps : People would call you a poser by doing this, but what the hell with them.

6. Learn how to bust some moves

This is a so-not-important tip but quite important. People always say things like “Dance like no one is watching!” but again, people might be looking at you while you are dancing! So, it doesnt do any harm if you learn some dance tips. One or two moves is okay. The best thing is you just have to crack those frozen dancing feet then just follow the rhythm.

7. Mingle to the jingle

Ugh, don’t hate this one because of the rhyming line. Don’t ever be afraid to mingle with the fellow ravers. Rave party is one of the best mingling pool for you who are a fan of expanding the networking. What is best from mingling with others is you might be having new rave buddies in the future!

In case you, first timers of #DWP, has anything more to ask, you might need to send out the qs to @IsmayaLive. See you at the party!

This guideline is adapted from Wikihow’s guide

1. Scoot over Coachella

With a super fun twist, we were excited to see the giant mad clownchella stage returned this year. It’s official, we tag the clownchella as Indonesia’s #1 music festival icon!

2.The local hippie vibe Did you think the hippie outfits or those quirky headpieces weren’t made for our local personalities? Well, if you think so, think twice! We were in love with how amazing the locals pulled off their look in this festival!

3.Mingling Pool
The best thing about an edgy summer festival like WTF is it was a great place to bask in with the other live music enthusiasts even though you barely knew them before. FYI, our reporters got new 6 followers on Instagram after the mingling session. That’s quite impressive, right?

4. Kimbra settled it! Sealed! Enigmatic. Superb. We mouthed f-words multiple times during her performance because she was just awesomeballs. Period

5. Passion Pit’s fan who still enjoyed the fest
If you looked up on the twitter feed after the band’s cancellation on performing at the fest, some fans seemed utterly dissapointed with this news. However, we applauded the fans spirit for still keeping it cool through out the festival. Because who wouldn’t enjoy the fest!?

6.Food Vaganza It’s clear that the best way to get to the music fans’ heart is through their tummy (beside their ears). The fest brought a super fun twist by setting up Kokiku Stage. The stage was rocked by the best locals and international chefs from Masterchef Australia and Junior Masterchef Indonesia. Happy tummy, Happy people. Nice job Ismaya at ruining our diet!

7. It’s all about that bass
You know those music fans who act like “don’t go to the fest if you don’t know the bands”. Know what? Hell to those people. We saw so many cool live music enthusiasts who didn’t know the bands before yet they ended up becoming a huge fan of them!

8. Playground here, there, and everywhere Filling up the tummy? Checked. Cool line-ups? Checked. Bungee jumping? Checked! Just like last year, we enjoyed the playground area of this fest. It’s like an oasis for people like us (and maybe you as well) who always root for a big jump on the ground and scream happily, just like how you revive those childhood days!

9. Abrakadabra on set
Where in the world you could see a magic show while some cutting edge bands are performing with their edgy rhythms? Nowhere but at WTF. Like really!

10. Brightspot market invasion The Jakarta’s #1 market fair flagged their existence at WTF guys! You just couldn’t believe how bedazzled we were just by seeing two combinations of WTF and Brightspot Market. Ka-boom!

11. Your instagram has missed a great post
Everyone’s life is boring until they have stock photos of WTF to be posted on their Instagram. However, you, missed out the fest. We’re sorry but you can’t sit with us. #WTFArmy

12. Sunset party

It’s obvious, Jakarta’s landscape on that sunday afternoon was just beyond! Just to make it better, the ambiance from the bands really packed up how great our sunday afternoon was.

13. You missed it all. ALL.

The fest had the gimmicks, awesome bands, super vibes, coachella-esque crowd, in short what you can’t imagine at some local music festival. And, you decided to do some other things which we are sure it was not as fun as WTF. Save your schedule, mark the date, cause you can’t miss the festival two times in a row. FOR REAL.
A lot of people observe that their best is felt by them, and at their..

A lot of people observe that their best is felt by them, and at their top performance, if they are at a fat that is certain. For me personally, that “miracle” number is 115 lbs to 120 pounds. I realize that easily go over this weight, I begin to experience lethargic, “fatty”. Therefore imply that the idea we are all biologically fixed to fat a certain amount does work? Effectively, some clinical info and rational conclusions made by experts do indicate the fact we’ve a genetically and naturally established weight that people are likely to hold, and also this collection fat depends upon quite a few factors, numberone being traditional dad and mom – AKA genetics. Shear observation has established it, as their family unit members are and medical data that many people are about 65% likely to be while in the same weight selection. Is there anomolies to the fact? Of course, there often are, however itis a fairly great chance that the apple will not even close to the pine, weight unwise.

