The Next Big Thing (No.18) : Goat
Be ready for this week’s satanic and hypnotic music that we are giving to you. Goat are in charge for this one. Goat are a masked Swedish afrobeat band who will haunt you with their experimental music. As their profile story says “Legend has it that for centuries, the inhabitants of the village of Korpolombolo were dedicated to the worship and practices of Voodoo. This strange and seemingly unlikely activity was apparently introduced into the area after a travelling witch doctor and a handful of her disciples were led to Korpolombolo by following a cipher hidden within their most sacred of ancient scriptures.”, has pretty much caught our ears and curiosity to dig more about their music, and once we listened to their tracks, we got mesmerized, hypnotized, and felt like being taken to the whole new dimension of music. Goat consist of Christian Johansson and another two mysterious ‘core’ members. Before naming themselves as Goat, the band have been playing music ever since they were children. Grew up with a traditional music of Korpilombolo, the band started to explore the music, “The elders were playing very rhythmic music with lots of drums and they would sing in an olden type of Swedish. It is also influenced, as we are, by many other types of music. For example, in the 70s, they were influenced by Swedish progressive rock.” Said Chris Johansson.
The band released their debut album under Rocket Recordings in August 2012. Their debut, World Music, has gained many appreciations from Guardian, NME, and Rolling Stone. World Music contains of nine songs which will give you the sensation as tittle of the album. The band actually wrote a single ‘Goatman’ and then the label liked the song and asked them to work on some more tracks. If you praise the band’s materials and the vibe of their music, it’s because Goat recorded some of the songs at the temple in Korpilombolo.
We are sure that people won’t be able to point out what kind of music that Goatt are creating, they have afrobeat, funk, psychedelic, psych-rock and those experimental tunes. For their live show, Goat always use the ritual robes and tribal masks, because they think music sounds better without the connection to the individuals and they are connected to the music. There are also some connections between Goat and the culture where they grew up with. When Chris was asked about the genre that people have been labelling to their music, he responded “I think we play World Music”
