The Cardigans Brought Back 90’s Memories

The Cardigans were kickass!”, That’s the first line came from us after we finished watching their show in Jakarta. On August 14th 2012, The Cardigans had their reunion concert in Jakarta. Taking place in Tennis Indoor Senayan, people have crowded the venue since 8.00 PM, eventhough the concert will start at 09.00 PM. Before getting in the concert, we heard through the grapevine that The Cardigans would perform in a very long set, which was such an exciting news (especially to their avid fans), and also they would perform some of the classic hooks. Eventhough the concert was held in Ramadhan month, it didn’t reduce the enthusiasm from the public to catch this concert.

The Cardigans started showing up their appearance at 09.30 PM, and kicked off the show by performing Paralyzed, which is taken from their fourth album, Gran Turismo. And then followed by Erase/Wind. As what we saw, the festival class wasn’t so crowded. It was only half-filled and Ninna Persson even asked “What happens with the big empty over there?”, which really surprised us, because the first session of Festival class’ ticket selling was sold out.

Nina Persson herself, was so flawless, wore a some-kind unique head piece as her accessories and also her voice was very amazing. It was nice to see band that we saw/knew in a very long time ago and they still sound as good as when the first time we heard them.

The first ten songs that they performed are taken from their album which was launched in 1998, and also their reunion tour is titled “Gran Turismo Tour”. Then the next set was taken from their “Best Of” songs. When Nina Persson said “we got music from the twenty first, twentieth, and also…… ninetinth”, the crowded started dancing crazily as the intro of their catchiest tune boomed from the speaker, It’s Lovefool!. We can easily heard the crowd were really into this song which made a really sweet choir of this song. Lovefool which also featured in 1996’s movie : William’s Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet. After a happy pop-song, they performed Hold Me and thenLive and Learn. As the fifteenth song, The Cardigans soothed the crowd with You’re The Storm, one of their hits in album Long Gone Before Daylight (and also featured in their “Best Of” album). After getting shooted with You’re The Storm, the crowds were blasted with I Need Some Fine Wine And You, You Need To Be Nicer.

In the encore set, we were happily surprised that The Cardigans performed Rise&Shine! This is their very first song in their first album titled Emmerdale. The another interesting fact is, they hadn’t performed this meanest song since 2006, so it would make it as their first time to perform this song after six years! The crowds busted a move along this classic song and definitely did a karaoke session. As they have finished this song, the crowds in the tribune class gave a standing applause to them for performing Rise&Shine. And They ended the night by performing Communication.

It was one of the peakest evenings that we have ever had in 2012, saw The Cardigans performing Rise&Shine is a definite pleasure, especially if you were raised in the 90s music era, that performance could bring you a tear of joy. We heard some people were bit disappointed to see The Cardigans not performing Carnival, but as an exchange, they performed something that could ease your yearning with 90s music. And that night had highlighted many of the 90s kids’ life. (AA)