Where once people visited the temp organizations, they now join with websites like odesk and elance.

We each has what’s named a “set point” weight. In other words, it is a genetically motivated weight which our body attempts to preserve, whether it’s by dictating the hunger we’ve, or perhaps the foods we tend to crave, our anatomies are very good at managing our eating habits and our specific metabolisms to accomplish that set point. There have perhaps been studies of kids who are used, which may have demonstrated related outcomes considering that the adopted baby’s fat was more comparable to their biological parents than to their adoptive parents. the medical area speculates it that each and every one-of us is subject to this weight range, that is said to not be independent on fat cells one has by the end of their first year of life’s number. Needless to say, how much we eat, the fat content of our diet, the quantity of calories we ingest regularly and our degree of physical exercise all affect how large those fat cells will get, and therefore how “huge” we will be, but we do virtually start life down with this particular established amount of fat tissues. This could imply that perhaps the strictest individuals could have a moment losing weight that is very difficult if they are currently in their “set point” fat array, since any type of receptive weight loss will be consistently nasa researcher claims definitive college term papers proof life that is extraterrestrial combated by the body by decreasing down the metabolism. What this means could be the body metabolizes the meals more quickly, or more gradually, with respect to the set point purpose, whether it needs to rise to achieve the set point, or down of it’s. Truth be told, you will find an number of cases of obesity inside the United States, nowadays.

It should be card that is light.

Thus much to ensure that many Americans have gotten the risky “abdomen minimizing” surgery bypass, within an effort shed the fat, and to cheat character that nature won’t permit them too. Nonetheless an number of the individuals eat there means right round the surgery but still obtain the fat back. Obesity the Body Mass Directory, or BMI, which is really a dimension of excess fat that’s depending on the peak and weight of an inidvidual. Currently, based on BMI’s idea, over 60 percentage of Americans are overweight and therefore their wellness maybe at great danger, only from carrying fat that is a lot of and getting strain on their areas. Typically a BMI of 19 to 25 is definitely of what is considered a healthier fat an indicator. Whenever we look at this, how do a “set point” weight always’ idea be genuine? Could character ascertain a male or female must be morbidly obese, or is that this a perversion of a more genuine type of the set-point theory, that’s as a result of not enough nutrition education and increasingly bad diets as a result of not enough availability of nutritious foods to selected areas of the population?

Additionally request some little items or snacks for the successful crew.

Well, I am not enough of a researcher to take a position on that, but what I can let you know is that you can find simply too many advanced methods to slim down and maintain it off to allow for the uncontrolled levels of obesity that are currently common nowadays. What we ought to do is re-coach our anatomies to access a fresh “set-point”, and the reply to this isn’t training although gastric bypass, but diet guidance. As with the rest in this world, moderation and knowledge may be the key.

First thing first, before getting in to the main board on how exciting the night..

First thing first, before getting in to the main board on how exciting the night was (22/01), we were just utterly glad that something good finally landed in our country (after all those starvation of those rad music shows in Jakarta last year), all of the credits go to Mac DeMarco’s visit before making an appearance at Laneway Festival 2015 in Singapore.

The vibe that we got once we stepped into the venue, Level II at Foundry No.8, was just full of excitement that we have been drooling and wanting to experience more intimate live music concert in Jakarta. It was clear to say the not so big venue (reminded us to the Malaysia’s Upfront show at The Bee) gave a comfortable feeling to welcome one of the most eclectic performers. To underline how eclectic his performance is, he once performed U2’s ‘Beautiful Day’ naked on stage (yes, it’s on YouTube if you are trying to look it up) and in the interview that we had with him in 2013, he said that he’d been dreaming to drink donkey’s cum on stage if he has any chance to do so. To top everything, Mac DeMarco sounds much better when he’s doing live shows, which comes to a reason why we shouldn’t miss his concert.

The night was opened by Jirapah, the local band who stormed in an indie-rock music (and they happened to take part in Brooklyn’s music scene for a while) gave a humble set to poke the crowd a bit before seeing Mac. To us, Jirapah’s performance was definitely not a filler, their dynamic music was just a perfect way to open the night.

