MARKETSHARE : Bringing Art to the Market and the Masses

The project “Market Share” branches into the field of art in public spaces in Jakarta and is a collaboration between the Frankfurter Städelschule and ruangrupa. Curated by Tobias Rehberger and Ade Darmawan, “Market Share” will officially open on Tuesday, November 10, at 10 a.m. at Pasar Tebet Timur.

The project “Market Share” branches into the field of art in public spaces in Jakarta and is a collaboration between the Frankfurter Städelschule and ruangrupa. Curated by Tobias Rehberger and Ade Darmawan, “Market Share” will officially open on Tuesday, November 10, at 10 a.m. at Pasar Tebet Timur.Tobias Rehberger is widely regarded as one of the most influential German artists of his generation. The recipient of the Golden Lion at the 53rd Venezia Biennale, he constantly crosses borders between art, design, and architecture. Ade Darmawan is an Indonesian artist, curator as well as one of the founders and heads of ruangrupa, an art collective that, among others, puts an emphasis on working in urban spaces.

Together, they have explored the possibilities of public spaces as well as urban realities of Jakarta and have encouraged 10 selected artists from Germany and Indonesia to approach the realities of one market place in Tebet, Jakarta. The resulting works by the young artists were created over the course of a few months –some of them in collaboration with local market vendors. In their artworks, the artists circle around the specifics of a market, about goods, the ritual of buying and selling, giving and taking, transportation, security, survival or about unnoticed spaces. The artworks will be displayed for an unlimited time, more and more merging with their surrounding or slowly disappearing.

The participating artists in this project are Angga Cipta, Bertrand Flanet, Edi Danartono, Hanna-Maria Hammari, Julia Zabowska in collaboration with Carlos Franke, Liesel Burisch, Maharani Mancanagara, Muhammad Fatchurofi, The Popo, and Putri Ayu Lestari. The project “Market Share” is part of the German Season, an Indonesian-German festival that celebrates the friendship between the two countries. The German Season is an initiative of the Federal Foreign Office in Germany and organized by the Goethe-Institut Indonesien, the German Embassy Jakarta and EKONID.
