As the line-up for Laneway Festival Australia was published two days earlier (24/09), the Singapore’s installment finally reveals their line-up today. Last year, the festival had Tame Impala, Kimbra, and Divine Fits as one of the line-up. For this year, there will be :

The annual music festival will return to the 2013’s festival site, The Meadow Gardens by The Bay, and for the first time ever, this year’s Laneway are presenting not just one, but three Singapore artists; Gema, The Observatory and Vandetta. Also in this coming January will also be the first time they setting up three stages aside from the two stages you are already familiar with, a third stage will be added for us to present the entire line-up in this 12-hour festival, turning The Meadow into a festival in the truest sense of the word.

“We have always wanted to showcase local talents since we started here in 2009. This year, with the addition of a third stage, we finally had the room to actually do it. These three acts I picked personally are all truly worthy of their position in this incredible group of artists. Festival-goers are in for such a treat,” -Danny Rogers, one of the founders of Laneway Festival.

The tickets will go on sale on October 1st 2013 via SISTIC and Event Clique.

The 12-hours boutique festival is back with a bang! Even though the crazy heat has been the main distraction of the day, but the crowd seems less care about it, as the new venue, The Meadow at Gardens by the Bay, has turned into a huge field of music enthusiastic that are ready to kick off their weekend.

The Norwegian duo, Kings of Convenience was honored to start the festival at 12.40pm. Performed “My Ship Isn’t Pretty” which taken from their 2009 album “Declaration of Dependence”, and continued busting the crowd with their good twisted songs and live band playing “Misread”, “Boat Behind”, “Rule My World” and “I’d Rather Dance with You”, which somehow sounded much better when we saw it live. Poliça headed up after, and even though the set was sounded a little bit flat, but the Minnesota native, Channy Leaneagh’s presence somehow reminded us of Sinead O’Connor with her smooth sound and eclectic music. They performed songs from their album “Give You The Ghost” such as “Lay Your Cards Out” and “Amongster”.

Right after Polica, the Cleveland-based Cloud Nothings brought another heat for the crowd. Dylan Baldi’s high-pitched screaming turned out to be an annoying thing to hear for some. But they have performed some songs from their album Attack on Memory such as “Fall In”, “Stay Useless” and the 8 minutes track “Wasted Days” which then received a cold reception from the crowd. The so-called U.S indie super group, Divine Fits was performing after, Dan Boeckner and Britt Daniels controlled crowd’s needs of classic alternative stuff with their singles such as “My Love Is Real” and “Would That Not Be Nice”.

The festival ambiences grow bigger when Of Monsters And Men came onstage. Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir, Ragnar “Raggi” Þórhallsson, were able to electrified the crowd with a singalong and dancing sessions. Their hits, “Little Talks”, along with “King and Lionheart”, “Mountain Sound” and “Six Weeks” turned out to be a major sing-along sessions and become one of the most memorable set of the day.

The Canadian duo, Japandroids delivered a hell of a rock n roll set. During an interview, Brian and David stated that the only thing they expect from the crowd is a warm reception from the crowds, which what exactly they got during their performance. Starting the set with “Adrenaline Nightshift”, the crowd jumped and moshing like there’s no tomorrow. The crowd went nuts when “Wet Hair”, “Fire’s Highway” and “The House That Heaven Built” were played. They ended the set with a memorable drum crushing session and guitar-jumping movements.

After tired banging their head, the crowd couldn’t help but to enjoy the sound of tropical live electric sounds from Nicolas Jaar. With a mission to turn the green grass into a massive dancefloor, he managed to balance the needs of the partygoers to Kimbra’s die-hard fans, which are waiting patiently for her set at the other side of the stage. And off course, wasn’t a big surprise that the girls and the curiosity of the boys, went crazy when Kimbra showed up after Nicolas Jaar’s Balearic set. Her expressions, dance moves, thumping feet and not forget to mention, her attractive costume, gave the crowd energy to jump along to each of her songs, which taken mostly from her Vow album.

New Jersey’s Real Estate was armed with a warm indie tracks from their breakthrough album, “Days”, such as “Easy” and “Green Aisles”, as they tried to show their magic to the crowd. Although it felt flat for most of the time, which I think maybe because their songs were suited better to listen in a warm sunny day instead of a cold night. Unfortunate for Mercury Prize winner, Alt-J, turned out to be this year’s The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, as they have to face the sounding issue at the beginning of their set, worst, it was during their hits ‘Tessellate’. But luckily, they came back stronger and brought more of their unique gloomy music through “Matilda”, “Something Good”, “Breezeblocks” and “Dissolve Me”. Joe Newman managed to keep his voice steady all the way through their set, which was an improvement compared to their previous live set.