As Jirapah left the stage, the lights are slightly dimmed, and the sound crew went back and forth to make sure everything’s set. The small LED screen started showing Mac DeMarco’s banner alarming that the show was just seconds away to start! Opening with an ode to growing older and life soundtrack ‘Salad Days’, a hundreds of voice erupted singing along to its melodyc chorus. He continued his set with fans favorites such as ‘The Stars Keep On Calling My Name’, Blue Boy’, ‘Cooking Up Something Good’, and ‘Let Her Go’. Finding that Mac’s hadn’t smoked any but after five songs, we started thinking maybe he was subject to building’s protocol, but nope, he didn’t stop there, after asking some permission to one of the crews (who also didn’t give him the smoking pass), the crowd started raining Mac with a pack of cigarettes! Just like an invitation to lit his first cigarette on stage, he smoked one and paid an honor to his favorite thing in the world, performing ‘Ode To Viceroy’. As the night progressed, everything felt really amped up, especially after giving a moody nuance over ‘Still Together’, Mac interrupted the song with a venue-circumventing crowd surf, and gave a quick sign-off before the typical cheering for an encore session hit.

From swaying, mellowing out, laughing, and also not to mention the epic closure of Metallica’s Enter Sandman (or most likely translated into ‘Enter SandMac’) which changed the audience’s style from the urban youth to the king of mosh pit. Mac DeMarco’s charm of his loose music will never fail to win our attention. Just like what expected before, we saw Mac did his regular silly joke, demonstrated Elton John’s Candle In The Wind’ and also his crowd surfing. The way how Mac and his band put a show for the crowd wrapped the night into one word ; memorable. If you have seen Mac DeMarco’s live show before, the stage actions that we mentioned earlier might sound like something that has been done repetitively, however, when it was Mac and his friends who did them, everything didn’t seem like a cliché thing to do, and the most important thing, everything was just enjoyable.

Big thanks goes to PraSvana and STUDIORAMA for bringing Mac DeMarco to town!

Upon seeing the seemingly lacklustre line-up, we were honestly doubtful of how the event would turn out. But after reaching the Awana Horse Ranch and exploring the grounds, we have to say that their bold decision to move their focus from merely being a music festival and opening their doors towards a more broader scope of the arts has definitely paid off.

Entering the large grounds of the music festival felt like entering a world of it’s own, with every new area creating a new experience for the festival goer. One of our favourite spots being the North Bangsar stage, which acted so much more than just a stage, as it was in fact, a literal city of it’s own, equipped shops that mimic Bangsar: Malaysia’s popular “hipster” district. This city had everything, from an “UnCaring Pharmacy”, a “Maybebank”, a “One Door Cinema Club” and even a zoo (filled with invisible animals).

On a musical note, this years Urbanscapes line-up featured a large amount of home-grown acts, with the spotlight being on local math rock outfit, Dirgahayu, which can only be described as the Malaysian toe. This local act blew us away, because not only were they tight, but from watching them play, it was clear that they were enjoying the music as much as the crowd was too.

Even as the rain started to pour, nothing could dampen the spirits of the crowd as headliners Local Natives took the stage, starting off gently as they played the songs from their latest release, Hummingbird. Watching how in-sync they all were as they harmonised together was an experience of it’s own, as they sang their three-part harmonies so effortlessly that it seemed like they were just born to harmonise together. At the end of their set, Taylor Rice took a moment to mention how they previously agreed to stop touring for the album, but made an exception for Malaysia — an announcement that was met with cheers of appreciation from the crowd. But even with that, the crowd was still shouting for more, forcing the Local Natives to continue on with a drum-crashing, ear-drum bursting encore of “Sun Hands”.

Amongst the headliners, Aussie boys Jagwar Ma’s performance was probably the most hyped up of them all, as their extended outros got the whole crowd pumping in the Upfront tent as the crowd couldn’t help but to start crowd surfing as the grooves took over.

Donned in a show-stopping dress that can only be described as quintessentially Kimbra-esque, was the last headliner of the night, Kimbra. Who took command of the stage with her vocal prowess, but never failed to engage the crowd in a performance which was as personal as it was electrifying.

Beyond the tight acts, the main highlight of Urbanscapes 2014 had to be the Marketplace of Experiences, which preyed on our inner cheapskate with an array of free food, books, activities and a whole bunch of different experiences.

