It’s true what they say, the world is a small place. Before Phoenix was even formed, Laurent Brancowitz, the guitarist, was in a band with future Daft Punk member, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. They were call Darlin’ based on the Beach Boys song. Funny story, a British magazine called Melody Maker labelled the band as a “daft punky trash”. Guess how Daft Punk got their name?

Just like most talented young artist, she started writing and producing her own music since she was 14. She started putting her own songs online before being approached by a music promoter that ran parties in East London and invited her to play at one of them. But being 16 and performing at an illegal warehouse in Hackney Wick got her parents worried. But instead of telling her to let it down, they instead went with her. Family support at its best!

3. The talented Lipa family

it seems that musical talent runs in the Lipa family. Before the British-Kosovar singer Dua Lipa started listening to singers like Nelly Furtado and Pink, she grew up listening to his father’s, Dukagjin Lipa, a Kosova Albanian rock singer.

Instead of being in an industry worshipping fame and glamour, the rapper known as Big Sean is a very spiritual person. He opened up about his meditation process before he records a song. He credits his mother for his interest in spiritual. His mother would give him books to read as a kid.

Education first was definitely the motto of Gerald Gillum, mostly known as G-Eazy. When the rapper toured with Drake during a break from his classes at Loyola University in New Orleans, he was forced to miss some dates to get back to a class. While granted permission by most of his teachers to go on tour, he sadly couldn’t got one from this particular teachers that’s going to fail him if miss another class. So instead of getting wild on the stage with Drake, he went silent in a room for a class.

Fresh from the Coachella stage, the brothers duo, Disclosure is making their way back to Jakarta playing a much larger venue than their first time in the city headlining DGTL LVE. Also, they are back with their new Grammy nominated album, ‘Caracal’ which came out in September 2015. Throughout their career, they have produced hits after hits like ‘Omen’ and ‘Magnet’ from their new album and also everyone’s favorite ‘Latch’ out of their first album, another Grammy nominated, ‘Settle’. It’s not a surprise that they become the first artist that goes in mind when talking about the EDM scene.

1. They grew up in Reigate, Surrey

You might think the next future EDM it duo would come from the dynamic London or even the wild Essex. But this brothers grew up in the quite town of Reigate, Surrey in the U.K. They both attended Reigate College where they eventually learned about music and music technology.

2. Their parents inspired them to be in the music industry

Their musical talent is not without the inspiration of their parents. Guy and Howard grew up in a very musical household. Their mother act as a session singer, touring to hotels and cruise ships and their father being in a rock band touring around Canada and The U.K. They definitely have picked up a thing or two about the music industry from their parents. That’s why they know that they wanted to make music. The older bro, Guy, started playing drum at the age of three, while Howard learned to play the bass when he was six. What a talented family!

3. They grew up listening to a bunch of music that is not dance music

Growing up they listened to an array type of music. While they have a pretty similar taste in music, they also have their own favorites. Guy is a massive J Dilla and DJ Premier, the whole American hip hop scene. While Howard listened to Classical music at school and then grew up listening to Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson, and The Police. Their massive collection of music showed in the way they make their own music.

4. Collaborating in the school way

Even though they are young and live in the digital days, they still do their work traditionally. As you may know, Disclosure worked with a lot of other singers, writing and singing on their albums. On working with other artist, they both said on some interviews that they have to meet up with the person to keep the soul of the music making process in place.

5. Contribution for other artist

As if they weren’t busy enough, the lads still manage to have time to help and work on the works of other musician’s. As Disclosure the helped produce Sam Smith’s James Bond theme ‘Writing’s On the Wall’ and Mary J. Blige’s ‘Right Now’. But, both of them also have separate projects with different artist outside Disclosure. Guy, who is a massive fan of American hip – hop, produced for some hip – hop artist. Howard helped co-writing Sam Smith ’s ‘Make It To Me’.

Now you know more about Disclosure, it’s safe to say that they coming back to Jakarta is a treat for all of us! When DGTL LVE was announced, we let everyone around us know how much joy the news brought to our day!

Your favourite English singer-songwriter, Elena Jane Goulding or known as Ellie Goulding will be headlining Ismaya Live’s upcoming summer festival “We The Fest 2014”. Before heading to the festival, we have compiled some fun facts about her.