Yeasayer, one of the Laneway veterans has also managed to make us dancing with their improved set. During the years, Yeasayer has been known for their live set twist, as they tend to remix some of their instrument’s sounds. That’s why their old hits such as “2080”, “ONE”, and “Ambling Alp” sounded different than the original track. Some of the crowds thought their set was a little bit weird and thought they should’ve stayed with their original sounds, but some of their die-hard fans were able to appreciate the band’s effort, as they were able to lift their set to the next level.

Another Britton, Natasha Khan or known as Bat For Lashes were able to deliver a good, mesmerizing set for the night. Natasha showed us the definition of a good singer perfectly. She nailed the high-pitched notes in “Laura” perfectly. It gave us a goosebumps! The way she performed “Daniel” and “Pearl’s Dream” was just perfect.

And as the starts popping out the sky, its time for the four psychedelic Aussies with one Frenchman, Tame Impala delivered their expansion of consciousness through songs from Innerspeaker and Lonerism, which managed to turn The Meadow upside down. Started with “Solitude is Bliss”, continued with “Music to Walk Home By”, “Enders Toi”, and the unexpected jazzy breakdown at the middle of “Elephant”, which made the crowd went nuts straight after. They also lead the crowd into a massive sing-along sessions with “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” and “Half Full Glass of Wine” as their closing song.

To top it all off, Gotye showed us his live acts capacity, playing songs from “Making Mirrors” with a solid performance, especially during his hits such as “Easy Way Out”. Well off course, before he ended the show, he managed to surprise the crowd with the appearance of Kimbra while singing “Somebody That I Used To Know”. After another couple songs, he closed the festival with a style and smiled on everyone’s face, as each genre’s listeners has received what their ears want to hear that night. So, once again, congratulation to St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival for bringing South East Asia some good taste of music, and we surely can’t wait to see more of great line-ups in 2014!

Wohooo! Laneway Festival Singapore 2013 is coming at you! What? You are so clueless about what you have to prepare before going to the festival? No worries, we have created an ultimate guidelines for Laneway Festival this year. Get your reading head on to know them :

1. Get to know the Venue.
This year’s St. Jerome Laneway Festival will take place in a brand new Singapore’s landmark, Gardens By The Bay (Once again, please remember that the venue for this year will be at Garden’s By The Bay, NOT Fort Canning Park). So it’ll make your festival trip a lot more easier by peeking these promoter-provided venue maps.

http://www.facebook.com/LanewayFestSG?sk=app_270854079700379&app_data

2. Get to know the set times.
We’re pretty sure that you’ve already set to choose your preferred artists to watch. But, don’t forget to check the set-times! You don’t want to miss your favorite artists, right? For example, if you want to spend your afternoon with Kings of Convenience’s eclectic sounds, be sure to arrive at the venue before 12.40 PM.
Here is the set times.

3. Stay Hydrated and don’t forget to eat!
St. Jerome Laneway Festival is a 12-hours festival, so be sure to stay hydrated and don’t forget to eat. Because it’s going to be a long awesome experience and of course you don’t want to miss it! There are a lot of food stalls at the venue, so you won’t starve at the venue.

4. Get an extra supplement
For some people, they can’t stand over a scorching weather and the worst is they will pass out. And you definitely don’t want to miss the best performance. We know you might be phsycally exhausted, so please bring some vitamins which can make you to be more fit in enjoying the festival.

5. Dress comfortably
The Meadow at Gardens By The Bay is (literally) a huge meadow. And also Laneway is a rain or shine event. So be sure to dress comfortably, you don’t want to get annoyed by your own outfit, right?

6. Anticipating the weather
Yep, We said that it’s a rain or shine event, because of that, you might have to bring a raincoat or an umbrella. Let’s get you covered if you’re not a person who likes watching concert while getting caught by a rain.

7. The camera-pocket club
We love capturing moments in a concert, and definitely you want to capture them with the best quality of the pictures, BUT you are not allowed to bring a DSLR Camera to the venue. Don’t bother to sneak it under your clothes or lodging it in your bag, because you will still get caught. No worries, you are still allowed to bring a camera pocket.

