The Next Big Thing (No.28) : Daughter

Fancy of soulful music and beautifully depressed lyrics? This one should get your attention right away. They are Daughter. Daughter are an indie folk band from England who are formed by Elena Tonra (vocals), Igor Haefeli (guitar) and Remi Aguilella (drums). The English lads went to the same music school in London and started releasing an EP, ‘His Young Heart’ in 2010 and followed by their second EP, ‘The Wild Youth’, in the same year. Eventhough the trio hadn’t released any studio album in 2011 and 2012, their name was famously known as BBC Radio 1 invited them in to perform a Maida Vale session for Huw Stephens’ show. And after that, they began touring here and there all over the country, filled some slot at some festivals, and it led them to have a sign with 4AD to work on their debut album, ‘If You Leave’.

Daughter’s music is seriously taking you to some-kind of dark side where you’ll find it nice to just sit alone in the corner and deeply think about everything. Not only bringing in “sad” music in it, but you also have to praise their writing skills. The lyrics which are deeply personal and they will easily break your tears. The extra credits over the powerful lyrics and music should be given to Elena. Her singing just clicks with the music and takes the whole wheel of Daughter’s strength point. You’ll find her vocals a bit like Enya, Feist, or Sinead O’ Connor.

Their debut album which was released on March 18th 2013 through 4AD is actually a pending business that they have to deal after having a packed schedule of tour gigs in 2012. “There’s always things you have to learn, I don’t know if I’d repeat the process though haha. We had a lot of tour gigs in 2012, which was incredible, but it meant we had to juggle touring and coming back to the studio. It was a bit all over the place; jigsaw-like in the end. We’re really proud of it, it’s our first album, it wouldn’t be out if we weren’t.” said Elena on Daughter’s debut album to scenewave.com. Not so long after its launching date, the band got positive feedbacks from BBC. And the great is, most of the songs are written by them in an emotional conditions that are truthfully poured in their music.

It’s clear that Daughter’s music is full with personal lyrics, dramatic music, and you may say it as a graving song. But, Daughter are not giving those typical sad lyrics which is the tendency of some musicians. Daughter’s music is expensive, serene, and mild. If you are not a fan of a ballad or sad songs, Daughter’s should be your exception. They will haunt you with the deep poetry lyrics and will dim your life’s light for a moment.