We have to confess that we spent an excessive amount of time at The Kitchen Table Restaurant and Bar’s booth; but who could’ve helped it! Their remodelling of our childhood delicacies into modern new forms teased our nostalgia and tickled our tastebuds, with our favourite being the adorable ice-kacang in a cone. And since they don’t serve this normally in their restaurant, this was a foodie moment that could only be experienced at Urbanscapes 2014!

Poking fun at the cliché of festival girls in floral headbands, they even had a booth equipped with freshly cut pastel coloured blooms and ferns, where you could make your own unique headbands. We have to admit that the booth did well in improving the quality of the usually tacky plastic headbands usually seen on the heads of festival attendees. Also, did we mention that it was free?!

Besides just being a great music festival, this year’s Urbanscapes was a festival of art and experiences, truly living up to their title of being Malaysia’s Premier Creative Art Festival.

Time seriously flies! It seemed like it was just yesterday that we compiled our annual Kaleidoscope. As the time goes by, we have gradually modified and trimmed some of the categories for our kaleidoscope. In 2012, we had ‘The Goodbyes’, which is pretty much a tribute from the late musicians who passed away in 2012. In 2013, we added new categories; best albums, best local albums and the comeback kids. 2014 surely has been a great year for us to review and scout and witness some of the great live acts, and also the great bands in the making. It’s clear, that most of our readers must have been very busy through out the year, which leads to the fact that you must have missed some of the music updates. Boo. But no worries, we have got it covered just for you in the 2014 Kaleidoscope.

This year, we have decided to bring three most prominent and anticipated categories : The Best Albums, Best Local Picks, and Best Newcomers. Here is how the categories go, The Best Albums covers our top 10 albums from our most favorite musicians, we also have reviews from Pitchfork, NME, and Rolling Stone as our references. We gathered the mixed reviews from each album and compile them in a solid list. For Best Local Picks, we present you ten most anticipated local albums which has become our favorite playlist in 2014. Last year, names like Raisa, Pandai Besi and Sore, made it to our list, and this year we have listed some of the best local talents to fill up your music encyclopedia. Lastly, Best Newcomers. This category definitely has become our most interesting ones to review. We have scouted and collected ten music babies whose musics are just mindblowing. Unlike what we had last year (in 2013, we took the list from our weekly column, The Next Big Thing), we looked to a wider scale to present you the hot-shot names.

Kimbra

This native New Zealander may be more familiar to the masses as the girl in the hit single: ’Somebody That I Used To Know’, but beyond that, Kimbra creates music that is a vivid arc of youthful exuberance and mature introspection, conveying an array of insights through her pop-funk beats.

Fun Fact: Wanting to run away from all the post-Grammy’s praise and criticism, Kimbra escaped to a sheep farm to write her latest release, The Golden Echo. In her words “The sheep don’t give a crap who you are. You spend time with them and there’s this beautiful kind of harmony of how everything works in that environment. It was a really great space to create.”

Local Natives

These Los Angeles-based group have come a long way from their days at the Gorilla Manor. Their newest album, Hummingbird’s solemn darkness is a far cry from the “battle-cry urgency” of Gorilla Manor‘s Sun Hands, perhaps acting as a window towards the changes they have gone through in the last few years following the departure of bassist Andy Hamm and the recent death of Kelcey Ayer’s mother.

Keeping their uniquely collaborative process intact, this band has matured from the comfort space of their established aesthetic and came out even stronger.

Fun Fact: Before each show, the boys of Local Natives psych themselves up before each show by listening to a specific song together. Every tour has a different theme song, from Prince to David Bowie, the list is as endless as it is random!

Jagwar Ma

Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield first met onstage at an FLRL stage performance of revolving musicians. With a mutual love of studio jams, home recordings, radio frequency manipulation, TR808 patterns, MPCs loops, vintage amps, and 7 inch vinyls — these two have found a soul amidst all that electricity. Creating music that slices human harmonies sliced apart by a dagger of sharp contemporary programming.

Fun Fact: They both come from mixed raced backgrounds! Gabriel’s dad is Persian and Jono’s dad is Chinese.

The Lemonheads

After their initial punk-influenced releases as an independent”college rock” band in the late 1980s, the Lemonheads’ popularity with a mass audience grew in 1992 with the major label album It’s a Shame about Ray,

Now, they’re back after an 8 year hiatus, with new releases that jumps from early British psychedelic to Dutch electronica, leaving you not know what is coming next but always wanting more.

Fun Fact: The Lemonheads line up has always been volatile, having more than a dozen different configurations over the last 28 years, with Evan Dando being the only constant.