8. Enjoy the Festival!
It doesn’t matter who you are and where do you come from. Tons of people from all over the world are coming to have a good time. So be sure to enjoy the festival and leave all your hassles behind! See you at the gig, eh? (Faisal Nugraha/Alcander Alonzo)

Japandroids is a Canadian rock duo formed in 2006, consists of Brian King (Vocals, Guitar) and David Prowse (Drums, Vocals). Although after their two EPs, All Lies and Lullaby Death Jam, by the end of 2008 the duo decided to disband, but in early 2009, the band decided to continue temporarily after signing a contract with independent Canadian label Unfamiliar Records to release their first full-length album, Post-Nothing. This album gained fame and good reviews from music’s most reliable media such as Spin and Pitchfork. In 2012, Japandroids released their sophomore album, Celebration Rock and gained wide praise. The album made it to Rolling Stone’s list of 50 best albums of 2012 and stamped “Best New Music” from Pitchfork.

Prior to their scheduled set at St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival on January 26th, 2013, we’ve talked to Dave Prowse about visiting new places, their love of touring, and their success in 2012.

Hello Dave, so, how are you?
Hi! Yeah, everything’s fine.

Straight to our first question of the day, Japandroids has been known for their love of touring, so what’s it about touring that you love?
Pretty much everything about it, you know. Well obviously getting to travel to many different places, but also to be honest, playing music in front of an audience who know your songs, and sing along, and have that kind of moment of connection with a huge group of people, That’s the best feeling that I’ve ever had in my life. I don’t really think you could beat that.

Celebration Rock has gained wide praise from Spin, Pitchfork, even Rolling Stone, did you expect those kind of reactions while making this album?
Um, no I don’t think you can make an album while expecting those kinds of reactions. You just hope that you could make an album you’ll be proud of. To be honest, the accolades and reviews for this record haven’t given us much surprise compared to Post-Nothing. At that time we’d never thought anyone would like it, but then a lot of people heard it and a lot of people liked it. So, yeah this time around it was a little bit strange, but yes, it was strange. Obviously it was very flattering to get all those critical acclaim.

What’s the difference between Post-Nothing and Celebration Rock from the process of the making?
Yeah, we’ve become a very different band by the time we made Celebration Rock. When we made Post-Nothing we were still a local band in Vancouver. So we made Post-Nothing in a very short time, because at that time we didn’t have a lot of money. So that’s the reason why we made this album very quick. When we made Celebration Rock, we just wanted to rebuild the vibe (of the making of the first album). So we decided to work again with Jesse (Gander, the producer of their first album) because he’s a fantastic engineer. During the making of this album, we’ve got a lot more of time, a lot more of money, and also an expectations of our fans, because at the time we made Post-Nothing, we’re just making a record for ourselves. So, yeah, Celebration Rock is a lot more stressful, that’s why it took so long.

Japandroids’songs contains a lot of strong rock n roll lyrics such as “Fire”, “Highway”, and “Adrenaline”. Could you tell us more about your lyrics?
First of all, I didn’t write the lyrics, it was all Brian. But I’m pretty sure he made the lyrics to be easy so all people could interpret it. Figuring the meaning of the song by their will, I’m pretty sure that’s the way we operate.

So, Brian wrote most of the songs, right? Why did you choose to cover (The Gun Club’s) “For The Love of Ivy”?
The Gun Club is a band that we’re really loved and we’re really respect. And “For the Love of Ivy” is a great song that we’re not really capable of writing on our own. It has a different kind of energy and wilderness that we’ve never been able to capture, and also it’s still fit to put it with the other songs in the album.

Have you ever thought about having another member in the band?
Well, you know you’re limited, knowing that you have only 2 people in this band. But I’m pretty sure there are a lot of bands that consists of 2 members and they made a really good music. So that’s why we never thought about an idea of having another member in the band, even though we once thought of having a vocalist because Brian and I loves the way we play guitar & drums, the way it blended, but we’re really struggled to blend it with a perfect vocal.

Lets talk about St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, it’s your first festival in 2013, and Singapore will be the first city in South East Asia that you’ll be going to. What can we expect from the show?
Hopefully it’ll just be a really sweaty fun energetic show, just like all other show. Playing our music as loudly as possible, hopefully having a really good time and hopefully the crowd responded to that and having a really good time with us too. Well, we’ve never been to that part of the world and we’re really looking forward to play in a new place, new country with these new people to enjoy the music with us.

Now, it’s our last question. Even though St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival was being held in Singapore, there are a lot of Indonesians wanting to fly overseas to attend the festival. So, is there any message to Indonesian fans?
Yeah, we wish we could make it to Indonesia sometimes soon, To be honest I didn’t know that people noticed our band in Indonesia, but we’re really love to play in a brand new place, with a brand new people as much as we could. So, yeah, if you guys in Indonesia want us to play with you guys, please let us know, we’re trying to make it possible.