1. Ellie is a country girl, born and raised in Herefordshire.

2. Before learning how to play guitar at the age of 14, she began playing clarinet at 9.

3. She discovered her love for electronic music back when she was a student at University of Kent.

4. She loves history. In an interview with US Weekly, she said that she has a deep fascination for the history related to World War I and World War II.

Well, everyone knows that Sean and Lachlan are brothers. Or that they’re half Japanese — so here are some lesser known facts about them that every fan needs to know about the Last Dinosaurs to up their fangirl/fanboy game.

1. The name ‘Last Dinosaurs’ came from a song by Japanese band, The Pillows which Dan Koyama used to be into during his high school days.

2. Their Japanese influence continues, with their signature style of happy melodies and melancholic lyrics being inspired by scores and stories by Japanese animator, Hayao Miyazaki that carries the same vibe.

3. Dan’s favourite dinosaur is the brachiosaurus because it looks like it would be the friendliest dinosaur.

4. They recorded In a Million Years in a remote farmhouse in New South Wales, where they spent their time jamming, cooking, and shooting stuff (don’t worry, they didn’t shoot anything living)

5. Speaking of shooting, the song Andy was born out of the adrenalin rush Sean got when he was using one of the rifles on the farm.

6. The song Time and Place was written as an indirect apology to scientist Nikola Tesla, who in his time was shrugged off as crazy, but his ideas have actually ended up paving the way for technology we use today.

7. The muse for virtually all of their lyrics was Sean’s ex-girlfriend, whom he met as a high school student while at a gig for another Brisbane band, Expatriate.

8. After spending 2 months touring Asia in late 2013, Sean returned to his home only to find his prized Rickenbacker 330 guitar stolen. He likens the experience to be like losing a child, as it was the first guitar he bought by himself and the one he composes on. So if you ever come across a black Rickenbacker, with the initials “R. Y. U” scratched into the back, give Sean a holler!

9. Lachlan was escaping from the grasps of an overtly creepy fangirl when he drunkenly ran into the edge of a door, resulting on the scar above his right eyebrow.

10. Sean (who now plays the rhythm guitar) used to be the bassist for Australian band Cairos with BC Deusa, current drummer of the Dune Rats. Being good friends, he even played bass for Dune Rats multiple times when they needed one for their live performances

There’s nothing more fun than finding out ten hidden interesting facts of your favourite band. For now, we’ve got ten interesting facts of Mew that you should know. With a help from Indonesian Frengers, we are ready to give them all to you!

1. Mew consist of three members, Jonas Bjerre (lead vocals), Bo Madsen (guitar), and Silas Utke Graae Jørgensen (drums) after their bassist, Johan Wohlert, decided to depart from the band in 2006. For their live performances, the band have Doctor Nick Watts (keyboardist) and Bastian Juel (bassist).

2. On October 26th 2013 will be Mew’s fourth time of performing in Indonesia after having their previous shows in Bali (2003), Jakarta (2009), Surabaya (2010).

3. Jonas Bjerre (lead vocals) is so keen to see the gamelan show in Indonesia and the most interesting is…. he wants to try riding Jakarta’s TransJakarta!

4. Bo Madsen (guitar) once worked as a Germany teacher for a couple of months.

5. Silas Utke Graae Jørgensen (drums) has been fully inspired by African music, which can be heard in his rhythm (in album “And The Glass Handed Kities”) eventhough you won’t find the African music clearly. But it’s there.

6. In song “Apocalypso”, there is “Nolan” in its lyrics. Nolan is actually Jonas Bjerre’s dentist. The story is he had to wait for a while for his dentist to come, because of that, he wrote “in Nolan time..”

7. Lyrics “No Shadow Kick” are written in “broken cantonese” language, That’s why the band are not going to be able to perform the live version in its own studio version.

8. Mew will be making their debut as the final judge of “Covering Sounds”. Covering Sounds is the Indonesian Frengers’ competition of doing a cover work of Mew’songs. The finalists’ cover work can be heard on indonesianfrengers.com

9. Mew just released their music application, “Sensory Spaces”, and published their official announcement in several languages, including Indonesian. The application is designed by a french designer, Kevin Hammon.

10. Been thinking to give some gift to Mew? Do it! Mew are known as a gift-keeper from their fans! As they still have the gifts from Indonesian Frengers, such as the handmade flag of Indonesian Frengers, “Eggs Are Funny” face mask, t-shirt, event flyers, and etc.