Najwa

Malaysian born Najwa is back after a three year hiatus, playing with somber and minimalistic echoes over warm piano accompaniments. Thus the Aurora EP,stripping her sound down to it’s electronic core and revealing the deepest shadows of her soul.

Fun Fact: Najwa is the daughter of Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Muhyiddin Yassin

Kyoto Protocol

This five-piece outfit kick-started a renaissance of Rock & Roll in Malaysia. Since their humble beginnings playing covers in local bars in 2009, Kyoto Protocol have now played all around the world; even holding their own alongside Grammy nominees and YouTube record-breakers in Future Music Festival Asia 2013.

Fun Fact: Kyoto Protocol recently learnt some dance moves from all-girl Japanese pop-punk band Shonen Knife when they met on tour in India.

Faiq & The Manja Mob may not have any original material (yet), but get ready to be seduced by muscles, magic, multiple languages, and strange musical choices. Lead singer, Amanda’s gentle voice is reminiscent of old-school crooner, Doris Day. If Doris Day was Malaysian and cursed more, that is.

Fun Fact: Apart from their passion of writing and releasing original songs, the trio also enjoy covering current as well as older classic songs whilst adding their personal touch to it.

Dirgahayu

Dirgahayu first emerged in July 2013 as a 3-piece instrumental mathrock outfit. The band hit the scene with a single release Bahawasanya: 4 minutes of organised chaos, robust guitar attacks, and exuberant drum beats punctuated by intense abrupt transitions. With the recent addition of Seikan Sawaki on drums and Zulhezan back on guitar duty, expect their sound dynamics to turn more progressive, odd-signature compositions greeted with dense guitar riffs and a new foray of sound.

“If you could make a soundtrack of your life, what would the songs be?” We asked Jenny Rosander a.k.a Lydmor, the Dannish eclectic singer. She put songs from Trent Reznor, Dave Grohl, to the eye-popping Japanese popstar, Kyari Pamyu Pamyu. From seeing the songlist, we can easily conclude that Lydmor’s life is full of surprises with a colourful roller coaster in it. If you find similarity to your life, we guess these songs would match you really well.”

Singer and songwriter Jenny Rossander – aka Lydmor – creates music that transports your senses..

Singer and songwriter Jenny Rossander – aka Lydmor – creates music that transports your senses to an ethereal dimension; causing you to lose yourself to the rhythm of her melodic electro-pop tunes paired with an edge of darkness in it’s lyrics. As energetic and quirky in real life as she is on stage, we got to have a chat to this Danish queen of quirk before her first Asian show at the Bee.

We’ve heard about your involvement in the Danish Cultural Institute’s Flikrkus Project, could you tell us more about it? And how exactly would you properly pronounce Flikrkus in Danish?!

Hah! It’s actually pronounced as Fleekush.

It was about 4 years ago when the Danish Cultural Institute were having a jubilee to celebrate their 20 years anniversary. And they started this weird free project, where they rented a bunch of vans and campers and you could use the campers to do whatever you wanted, as long as it’s interactive.

So I basically packed up my whole studio into a van and recorded people. I wasn’t very good at it though. At that point, I just bought my studio and I was still getting a hang of everything, so I would make it ring in their eyes and mix it horribly. But it was a fun experience. And that’s also where I got my name! There was a girl with a flute that they used to call flute mother, so it was there that people started calling me sound mother, which is Lydmor in Danish.

So what’re you looking forward to the most on your Asian tour?

Well as this is my first time in Asia, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Asia itself and to experience the culture here. I’m also looking forward to see how people will interact with my shows. I mean the audience is definitely going to be different than in Europe. So it’ll be interesting!

You did a ‘trust tour’ last December where people could just hire you to play private shows, as long as they pay for your ticket to the gigs location. What inspired it?

I was bored! I forgot to tell my booker to book some shows and nothing was happening in my music at the time. So I didn’t have any shows to play or anything to do and I was so bored! So I thought, “fuck it! If I can’t play any shows in clubs, I’ll just play in peoples living rooms!”

On an impulse, I just posted a video on Youtube saying “hello, can I play in your living room?” and one week later I had 21 gigs in 4 different countries lined up.

It was incredible though. I played to everyone; from big student parties to a group of 3 teenage girls in a living room.

How was the experience playing to an audience of just 3 teenage girls?