For your information, Japandroids’svinyl were being sold at one of Indonesia’s independent record store.
Oh yeah? Really? Awesome. What’s the name of the record store?

It was Monka Magic.
Wow, cool, I never thought of it.

So Dave, that’s it for today, thanks for the interview, we’re really looking forward to rock on with you at St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival.
Oh yeah, see you soon, and we’re really looking forward to play with you guys.

1. Britt Daniels of Divine Fits is a huge fan of Frank Ocean.
Britt was a huge fan of Frank Ocean’s first record, “Nostalgia, Ultra” and Divine Fits have covered a song from Frank Ocean’s sophomore, “Lost” once during their gig.

2. Grammy Winner and founder of Bon Iver, Justin Vernon once said in an interview to Rolling Stone that Poliça (pronounced POE-LISA) are “the best band that I’ve ever heard”. So there are no excuses for you to not liking them!

3. If you press the “Alt” and “J” button together on a mac computer, Alt-J’s alias, ∆ will appear. But they don’t want you to call their band a “Triangle” or “Delta”, so, there you have it, a keyboard shortcut.

4. Erlend Øye of Kings of Convenience were one of the spectators of last year’s Singapore leg of St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival.

5. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala admitted that Tame Impala are a one-man band since he took most of the responsibillity for the musical composition. And fortunately, the rest of the band don’t mind about it.

6. Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan got inspired by Beyonce’s video “The Best Thing You Never Had” for BFL’s cover. And Khan added that the album’s artwork had come about because she was “bored” of the media’s representation of women

7. Japandroids name came from 2 band names, “Japanese Scream” and “Pleasure Droids”. In fact, they came from Canada, not Tokyo. And they have almost disbanded before their first album, “Post-Nothing” took a good critics from some credible music media such as Pitchfork and Spin.

8. One of Laneway alumni, Yeasayer ‘s hit single, “Ambling Alp”, is a song about a boxer, Joe Louis, who defeated a defending champion and a Nazi Boxer, Max Schmeling in 1938. “Ambling Alp” was Louis’s nickname.

9. Of Monsters and Men are an Icelandic band. What’s the first thing that cross your mind when you hear the word “Iceland”? Ours was Sigur Ros, and guess what, Of Monsters and Men, the winner of Iceland’s battle of the bands, used to have a session in Sigur Ros’s studio!

10.
With two side-by-side stages and 14 acts St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival in Singapore this year probably was one of the biggest festival, which been waited by 7800 Indie music lovers around Asia.

The festival itself started around 2pm in the middle of the day, and lots of nice good looking hispters already gather to see Cults, duo from NYC with their first song Abducted followed by You Know What I Mean, Slow Song and after 40 minuets perform they closed it with their hits Oh My God which taken from their self titled album.

Band which famous with Shook Down song, Yuck came out as the second band and with their noise and shoegazing sound, the band start to play their hits like Holing out, The Wall, Georgia, Suicide Policeman, Milkshake and closed with Rubber.

The crowd also can enjoy their late lunch inside the venue companied with sounds from Austra with their unique girl-band appearance. Followed by Girls, the crowd was led by Christopher Owens and his guitar to paid tribute to Whitney Houston by sang I Will Always Love You before playing the band’s set.

Another band that have gain lots of Asian fans since their tour last year was The Drums. The band played songs all dancing shoes lover wants to hear such as Best Friend, Let’s Go Surfing, What You Were, Money, The Future, Me and The Moon and Forever and Ever Amen.

As the sun goes down, the hype on the fest gets up. Continued with Twin Shadow, Anna Calvi and Laura Marling, the crowd can cater around and enjoyed the late sunset with their friends and loves one. And then the emotion gets rock again when The Pains Of Being Pure at Heart went to the stage and played their nu gaze indie pop songs like , I Wanna Go All The Way, Belong, Young Adult Friction, A Teenager In Love, and Heart In Your Heartbreak. Wasn’t enough with rock sound, Toro Y Moi come up and made the crowd dance to their New Beat, All Alone, Talamak, Still Sounds, Freaking Out and even Low Shoulder.

Feist, The Horros and M83 probably was the most waited band of the night, and with songs and live act that holding breath the bands succeed to made the crowd jumping around, nodding their heads and even dancing like no tomorrow. And to top it all of Anthony Gonzalez and his live band closed the festival with epic performance from the stage atmosphere, lightning, to their act itself succeed made every penny paid off. Surely after this festival as Danny Rogers of Laneway said, we couldn’t wait to see more of ‘right music’ come to asia next year!