You all know our hobbies, we like to dig up some facts of the cool bands. For this one, we got the Indonesian fan base of One Republic to list out the 10 most interesting facts about the band! These facts are not the ones that you can surf and find easily on the internet, that’s why you need to read it and you might need to take some notes (in case you’re really into the facts)!

 1. When Ryan Tedder visited Osaka, he got some Japanese characters and their sun tattooed on his forearm which translates into English as “God gives & God takes”.

 2. Brent Kutzle has a cameo appearance in the 2008 film, The Eye, starring Jessica Alba. He appeared in the opening scene playing cello as a member of the orchestra. He can also be heard playing cello on the title track, “Songs Like Rain” for the 2006’s independent film of the same name.

3. Zach Filkins guest-starred as a park ranger in the hit crime series Criminal Minds, Season 7 episode “Epilogue”.

4. Ryan Tedder has an independent career as a songwriter and a music producer for more than 20 famous musicians. One of them are Maroon 5, Adele, Beyoncé or even the boy band phenomenon, One Direction.

5. Did you realize that most of One Republic’s songs contain handclaps, the booming drums, and orchestra?

 6. The band was originally known as ‘Republic’, and then they added ‘One’ before the original name.

 7. Some of Tedder’s all-time favorite songs are “Wonderwall” by Oasis, “Freedom” by George Michael and “Mysterious Ways” by U2.

8. Japanese Cherry Blossoms is Zach’s most favourite spring tree!

9. Zach Filkins can speak Spanish fluently! Because he lived in Castelldeffel for an octade! FYI, Castelldeffel is a province in Barcelona. So, if you have a chance to meet him in person, you can greet him with some spanish words.

10. One Republic made their Indonesian debut in 2008 by performing for Jak Jam and they will be back to perform at Guinness Arthur’s Day at Oct 26, 2013. Let’s join the celebration!

 1.      For three years, Linkin Park was constantly rejected by numerous major labels; they were even rejected three times by Warner Bros. Records. After performing 40 different showcases for different labels, Warner Bros. Records finally signed them up in 1999. Little did they know that the band would bring immense success and a worldwide sale of 60 million albums.

 2.      Music-wise, the band went through a lot of hard work to create amongst one of the best-selling albums in a decade. They wrote 80 different songs to accomplish the 13-tracks platinum-certified album, Meteora.  The band engineered another 100-150 songs to create the album Minutes to Midnight.

 3.      Besides their diamond-certified music career, Linkin Park has a heart of gold when it comes to charities and social awareness. Music for Relief is a charity founded by the members of the band, designed to provide help for disaster victims. Involved in the Indian Ocean, Haiti and Tohoku earthquake, Hurricane Katrina, Sandy and Rita, California wildfires and other natural disasters, the charity has raised almost $4 million in total, by donating 100% of the funds through benefit concerts, song compilations and on-going support campaigns.

 4.      The members of the band each have their own musical influences and inspirations. Some of them include Depeche Mode, The Beatles, U2, Metallica, Youth Infatuation, Anthrax, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Bjork, N.W.A., Public Enemy and a lot more.

 5.      The band started out with the name of Xero, with the formation of Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon and Brad Delson. The post-high school band then later searched for a vocalist, who later became a great asset to the band, Chester Bennington. The band renamed again into Hybrid Theory. The final rename of the band was Lincoln Park, but due to internet domain issues, the band settled with the name Linkin Park.

 6.      Despite their undisputed success, the band faced many bitter moments during the seventeen years of their career and restless gigs. From bottling, controversies with religious groups, unfriendly signs and crowds, being spit on, and even being thrown with ordure, yikes!

 7.       Linkin Park is known not only for their music’s maturity, the band is also never afraid to experiment with new materials. The first two studio albums, Hybrid Theory and Meteora, interpreted their definition of nu-metal and a hybrid of rap and rock. Minutes to Midnight revealed a more alternative side of the band, the shift of genre invited various reactions from critics. The next album, A Thousand Suns, an album with a strong social message along with a layered cutting-edge electronica influence, is followed by their latest release, Living Things, in which the sound was described as ‘familiar territory’ and a fusion of previous experiments.

 8.      Breaking the Habit was a hard song to perform for Chester, due to the intense emotional connection he could relate with. Crawling was next, because of its long note throughout the song.

 9.      Brad Delson almost gave up the band over law school, after graduating with a summa cum laude from UCLA with a degree in communication studies. He is admitted to be the heart of the band, and the very reason that Linkin Park doesn’t ‘get lost in the shuffle of rap-metal bands.’