It was so weird. I was sitting on one side of the sofa with my keyboard, and they were just sitting there watching me. It was hilarious as well though because they were in their early teens and wanting to look cool, so they would say things like “Oh we always party in downtown with these guys who are older than us.” I think they really wanted me to think they were cool. Hah!

What was your best and worst moment whilst on the trust tour?

The best would have to be in Holland, I spent like 5 hours just hanging out there after I played just talking to people and getting to know the students. It was so warm and everyone was so open!

As for the worst… It has to be when I was stuck in Hamburg central station without my phone. I’m a bit distraught and lose phones very often, and I lost mine then. There was this girl who was supposed to be picking me up, but she was caught in traffic and had no way of contacting me.

There I was, walking around central station awkwardly with my laptop open trying to find a hotspot, being snubbed by all these German people passing by. And when I finally found a hotspot, I needed to receive an SMS to activate it… But my phone was lost. That was such a bad moment.

I ended up having to go into this really seedy and dodgy net cafe to Facebook message her. I found her in the end though! So at least it ended well.

Would you do a trust tour again?

Yes! Since I started touring internationally my calendar is filling up very quickly, but as soon as I have time where I’m not doing anything, I know I’m going to do another one.

Would you come to Asia on our trust tour?

Definitely, but it’d definitely be very expensive for someone to buy me a plane ticket here. Unless it’s a really rich person I guess!

We’ve read that if you weren’t a musician, you’d want to be a movie producer; so what’s your favourite film?

Mary and Max!

Favourite producer?

Lars Von Trier, he’s very dark, but for something lighter, Emir Kusturica. He makes very special, weird movies.

In one of them, the soundtrack is some weird Balkan music with trumpets and tubas, and the whole time, the band is in the movie. So if the characters are in the car, the musicians would be running along side them, and there’s no explanation.

I guess the directors thought that it’d be so weird to have a soundtrack when the musicians aren’t in picture, so they’d just have them in picture all the time.

If we funded you to produce your own movie, what would your movie be about?

I’d want to make a movie about loneliness; it’s such a complicated feeling that everyone tries to hide. And no one wants to appear lonely. Especially now with social media, everyone thinks that “I have likes on Facebook. I’m not lonely.”

I’d like to make it an art film. Not with a lot of dialogue, but with lots of pictures and some nature shots here and there. Something very visual and surrealist. Loneliness in the context of social media.

Could you name us a few Danish bands the world needs to know about?

When Saints Go Machine, they’re so talented. It’s electro-pop synth heaven. And Helmet Compass, my boyfriend’s band. They’re a mixture of psych-rock and house music. Very 90’s.

Java Festival Production who successfully held prominent festivals like Java Jazz Festival, Java Rockin’ Land,..

Java Festival Production who successfully held prominent festivals like Java Jazz Festival, Java Rockin’ Land, and Java Soulnation, has launched its new breed, Java Soundsfair Festival. Java Soundsfair Festival is a hybrid music festival which combines music performances and cutting-edge art installations. The festival hosted performances from top notch names such as The Jacksons to Singapore’s up and comer, Weish. Just in case you missed the festival (you totally missed out), we have strung up some glimpse of what we experience in Java Soundsfair Festival’s debut.

1. It was actually fun to experience an all-indoor festival
Call us a coward or whatever, but when it comes to an air-conditioned room, we can’t help it. It turns out that Java Soundsfair Festival is the all indoor art and music festival in Indonesia. And we are sure, that many of you must be very happy for this all indoor concept, because you guys didn’t end up having sweat patch all over your shirts.

2. RAN’s stage act was such a joy to watch

We overheard some people decided to skip RAN’s show and some even said that they are boring. However, we decided to give it a go to see RAN. And those people who said that RAN is boring, well, it’s either they are the ones who are boring or they are the ones who are totally boring. Because from what we saw, RAN gave a simply nice set and they even had dancers who pumped up the excitement to singalong to their pop hits. We are a stan for RAN now.

3. Sophie Ellis-Bextor doesn’t age. The same thing goes to her music.

When we found out that the inhuman beauty, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, would be one of the line-ups, we knew we were not going to miss it. The first thing crossed our mind when she came out the stage is she doesn’t age. Okay, now we sound like a fan boy. Ms.Ellis-Bextor performed her infamous ‘Take Me Home’ and a groovy medley from Modjo’s ‘Lady’ to Moloko’s ‘Sing It Back’. Her performance was completed beautifully with her disco dance in an emerald sheer dress which gives a peek of her bedazzling underwear. Combo.