 10.  Most of the members have had a strong arts and music background. Rob started playing the piano, but fell in love with drums in the 4^th grade. Mike studied classical piano for a decade, but shifted to jazz then hiphop. Brad’s first instrument was the trumpet. Joe started deejay-ing in high school, studied illustration in college and pursued film-making. Phoenix does not only play bass, he was taught guitar by his Mom and even played the violin. Chester started singing at young age, and dreamt of being the fifth member of Depeche Mode.

 2.Their brand new album, “Koi No Yokan” has received mixed reviews around the world. With a majority of good props from major rock media, such as Revolver Magazine who gave this album an award for album of the year. “Koi No Yokan”’s single, “Swerve City” topped some of the rock around the world.

 3.Chino Moreno said that after Chi’s death, he had an intention to release their unfinished album with Chi, “Eros”. So they could play some materials from their unfinished album live! Who knows about that? Chino is an unpredictable guy and he loves to bring much surprise to his fan. Such as covering The Smiths and Duran Duran, who plays a pretty different music compared to Deftones.

 4.Bandung is known for their underground movement. Watching an iconic band with fellow gig-goer is a blissful joy. Singing to Minerva with a fellow gig-goer must be a joyful experience.

 5.The ticket price is cheap! For comparison, the ticket price for Deftones’s previous gig in Indonesia was around IDR 450-550k. And now it’s only 350k. It’s pretty cheap, right?

 6.The late Deftones’ bassist, Chi Cheng, has a song with his own name. That is ‘Chi’ from KoRN.

 7.Did you know that ‘Around the Fur’ video has never been released until today? Yes, the video which was directed by Stef Carpenter back in 1998, contained nudity and drug scenes.

 8.Still from ‘Around the Fur’. Its album cover features a woman whom people thought she was a Celeste, Chino’s wife. But, it’s wrong. The truth is the girl who featured on the cover is Lisa, a freelance model.

 9.Before Chi Cheng jumped the band as the bass player, there was another man who filled the slot. The first bass player was Dominic Garcia (Dom). Dom was a friend of Abe.

1.Wye Oak is a duo, composed of Andy Stack (drums, keyboards, backup vocals) and Jenn Wasner (vocals, guitars) from Baltimore, Maryland, (USA). Monarch is the previous name of the band before they changing their name into Wye Oak

2.The band name is a reference to the former State tree of their home state ; Maryland.

3. Wye Oak were mostly influenced by US Indie rock giants like Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Wilco. They also take reference from singer songwriter such as Neil Young and Elliot Smith.

4. Jenn and Andy Stack of Wye Oak grew up in the sububrbs outside of Baltimore.Jenn grew up in Owings Mills and Andy grew up in Catonsville.They met in high school and eventually formed a band with a few other friend

10.Based on an interview, Jenn Wasner most hated song is “Papa Roach  Scars“  But the reason she chose this one is because she felt like everyone’s heard “Thank God I’m A Country Boy”,but probably a lot of people haven’t heard this song and she feel like everyone should have to hear this song at some point in their life. 1.The band were formed in 1999 after Kele Okereke and Russel Lissack ran into each other at Reading Festival. But it was not their first meeting, because they have known each other since 1998.

2. If Bloc Party had a “historical places”. Franz Ferdinand’s concert must be one of it. Because in 2003, Kele gave a copy of debut single ‘She’s Hearing Voices‘ to British DJ Steve Lamacq. And he also handed it to Alex Kapranos. So that was pretty much how the band were discovered.

5. Liam Gallagher has been known for his cold-handed work (We are talking about his work in Oasis. Not Beady Eye) once was asked about what he thinks of Bloc Party. And he said “They’re like a bunch of University Challenge students.”. And the band responded that his insult was a truly dissapointing. Well, what did you expect from The Gallaghers.

6. In Britain, Bloc Party’s first album “Silent Alarm” was released in Valentine’s Day. But in the US, it was released a month after.

7.It’s maybe the band’s first ever show in Jakarta. But the frontman, Kele Okereke , has done a show in Jakarta before. It was a DJ Set at Blow Fish in 2010.