4. You should see Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra for once in your life

Yes, you should see Tokyo Ska Paradise for once in your life. All we can say is they did it in a f***ing legendary way in a serious classy act. We expected that their set would be mindblowing but when we finished seeing them, it was like you just finished seeing the Godfather banging their instruments. The point is if you missed their show, you missed out big time. (See how mindblowing their set was : here)

5. Magic weren’t rude

The canadian reggae fusion band were the headliners on the first day of the festival. Nasri, Mark Pellizzer, Alex Tanas, and Ben Spivak performed songs ‘Don’t Kill The Magic’, ‘No Evil’, ‘Let Your Hair Down’, ‘Paradise’. Then they closed the night with their world-wide known song, ‘Rude’, which invited the whole crowd (and we are sure 80% of the crowd know them from that song) to do a massive karaoke. FYI, the band were not surprisingly rude. Enough said.

6. There was no bad hair day

Well, if you went to the fest, we could assure you that there were no bad hair on that day! At the Assembly Hall 2 (it’s where some cool paintings and art installations were put), they even had this pop-up barber shop where you can get a seriously cool hair cut. Getting dandy comes in handy.

7. So many good things to capture, included the art installations

If you are a fan of art and cool paintings or whatever that sounds artsy, you must be very glad with the art installations at the fest. Just FYI, the art installations were curated by some of the cities’ best curators.

8. Cody Simpson shook his hips like Elvis

It turns out that Cody Simpson (who happens being a bestie of Justin Biebs) could pull of Elvis’ on stage. Before Cody Simpson hit the stage, we saw a bunch of teenagers has already lined up infront of the gate just to make sure they can secure a great view to witness him, or maybe his dapper look. Well, what we can say is, Cody Simpson’s show was cool enough. Might be even better than Justin’s.

9. Hail to the line-ups at Demajor’s Merak Stage

We just can’t even (insert a dramatical GIF) at the performers at Demajor’s Merak Stage. From day one to day three, we were pleased!

8. It takes two to tango, but Poolside might need three to make us dance

We love the daytime disco sounds of Poolside, we always dance to their blissed-out and bass-grooving songs. However, that night their set felt a tad bit blant and that was just it. Maybe that was just us, but we will always put them in our disco daytime playlist!

10. Coldplay karaoke session with Yamaha Special Project

This is definitely one of the best highlights from Java Soundsfair Festival 2014. Yamaha Special Project brought some great vocalists (and also the current guitar maestro, Jubing) to perform some of Coldplay’s notable hits. From Payung Teduh’s Is to Sandhy Sandoro, they all succeeded the crowd to experience a local sensation of tribute to Coldplay.

11. Scouted talented up and comers at Soundsfair’s lobby

Soundsfair’s Lobby stage was definitely the easiest stage to see since it’s located right after the entrance gate. The cool thing is it felt like the live-music enthusiasts were welcomed by some of the best new bands once they entered the hall. From Singapore’s Weish to the latest MERAH Music from Jakarta (interesting fact : right after MERAH Music performed, a synth band from China RED was scheduled to play next. MERAH is RED in bahasa Indonesia, in case you are wondering why this is interesting)

12. Roosevelt fed the depressing indie music fans to dance

As how they describe their music “dance music for people who are too depressed to dance. It was really good to finally have some great indie bands to come to Jakarta after a long hiatus from Indonesian promoters for not making indie bands’ concerts. Cheers to the amazing time circa 2010 – 2012.

13. The Walking Dead was brought into the fest
There were not only art installations at the festival, but also Zombies! We thought someone was hammered after walking frantically, but we realized it was still pretty early to get boozed. When we got closer, they were zombies. A fan of the Walking Dead should be making a parade if they saw this!

13. Yuna was undeniably lovely

“Jakarta~” Yuna melodically greeted the crowd who’ve been waiting for her at the plenary hall. With her looking pretty in her turban and flowing dress, Yuna performed her hits such as ‘Falling’, ‘Gadis Semasa’, and also her Pharrell-produced chart topper song ‘Live Your Life’. Yuna also showed off her ukulele playing skill, and once again, it was a great rendition accompanied by her smooth as silk vocals. Oh, what do Indonesians and Yuna have in common? A fan of Indonesian Meatballs, BAKSO. Hell Yeah.

14. Tulus gave an “elephant size” of a sweet performance

Do you guys remember the long lines at Java Jazz Festival when Tulus was about to perform? Yes, that happened again when Tulus became the festival closer at the Plenary main stage. It was easy to say that Tulus successfully made the love birds to singalong to his romantic songs such as ‘Jangan Cintai Aku Apa Adanya’, ‘Sewindu’, and ‘1000 Tahun Lamanya’.

15. With extra sugar and extra salt, Cibo Matto were solid

The New York-based band were just totally solid. With their high musicality, the crowd were swayed with songs like ‘Sci-fi Wasabi’, ‘Birthday Cake’, and even their rad bossa cover of ‘Águas de Março’. Evethough the hall was quite empty, Yuka and Miho managed to blast their ambient music to make the numerous crowd to dance. (Shout out to the front liners crowd, included to the Indonesian designer, Kleting.)

16. Long live the King, long live The Jacksons

The Jacksons are definitely the king of all the line-ups from the festival. Looking like a total legend, they showed up dramatically and walked through the gunsmoke in a bad ass style to open their show. They performed an effortless yet sublime show with songs like ‘Can You Feel It’ and the all-time dance favorite ‘Blame It On The Boogie’. Eventhough one of the jacksons had departed, The remaining brothers still remain being a supreme group. That night was filled with the soundtracks most of everyone’s lives, and we all know they have become wiser with age, they were still able to give a dynamic and amazing fresh moves like it was their first time to perform. It was a priceless experience for us to finally be able seeing the legends live.

17. We need a round two of Java Soundsfair Festival

You heard it, once is never enough. Let’s have another round of Java Soundsfair Festival because we need more festival experience. Cheers to Java Festival Production and the whole team for the event!

Since Good Vibes Festival 2014 in Kuala Lumpur is coming to your way this weekend,..

Since Good Vibes Festival 2014 in Kuala Lumpur is coming to your way this weekend, we ask Kuala Lumpur’s eclectic fashion blogger, Hanie Hidayah, to get the best suggestions about to best outfit to survive at the festival and some unnoticeable stuffs which are quite important to bring!

What To Wear:

1. Cotton cut-off tank top or tee
The first thing that you need to make sure is the fabric of your clothes, since Kuala Lumpur is known for its sunny tropical weather, a lightweight fabric would give you a comfort to spend a whole day at the fest. It’s airy and light.

2. Dark denim shorts
You can not go wrong with this woven kind of fabric. They’re tough and it is meant to get dirty, you can sit on anywhere you want without worrying anything. So it would be a breeze. And for boys, a chinos or cutoff denims would be just great.

3. A small cross-body bag or backpack
It’s important for you to bring a bag/backpack so you don’t have to put the whole world in your pocket. Make sure it’s a small sized to allow dancing (you don’t want to smack people around you while you’re swinging your swag right?) and it’s enough to fit your essentials inside like mobile phone, identity card, cash etc.

4. Hi-cut sneakers / running sneakers
We know some girls nowadays are a clone of IronMan, but really, the whole crowd knows how painful your day would be and your feet would be blanketed by blisters. So, Hanie suggested to wear hi-cut sneakers / running sneakers. They are strong enough to wear. They protect your feet really well and allow you to be on your feet for hours.

5. Tons of colorful bangles (girls) and Hats (boys)
For girls, it’s summer and it’s the time to get colorful! Tons of colorful bangles would give a chic touch to your look. However, pay attention to your selection of bangles, because some people end up looking like Dhalsim from ‘Street Fighter’. And for boys, hats are the best thing to accessorize! You can wear fedoras, bowlers, or caps. The good thing about wearing a cap is it can keep the sun out of your eyes.

Useful Things To Bring :

1. Resealable sandwich bags
When it rains, you just don’t have any control on what is going to get wet and what’s not. But wait, you can use Hanie Hidayah’s hack to protect her valuable inside her bag by using a resealable sandwhich bags. Just put them in and zip it. No more soaked items!

2. Colorful rubber bands
Hanie does not only use it to tie her hair when it gets hot. Rubber bands are also useful to keep things together in case of emergencies.

3. Back up shoes
She always brings either her Havaianas flip flops or opts for the foldable flat shoes. So when it rains, the canvas shoes will not get wet.

4. Luggage tags
Luggage tags are useful to keep her i.d, card and cash if she wants to go hands free. You can hang them on the belt ring of your pants, or you can slide them into your pocket. It works sort of like a wallet chain.