8.There are so many stories about the lack of “K” in Bloc Party. But here’s the real one according to Gordon Moakes, “It sort of came from when I was a student and I was fascinated by political iconography; you know, like the idea of the Stars and Stripes and the Hammer and Sickle, and how East and West are kind of denoted by different kinds of things. So we liked the idea of the Bloc, the Eastern Bloc, and from that we got the idea of a Bloc Party, kind of like a Soviet image and a classic American image combined. So that’s kind of the true story”.

9. Kele Okereke is a fan of a fashion-themed Tv Show called “Project Runway”. And what is the Tv show that he dislikes the most? Jersey Shore. Well, every cool person doesn’t like seeing a full wax haired dude and Snookie.

10.Bloc Party’s debut album, Silent Alarm, was also shaped by Adele’s 21 producer. Paul Epworth.

1. Ian Brown and John Squire’s very first time meeting was when they were in a sandbox as a children. But, they properly became a friend when they attended Altrincham Grammar School for Boys. And the things that bond them over was, The Clash and Sex Pistols.

2.Some informations said that “The Stone Roses” came as a tribute for “The Rolling Stones and some said that the name was taken from a 1959 spy thriller of that title by Sarah Gainham. But these were untrue! Ian Brown said that the band’s name came from something with a contrast, two words that went against each other. Stone – Roses

3. The Stone Roses were the pioneers of the “Madchester” music scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. And this also included bands such as The Charlatans, The Happy Mondays, and North Side

4. Do You know that “Where Angels Play” doesn’t only have one lyrics? But it also has an alternate one!

5.The Stone Roses are definitely not the first band that Brown and Squire were into. In the early 1980s, they founded the Patrol which later led them to The Stone Roses.

6.David Beckham is a huge fan of The Stone Roses, rumours said that Beckham was also one of the people who convinced the band to do a reunion.

7.What’s the most outrageous stuffs that You have ever known about The Stone Roses? Well, if there’s an award for that, We’re nominating this : “Bottled The Stone Roses’ Heaton Park show Atmosphere“

8.On the Stone Roses’ National Tv debut forBBC The Late Show (1989), when they performed “Made of Stone” all of the sudden the power failed and shut down most of the instruments. After that, Brown kept shouting “Amateurs! Amateurs!” meanwhile the presenter tried to divert the attention.

9. 150.000 tickets for The Stone Roses’ two Heaton Park shows got swept off just only in 14 minutes! Can you imagine how huge the demand of the fans in seeing them?

10.Liam Gallagher went to one of the most historical gigs of The Stone Roses, The Stone Roses at International 2 in Manchester, and it was his first gig. Apparently, this gig made him to make a band. And you know the rest? Oasis were born. Thank to The Stone Roses, Oasis’ avid fan!

Britt was a huge fan of Frank Ocean’s first record, “Nostalgia, Ultra” and Divine Fits have covered a song from Frank Ocean’s sophomore, “Lost” once during their gig.

2. Grammy Winner and founder of Bon Iver, Justin Vernon once said in an interview to Rolling Stone that Poliça (pronounced POE-LISA) are “the best band that I’ve ever heard”. So there are no excuses for you to not liking them!

3. If you press the “Alt” and “J” button together on a mac computer, Alt-J’s alias, ∆ will appear. But they don’t want you to call their band a “Triangle” or “Delta”, so, there you have it, a keyboard shortcut.

4. Erlend Øye of Kings of Convenience were one of the spectators of last year’s Singapore leg of St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival. He’s a friend of Feist, one of last year’s main act. Well, Feist used to record a song with Kings of Convenience, and seeing her as a spectator at this year’s Laneway Festival is a huge dream for everyone!

5. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala admitted that Tame Impala are a one-man band since he took most of the responsibillity for the musical composition. And fortunately, the rest of the band don’t mind about it.

6. Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan got inspired by Beyonce’s video “The Best Thing You Never Had” for BFL’s cover. And Khan added that the album’s artwork had come about because she was “bored” of the media’s representation of women

7. Japandroids name came from 2 band names, “Japanese Scream” and “Pleasure Droids”. In fact, they came from Canada, not Tokyo. And they have almost disbanded before their first album, “Post-Nothing” took a good critics from some credible music media such as Pitchfork and Spin.

8. One of Laneway alumni, Yeasayer ‘s hit single, “Ambling Alp”, is a song about a boxer, Joe Louis, who defeated a defending champion and a Nazi Boxer, Max Schmeling in 1938. “Ambling Alp” was Louis’s nickname.
